You can run a continuous study-music broadcast by looping cleared audio and visuals through FFmpeg on a VPS, then sending the encoded output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS keeps the encoder running independently of your home computer, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the process, VPS network, YouTube ingest, broadcast setup, and media can all fail. This guide covers the setup, settings, supervision, and recovery points that matter.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with access to create a live broadcast, plus its Live Control Room stream URL and stream key.
- A VPS whose CPU can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, and whose sustained outbound bandwidth can carry the stream reliably. No universal minimum VPS plan is established; test the specific server and configuration.
- Audio and visuals that you have the rights to use in a livestream. Check whether the permission also covers an archived recording and monetization. Owning a file, purchasing a track, or giving attribution does not by itself establish those rights.
- An installed FFmpeg build. Check its local documentation and supported encoders, since available options and command syntax depend on the build and version.
FFmpeg and a VPS are a software-and-hosting workflow; the official YouTube workflow does not require dedicated capture hardware.
Clear the music and prepare the program
Verify track permissions
Before uploading or broadcasting music, confirm that its license explicitly permits livestream use on YouTube and covers any replay or archive you plan to retain. Check monetization terms separately. No particular music catalog or license is established here, so do not assume that a track described as “study music” is cleared.
Prepare and test files
Organize the audio and any visual loop, then verify that every file decodes and plays through the full intended sequence. Test the loop for gaps, abrupt transitions, drift between audio and video, or files that cause FFmpeg to exit early. Use representative content during the test: YouTube specifically advises testing before going live with similar audio and movement to the planned broadcast.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast according to how you want the public event to appear.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that setup. Use the account’s current values; do not hardcode an ingest address copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the primary RTMP ingestion address from the RTMPS address, and exposes backup addresses too.
- Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit using TLS/SSL. Its troubleshooting guidance says both the protocol and server should be set to
rtmps; if an SSL error persists and the URL setup calls for it, port 443 may be specified. - Store the key in a secret or environment variable available only to the FFmpeg process. Do not put a live key in a public command, screenshot, log, repository, or support post. If a key is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room before restarting.
Depending on the encoder, enter the URL and key separately or combine the ingest URL and stream name as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the values and format provided by your own Live Control Room or API response.
Choose compatible FFmpeg output settings
Set resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrates, and keyframe interval together. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check its current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated resolution or example. The right target must also fit the VPS’s sustained CPU and upload capacity.

| Setting | Guidance | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMP/RTMPS are the documented ingest family; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS may be relevant for HDR or capabilities not supported over RTMP(S). | Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build and chosen YouTube ingest method support the combination you intend to use. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 are listed in current encoder guidance. | Use a codec compatible with the selected ingest method and encoder; do not assume every combination is supported. |
| Rate control | Use CBR as YouTube recommends. | Choose a target within YouTube’s current range for the selected resolution and frame rate, and below what the VPS can sustain. |
| Keyframes | Two seconds recommended; four seconds maximum. | Calculate the GOP length from the chosen frame rate. For example, at 30 fps a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames; at 60 fps it corresponds to 120 frames. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 are listed. Guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1; stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps and 5.1 is 384 kbps. | Match the audio channel layout and sample rate to the actual program and encoder settings. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. | For a largely static study visual, choose only the frame rate the content needs and the VPS can encode continuously. |
The guidance figures above are from YouTube Help’s current encoder page, which does not state a publication year; the page was accessed 2026-10-03. Check the live documentation and your account’s ingest settings before deployment because platform and encoder details can change.
Run FFmpeg continuously without assuming one command fits all
The exact command depends on your media, FFmpeg build, codec, chosen resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and whether the audio and video inputs have matching durations. The official FFmpeg documentation is the reference for your installed build’s loop and output syntax: FFmpeg documentation. No VPS-specific end-to-end command has been verified here, so test a command built for your actual inputs rather than pasting an untested generic one.

- Configure the input loop intentionally using the options supported by your FFmpeg build. Verify that the complete audio and visual sequence repeats and that looping does not produce a gap, drift, or early exit.
- Set the encoder to real-time operation and configure the selected codecs, CBR targets, frame rate, resolution, and GOP interval. Confirm the output is compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest protocol.
- Direct the output to the RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room, keeping the key out of the visible command and logs. If your encoder takes stream URL and stream name as separate fields, use those fields rather than guessing how to concatenate them.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast before the intended continuous event. Observe the actual received stream in Live Control Room while representative audio and visuals are playing.
For YouTube’s current setup details, see YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance and its encoder settings and stream health guidance.
Supervise the encoder and the broadcast separately
Keep the process alive
Use a service manager or equivalent process supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process failure. Configure logs so you can diagnose errors without revealing the stream key. A running service only confirms that a local process is active; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that viewers see the intended broadcast.

Monitor YouTube’s received stream
Watch Live Control Room’s stream health indicators and messages during testing and operation. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring health; the server’s process status cannot replace this check. Also monitor VPS CPU use, outbound capacity, and the FFmpeg log for encoder, input, or connection errors.
Plan the broadcast lifecycle
An encoder connection and a public YouTube event are separate concerns. YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the encoder-facing liveStream configuration from liveBroadcast events and describes reuse of stream settings across recurring broadcasts. Confirm how your channel’s 24/7 broadcast is configured; an encoder reconnect does not necessarily create or resume the intended public video. See the YouTube Live API broadcast lifecycle documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming signal | Wrong URL, protocol, stream name, or key. | Compare the encoder settings with the current Live Control Room values. Confirm RTMPS is selected when intended and that the correct key is in use. |
| TLS or SSL error | Protocol/server mismatch or an ingest connection configuration issue. | Verify that both protocol and server are RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s port 443 guidance if the SSL error persists and the URL setup calls for it. |
| Stream drops, buffers, or reports instability | The VPS cannot sustain the selected bitrate, CPU load, or network path is unstable. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or target bitrate as appropriate; use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, run another representative test, and inspect Live Control Room health messages. |
| FFmpeg is running but viewers see a problem | The local process is alive, but YouTube may not be receiving healthy output, or the media itself may be faulty. | Check Live Control Room feedback, FFmpeg logs, and the input files. Validate audio/video sync and the loop with a representative test. |
| Encoder reconnects, but the public broadcast is wrong or absent | Stream configuration and broadcast event lifecycle are being treated as one thing. | Review the separate YouTube stream and broadcast settings, then confirm the intended event is configured for the continuous feed. |
| FFmpeg exits after the playlist ends | Input looping or playlist behavior was not configured as intended for the installed build. | Check the build’s FFmpeg documentation and test the entire loop duration before relying on process supervision. |
Costs and operational trade-offs
A VPS is not a fixed-cost answer without a provider and plan: compare sustained CPU, outbound traffic limits, network reliability and region, support, and total price. The required capacity depends on the output settings and workload; a universal minimum plan is not established. Account for the time needed to test, monitor, update the process, and respond to failures. RTMPS adds encrypted delivery, while HLS may suit HDR or features unavailable over RTMP(S), but verify compatibility and configuration complexity for your encoder and use case.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep the YouTube channel live without maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing needs to stay powered on at home. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera.
