You can keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running from an EC2 Linux instance by having FFmpeg publish to YouTube Live in the foreground and letting systemd restart FFmpeg if the process exits unexpectedly. The basic path is: enable YouTube Live, prepare a compatible media source, configure FFmpeg and a protected stream key, then create and monitor a systemd service. This can recover from some process failures; one EC2 instance is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
What this setup does—and what it cannot guarantee
The setup sends a local media file or generated source from an EC2 Linux host to YouTube’s ingest service:
EC2 Linux host → media source → FFmpeg → YouTube RTMPS ingest URL and stream key
systemd supervises FFmpeg as a foreground process. If FFmpeg exits with a failure while the host and systemd remain available, a configured restart policy can start it again. That does not fix an unreadable source, invalid credentials, blocked network access, an unhealthy process that never exits, or an EC2 host or regional outage. Plan for monitoring and, if availability requirements justify it, separately designed and tested failover.

Prepare YouTube Live and the source
Enable the channel and create a stream
- Confirm that the channel is eligible and enabled for YouTube Live. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and locate its ingest URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL when supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS; it is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Check the actual URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a default endpoint is encrypted.
- Treat the stream key as a password for publishing. Do not put a real key in a public script, a shared unit file, shell history, or logs. If an authorized channel owner or manager believes a key was exposed, YouTube allows that person to reset it.
Check the media before choosing copy or transcode
FFmpeg can copy compatible audio and video streams without decoding and re-encoding them, or it can transcode to change codecs, dimensions, filters, or bitrate. Copying avoids encoding work and quality loss from another encode, but is suitable only when the source’s codecs and properties work for the intended YouTube ingest profile. Transcoding provides control over the output profile but needs CPU capacity and may reduce quality. FFmpeg’s documentation explains the distinction; the right choice depends on the actual file, not just its filename or resolution.
Before deploying, inspect the input with your installed FFmpeg tools and confirm that the build supports the required input, codecs, and RTMPS output protocol. Builds vary. The example below is a starting pattern, not a tested command or guarantee of compatibility; adapt and test it with your file and installed FFmpeg version.
Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a number from a different profile. YouTube recommends a speed test, a preflight test, and monitoring stream health.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 figures, not universal minimums or a promise that a particular EC2 instance can encode them. YouTube’s bitrate table distinguishes minimum and recommended values and varies by codec; use the row and column that match your actual stream. Replace the URL and key with the values for the selected YouTube stream. -re reads a file at its native playback rate; -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely; and -c copy requests stream copy. The RTMP-family output commonly uses the FLV muxer. This illustrative command may need changes for the media and installed build. Do not use stream copy if the source is incompatible with the intended ingest profile.
If transcoding is required, choose explicit video and audio codecs, bitrate controls, dimensions, frame rate, and keyframe interval for the target profile. For H.264, the option pattern commonly includes a video encoder such as libx264, a suitable CBR-oriented rate-control configuration, and a two-second GOP/keyframe interval matched to the output frame rate; audio is commonly encoded as AAC. Encoder availability and option behavior vary by FFmpeg build, so verify the installed encoders and test the resulting stream rather than treating a generic command as production-validated.

Keep credentials out of the public unit
Do not paste a real stream key into the example command or a world-readable systemd unit. A practical deployment should store the credential in a file or systemd credential mechanism supported by the chosen Linux distribution and systemd version, restrict access to the service account and administrators, and ensure backups and logs do not expose it. A wrapper can read a protected credential and invoke FFmpeg, but if the key is assembled into the output URL, it may still be visible in process arguments to sufficiently privileged users. Restrict host access accordingly and check the exact behavior of the chosen credential mechanism.

Create a systemd service that restarts FFmpeg
Run FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process; do not detach it into an unmanaged background shell. A schematic unit follows. Adapt paths, account names, network ordering, credential handling, and unit conventions to the installed Linux distribution. The example assumes a protected wrapper at /usr/local/sbin/youtube-loop that starts FFmpeg in the foreground and exits when FFmpeg exits.

WantedBy=multi-user.target
Type=exec lets systemd track whether execution setup succeeds and is recommended for long-running services in the systemd service manual. Restart=on-failure covers abnormal process exits; RestartSec=10 is an example delay, not a universally correct value. Choose a delay appropriate to your workload and avoid a rapid restart loop. The service account should have only the permissions and file access it needs.
Install and operate the unit
- Save the unit under the systemd service directory used by your distribution, commonly
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-loop.service. Ensure the wrapper and media file exist, are readable by the service account, and do not contain publicly exposed credentials. - Ask systemd to reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-loop.service. - Check whether the service is running:
sudo systemctl status youtube-loop.service. - Inspect recent service output and errors:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-loop.service -n 100 --no-pager. Follow logs during a controlled test withsudo journalctl -u youtube-loop.service -f.
Confirm command names, paths, and service conventions for your distribution. A service shown as active only means systemd sees its process as running; it does not prove YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allow outbound access without exposing an ingest port
In the usual one-way setup, FFmpeg initiates an outbound connection to YouTube. You do not need to expose an inbound RTMP port on the EC2 host for YouTube to receive that stream. Use the minimum inbound rules: restrict SSH to the administrator’s IP range or use a managed access method instead. Check the instance’s outbound rules, subnet routing, DNS, and any network ACL or host firewall policy for the selected deployment. AWS documents security groups as stateful, so response traffic for an allowed outbound connection is permitted.
Test the stream, restart, and archive behavior
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream. Inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators, and check both audio and video.
- Verify the stream key, ingest URL, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and outbound network path if YouTube does not receive a healthy stream.
- Test process recovery deliberately: stop FFmpeg in a controlled test, confirm systemd restarts it, then confirm the YouTube stream recovers. This tests process supervision, not host failover or every network failure.
- Monitor both the systemd service and YouTube stream health. A process that remains alive can still be stalled or publishing unusable media.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive behavior for a stream exceeding 12 hours. If a permanent recording matters, design and validate a separate recording or segmentation approach and check YouTube’s current limits.

| Failure | What to check or plan |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits unexpectedly | Restart=on-failure can restart the process while systemd and the host are functioning; inspect service status and journal output to find the exit cause. |
| Source file is missing, unreadable, or invalid | Check the path, file integrity, permissions, and service account access. Restarting the same command will not repair the source. |
| Stream key was reset or is invalid | Check the selected stream’s credentials in Live Control Room and update the protected credential source; do not print the key into logs while debugging. |
| Outbound traffic, DNS, or routing is blocked | Check security group egress, subnet routing, DNS, network ACLs, and host firewall rules. |
| CPU is insufficient for the chosen encode | Check host load and encoder behavior. Consider stream copy if compatible, a less demanding output profile, or a suitably sized instance. |
| FFmpeg is alive but the stream is stalled or unhealthy | Systemd may not restart a process that has not exited. Use independent monitoring and alerting, and verify YouTube’s stream-health view. |
| EC2 host or region fails | A restart policy on one host cannot restore service on a failed host or region. Higher availability requires a separately designed and tested failover plan. |
| YouTube account or stream is restricted | Review the channel and Live Control Room status; restarting FFmpeg cannot clear account restrictions. |
Estimate EC2 cost from your actual configuration
A continuous EC2 workload incurs compute charges while the instance is running and may also incur outbound data-transfer charges. The total depends on region, instance family and size, operating system, storage, and expected stream bitrate and transfer. AWS pricing and any published transfer allowance have eligibility and geographic exclusions and can change; use AWS’s current pricing page or calculator with those inputs. There is no defensible universal monthly price for a 24/7 stream without those assumptions.
