You can run a prerecorded study-video stream on YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by looping a media file with FFmpeg and sending the feed to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. You need a channel eligible for live streaming, media you have the rights to use, an encoder configuration matched to your chosen resolution and frame rate, and a VPS with enough CPU and outbound transfer. Looping a file does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the host, network, encoder process, or YouTube connection can still fail.
Before you start: check channel access and media rights
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says channels need to be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Age requirements also apply. Check the current requirements for your account before planning a launch; YouTube can change its rules and limits.
Use media you can stream
Use video, music, images, and animations that you created or have permission to stream on YouTube. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: for licensed material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. A “royalty-free” label or a purchased track is not, by itself, proof that YouTube enforcement will be bypassed. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the current live-control workflow. Choose the privacy setting you need for testing; use the preview and private or unlisted options available to your account.
- Open the stream’s encoder settings in Studio. Copy the ingestion URL and stream key shown there, along with the selected stream configuration. The exact endpoint and UI labels can change, so use the values Studio provides rather than a URL copied from an old guide.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Store it in a protected environment variable or restricted configuration file, not in a public script, repository, or support post. Regenerate it in Studio if it is exposed.
You can manage broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API, but API integration is optional; a manually configured encoder workflow does not require it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a VPS for the actual workload
There is no universal VPS size for this job. The right plan depends on whether FFmpeg can copy the source streams or must transcode them, the target resolution and frame rate, the file’s storage needs, and the provider’s current transfer and billing terms. Compare plans on these points:
- Outbound transfer: Estimate monthly data from your configured video and audio bitrate, the hours you plan to stream, and a margin for protocol overhead. At a constant bitrate, transfer grows with running time. Check the provider’s sustained transfer allowance and egress charges.
- CPU: Transcoding takes more CPU than copying compatible streams. Do not assume a plan can encode your chosen resolution without testing the intended file and settings.
- Network and region: Consider network consistency and the VPS location relative to your viewers, your administration location, and YouTube’s available ingestion endpoint.
- Storage and operations: Allow room for the media file, logs, and any working files. Check restart controls, monitoring options, and support terms for the plan.
- Total current cost: Include recurring server charges and any transfer or storage fees. VPS prices and terms vary by provider and can change.
Install FFmpeg and verify the source file
Install FFmpeg using the package manager or installation method supported by your Linux distribution, then check the installed version and its local help before relying on flags from an online example. The FFmpeg documentation is regenerated for newer revisions, so options may differ from the version on your VPS.

Inspect the media file before streaming. Confirm its video and audio streams, codec, resolution, frame rate, and duration, and make sure the file plays through its end. The appropriate stream mapping and choice between re-encoding and stream-copying depend on those properties and on the target settings shown by YouTube.
Loop the file and send it to YouTube
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop input option accepts -1 for infinite looping. Put the option before the input it applies to. A simplified command shape is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/study-video.mp4 [input and output options] -f flv "[YouTube ingestion URL]/[stream key]"
This illustrates the input-loop placement, not a production-ready command. The correct mapping, output codec settings, audio handling at file boundaries, timestamps, and reconnect behavior depend on your file, FFmpeg build, YouTube Studio settings, and deployment. Do not paste the bracketed placeholders literally. Build the output options from the live encoder settings in Studio and verify the result with a test broadcast before using it publicly.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies an RTMPS URL, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, and port 443. Follow the endpoint and key supplied in Studio, and make sure the VPS firewall and provider network permit the required outbound connection.

Match the encoder settings to your target
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the resolution and frame rate you select. The recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. The guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codec families and AAC or MP3 audio. Supported choices and recommended bitrates depend on the target mode; do not apply one bitrate to every resolution and frame rate.
- Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the values you intend to send and check that the source supports them appropriately.
- Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval for the selected mode, consulting YouTube’s live table when configuring the encoder.
- Choose a listed video and audio codec combination supported by your FFmpeg build and suitable for the source.
- Check that the selected output settings match the broadcast’s settings in YouTube Studio and that the preview receives video and audio.
Test before you make the stream public
- Start with a private or unlisted test using the intended file and configuration.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s preview and status indicators to confirm it is receiving the feed without encoder or policy warnings.
- Check audio/video synchronization and listen across the point where the file loops. Repeated files can expose boundary problems even when the first pass looks correct.
- Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, and bitrate in the encoder output and Studio status.
- Only make the stream public after you have checked the media rights and the test behaves as expected.
This is a practical validation workflow, not a claim that a particular command or VPS has been tested.

Keep the process running—and plan for failures
-stream_loop -1 repeats input; it does not monitor the host or promise a continuous broadcast. A VPS can reboot, lose network access, run out of resources, or stop the FFmpeg process. YouTube can also drop an incoming stream. Decide how you will monitor the process and detect a stalled feed, and test any restart or recovery mechanism on your chosen host. There is no single VPS size, monitoring setup, or uptime guarantee established for every deployment.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube receives no data: Check that the process is running, the key and endpoint are exactly those shown in Studio, the output URL uses RTMPS as configured, and outbound access to port 443 is permitted.
- Studio reports encoder or stream-configuration warnings: Compare the actual output codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s current table for your selected target.
- The stream ends or stalls: Check the FFmpeg process, VPS resource and network status, provider transfer limits, and logs. A loop flag cannot recover a failed host or connection by itself.
- Audio or video changes at the loop point: Inspect the file and test the transition. Stream mapping, timestamps, and audio behavior at file boundaries are source- and command-dependent.
- YouTube interrupts the stream for a rights issue: Review Studio’s notice and the rights for every component of the media. If a rights owner licensed the material, ask whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
Or let it run in the cloud
