You can loop recorded Baptist sermons on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but a reliable 24/7 broadcast takes more than a looping command: the channel must be eligible, the encoder and connection must stay available, and you need a plan for interruptions and archives. This guide walks through the setup and its limits, including YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.
Before you start: channel eligibility and sermon rights
Check that YouTube Live is enabled
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. An encoder such as FFmpeg is an accepted way to broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before planning the event; interface details and requirements can change.
Confirm rights for everything in the stream
Make sure the church has the rights needed to broadcast the sermon recordings and every included element: music, introductions, outros, slides, and other third-party material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may interrupt or terminate the stream, or replace it with a placeholder. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect the stream key
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and choose an encoder as the streaming method. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or source control. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Keep the URL and key private. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains how to manage them.

Configure FFmpeg for YouTube Live
Match YouTube’s encoder recommendations
YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Choose resolution and bitrate your source and sustained upload connection can support; a setting that exceeds either can cause dropped frames or unstable delivery. See YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the full recommendations.
Use the right command structure
FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: input options apply to the next input, and output options apply to the next output URL. Put the media input before the YouTube output. This conceptual template shows the shape, not a tested, copy-ready command:
ffmpeg [input options] -i sermon.mp4 [output options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the placeholders with the private server URL and key from Live Control Room, and select options for your actual files and installed FFmpeg build. Input looping, timestamp handling, scaling, audio presence, keyframe settings, and bitrate all depend on the media and setup. Consult the official FFmpeg command-line documentation; do not assume a command copied from another setup will handle your files correctly.

Test before going public
-
Start with an unlisted or private event and confirm that FFmpeg connects and YouTube receives the stream.
-
Use test content with audio and movement similar to the real sermons. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems.

YouTube recommends testing, monitoring stream health, and keeping a local archive. These checks are especially important before relying on a long-running broadcast.
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from connection failures
The FFmpeg documentation includes a FIFO muxer example for streaming to an RTMP server. It continues real-time processing during temporary network outages and attempts to recover streaming every second indefinitely. This is a recovery aid, not a guarantee of end-to-end uptime: it cannot ensure that YouTube’s ingest session, the host, power, or the internet connection remains available. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation for the documented example and its options.
For a 24/7 setup, plan who will notice a failure and how it will be restarted or investigated. A local computer requires power and a working network connection for the entire broadcast. Hosted compute changes who maintains the machine and connection, but this guide does not recommend or validate a particular provider.

Plan the 24/7 schedule around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24-hour event is therefore not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube archive. Keep a local recording, and publish sermon-specific videos separately if people need dependable on-demand access to individual sermons. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Choose a schedule that fits the church’s priorities
-
One continuous event: simpler continuity, but it crosses YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold and does not guarantee a complete platform archive.
-
Shorter scheduled events: may make archive management more practical, but require event scheduling and operational coordination. YouTube’s archive guidance describes the under-12-hour window; the scheduling choice is an operational consideration, not a guarantee of capture.
-
One pre-rendered loop or a playlist: a single file is simpler to prepare; a playlist offers control over sermon order. Test transitions and timestamps with your own media before broadcasting.

Local archive: gives the church a separate copy to manage and retain. Plan storage capacity around the library and retention period instead of relying solely on YouTube’s archive.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube | Incorrect server URL or stream key, an event that is not ready, or an unavailable network connection. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the event is configured for an encoder, and verify the host’s connection. Reset a key if it may have been exposed. |
| YouTube receives video but reports poor stream health | Bitrate, resolution, or keyframe settings do not fit YouTube’s recommendations or the available upload connection. | Check the encoder settings: H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and a bitrate and resolution the source and connection can sustain. |
| Audio is missing or incompatible | The source has no usable audio stream, or the output audio configuration is unsuitable. | Inspect the source and FFmpeg output configuration; YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio. Test with the actual sermon file before the public event. |
| The stream stops after a network interruption | The encoder host or connection failed, or the ingest session did not recover. | Check the host, power, and network. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from temporary send failures, but does not guarantee that the whole system or YouTube session stays online. |
| A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | The event exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured. | Maintain a local recording and publish individual sermons separately when on-demand access matters. |
| The stream is interrupted for a copyright match | YouTube detected third-party material in the live feed. | Review the rights for the matched recording or music and the channel’s Content ID allowlisting status. Do not assume a license alone will prevent an interruption. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an always-on FFmpeg computer at the church, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a sermon recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
