You can run recorded church services continuously on YouTube Live from an Amazon Lightsail VPS by preparing an eligible YouTube channel, installing and testing an encoder on a Linux instance, and keeping that encoder supervised. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; your VPS sends the video to that destination. The key work is more than starting a process: choose settings for the source footage, budget for continuous outbound data, protect access, monitor failures, and confirm broadcast rights for every service.
Decide how the continuous stream should work
A Lightsail VPS replaces the church computer and its local internet connection as the encoder host, but it does not remove the need to manage an encoder, server resources, network transfer, and YouTube monitoring. A continuous stream is also not the same as uploading a recording: the VPS sends a live feed to YouTube, and YouTube may scan that feed for copyrighted material.
Before building the server, decide whether the channel truly needs one uninterrupted 24/7 session or whether shorter scheduled sessions will serve viewers better. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish how a single uninterrupted session lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived. If replays matter, validate current YouTube behavior and consider shorter sessions or separate uploads of the recordings.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and its encoder setup guide.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the stream URL and key. The exact screen labels can change; use the current stream settings shown in Studio.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in public configuration files, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement.
The VPS sends an outbound connection to YouTube. Lightsail’s instance firewall filters inbound traffic and permits outbound traffic, so an outbound ingest connection does not mean you should open arbitrary inbound ports. For Linux administration, restrict SSH (TCP 22) to your administrator IP range where practical; review IPv4 and IPv6 rules separately if IPv6 is enabled. See AWS’s firewall behavior guide and firewall rule examples.

Choose output settings for the recordings
Use the actual source footage and the intended audience to choose resolution and frame rate. A static pulpit recording may not benefit from 60 fps, while footage with more motion may. That is a content-based judgment, not a universal YouTube rule. Higher output settings increase encoder work and bitrate, and therefore increase transfer use.
| Output example | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | Lower detail and lower transfer use than 720p or 1080p. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | A middle option when the source and viewing needs do not call for 1080p. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | More detail than lower resolutions; budget for sustained upload and transfer. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | More temporal smoothness for motion, with higher bitrate and processing demand than 1080p30. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates for the listed output rows, not total stream bitrates; audio and protocol overhead add to the actual network use. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for other resolutions or frame rates rather than extrapolating a value.
- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported encoder codecs. For H.264 ingest, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Copy the exact ingest URL shown in Studio and use the matching key.
- Upload capacity: YouTube advises keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. For a 5 Mbps H.264 video stream plus audio, planning for more than 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity applies that headroom recommendation; it is arithmetic, not a separate YouTube benchmark.
Run a speed test and a realistic trial with the actual recordings, resolution, frame rate, and audio before relying on the stream. During a test and later broadcasts, watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and monitoring.

Provision Lightsail and estimate the ongoing cost
Lightsail bundles virtual-server compute, memory, SSD storage, and a data-transfer allowance. AWS currently lists a Linux/Unix IPv4 Nano example at $5 USD per month, with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. This listed plan is an example, not evidence that it can encode your particular footage. Measure CPU and memory with the chosen encoder and settings before settling on an instance size. AWS says Lightsail plans are billed hourly up to a monthly price ceiling; check the current plan and region details in its bundle table and instance FAQ.
Estimate transfer before choosing a plan
For a continuous stream, estimate data as total bitrate in bits per second Ă— seconds streamed Ă· 8, then convert bytes to gigabytes. Video alone at 5 Mbps uses about 54 GB per day in decimal gigabytes (5,000,000 Ă— 86,400 Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000,000,000). Audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other traffic add to that estimate. This calculation is not an AWS forecast.
AWS counts inbound and outbound traffic toward the allowance, but excess-transfer charges apply to outbound transfer; inbound excess is not charged. The allowance resets monthly and regional allowance details vary. Compare your estimate with the allowance and check current overage terms for your region before launch. See the Lightsail data-transfer guidance.

Keep the server address stable if administration needs it
A default public IPv4 address changes when an instance is stopped and started. AWS says an attached Lightsail static IPv4 stays the same and is not charged while it remains attached to an instance. A static address helps with stable administration or DNS; it does not keep the encoder process running. See AWS’s static IP documentation.
Install, loop, and supervise the encoder
The operational sequence is straightforward, but the exact FFmpeg command and service configuration depend on the file formats, playlist behavior, operating system, and restart policy. No specific command or systemd unit is established here as tested, so validate any implementation against FFmpeg’s documentation and your own test stream rather than treating an unverified command as production-ready.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Prepare the media. Upload the recordings to server storage and make an explicit list or playlist in the order you want viewers to see them. Check that the files have usable video and audio and enough storage is available for the intended rotation.
- Install an encoder and test one file. Configure it to send the file to YouTube’s ingest URL using the private stream key. Match the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to your selected settings.
- Test the loop behavior. Confirm that the playlist advances and returns to its beginning as intended, and that there is no unwanted gap or silence at transitions. Test the actual media rather than assuming all files have identical formats or durations.
- Supervise the process. Configure a process manager or equivalent mechanism to restart the encoder after a failure. Choose and validate restart behavior, then review logs and alerts; do not assume a static IP or an active VPS automatically restarts a stopped encoder.
- Verify the YouTube side. Confirm in Live Control Room that video and audio are arriving, check stream health, and check the public watch page. Repeat these checks after changes to the playlist, encoder settings, key, or server.
Monitor CPU, memory, outgoing network use, encoder restarts, and YouTube stream health. A small VPS may be constrained by the workload even if its advertised vCPU count looks adequate. Test for sustained operation with the real files before treating the setup as ready for continuous use.

Check rights before rebroadcasting a service
A recorded service can include music, performances, readings, and other material owned or controlled by third parties. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, a placeholder may replace the stream; continuing to show the matched material can lead to interruption or termination. A license does not necessarily prevent automated interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may receive Content ID claims after they end. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Confirm the permissions that cover the recording, the music and performances in it, and the planned YouTube rebroadcast. Having permission to perform or record a song does not, by itself, establish that the recording can be rebroadcast on YouTube.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the encoder connection | Live streaming is not enabled yet, the channel is ineligible, or the URL/key is wrong or stale. | Confirm channel eligibility and activation, then copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. Reset an exposed key and update the encoder. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Available upload capacity is too close to the total bitrate, or the VPS/network is struggling. | Check encoder bitrate, speed-test results, and server network and CPU use. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom; if needed, test a lower resolution or frame rate. |
| Video arrives without usable audio | The source file, audio codec, or encoder mapping may be wrong. | Play the file locally, verify that the encoder is sending an audio track in AAC or MP3, and check the Live Control Room preview. |
| The feed stops and does not resume | The encoder process ended, the VPS restarted, or the process manager is not configured to recover it. | Inspect logs and restart behavior, then test a supervised restart deliberately. Confirm YouTube accepts the reconnection and that the playlist resumes as intended. |
| The playlist stops at the last recording | The loop or playlist input was configured to end instead of repeat, or a media file failed. | Check playlist order and loop behavior; test the full rotation and inspect logs for an unreadable or incompatible file. |
| Transfer approaches the plan allowance | Actual bitrate, audio, overhead, or operating hours exceed the estimate. | Compare metered outbound use with the monthly estimate, review regional allowance and overage terms, and reduce output bitrate or choose a plan appropriate to measured use. |
| A stream is interrupted after a music match | YouTube detected third-party content, or the channel is not allowlisted by the rights owner. | Review the copyright notice, confirm the relevant rebroadcast rights, and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a VPS as a YouTube Live encoder?
Yes. The VPS can send an encoder feed to the stream URL and key supplied in YouTube Studio, provided the channel is eligible and the server can sustain the selected workload.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish archive behavior for one uninterrupted session longer than 12 hours; use shorter sessions or separate uploads if predictable replays are important.
Can I livestream church music if we have a license?
Only if the permission covers the planned rebroadcast and the necessary rights. YouTube may still interrupt a live match unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel in Content ID.
