You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast of prerecorded church services by sending a rights-cleared playlist to YouTube Live through an encoder or cloud playout service. Before you start, verify the channel’s live-stream eligibility, decide how the feed will be kept running, test the full playback path, and plan for copyright checks and the limits of YouTube’s live archive.
Choose how the continuous feed will run
A 24/7 broadcast needs a source that keeps playing and a way to send that source to YouTube Live. The practical choice is between a local encoder and cloud playout. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory also lists Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 streaming; that listing is not an endorsement or a comparison of services.
| Approach | May fit when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer with software encoder | Your church already has a suitable computer and someone to maintain the stream. | Power and network continuity, restart behavior, monitoring, and who can respond to an interruption. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | You have a dedicated AV setup or a higher-production-value workflow. | YouTube compatibility, inputs, supported formats and resolutions, failover, support, and cost. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not required to get started. YouTube encoder guidance. |
| Cloud prerecorded playout | You want the playlist to run without a dedicated local computer maintaining the feed. | Current plan limits, file handling, restart and recovery behavior, support, rights controls, and cost. YouTube’s directory lists Gyre for this use case: YouTube’s verified-encoder directory. |
For a do-it-yourself setup, use the computer or hardware encoder you can reliably supervise. There is no encoder setting that compensates for an unattended machine losing power, a failed internet connection, or a playlist that ends unexpectedly.
Clear every part of the program before scheduling it
Make an inventory of each service recording and every element inside it: music, hymns, performances, slides, images, readings, and other third-party material. Confirm that your church has permission for online live transmission and for any archive you intend to retain, including the relevant territories. The exact rights needed depend on the work, rights holders, jurisdiction, and whether the recording will remain available afterward; platform guidance cannot determine whether a particular church’s licenses cover its use.

YouTube’s livestream terms put the responsibility on the provider, stating: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” This is YouTube’s stated provider obligation, not legal advice about a specific license. YouTube Terms of Service.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder replacing the live stream, and persistent matches can interrupt or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. Ask rights holders about allowlisting before your test, and retain documentation of permissions. Check live-stream eligibility and create the YouTube stream
- Verify the channel and check its status. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream there, following the current prompts for an encoder-based broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. Keep it out of public documents and rotate it if it is exposed.
- Send a test feed and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the expected video and audio arrive before making the broadcast public or starting the ongoing schedule.
Build and test the playlist as a continuous program
Load only cleared files into the playout schedule. Check the handoffs between services as carefully as the individual recordings: look for black frames, silent gaps, abrupt endings, unplanned end cards, or an audio level change at a file boundary. Listen as well as watch; a preview that looks right can still have missing or distorted sound.
Test the stream from the encoder through to the YouTube watch page, using a separate device to check what viewers receive. Simulate or safely test what happens if the connection drops and when one file ends. Make sure you know how to restart the source and resume sending to YouTube. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, assessing accessibility, and monitoring audio and video during a live stream. YouTube streaming tips.

Allow enough upload capacity and assign monitoring
Estimate the total outgoing bitrate for the primary feed and any backup feed you intend to send. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above that bitrate total, including the backup when applicable. The available upload capacity must remain sufficient during the broadcast, not just during a speed test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Assign a person or an alerting process to notice if the stream stops and verify picture and sound. A playlist can keep advancing while the audience receives a frozen image, missing audio, or no feed at all; periodic checks should cover both the encoder and the public watch page.

Plan separately for service archives
YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours, according to its encoder guidance. Do not treat a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours as a reliable single archive of every service in it. Keep the original files, and if individual YouTube archives matter, schedule separately bounded broadcasts and confirm YouTube’s current behavior before relying on those recordings. YouTube encoder setup guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep monetization separate from technical setup
Being able to stream does not mean a channel will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s policy update of July 15, 2025 clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy; reused-content review remains in effect and applies at the channel level, including videos, descriptions, and metadata. Rights clearance and monetization eligibility are different questions. Explain the church’s ownership, original contribution, and purpose clearly, and do not assume that looping service recordings will be monetized. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | The channel is not verified, has a restriction in the preceding 90 days, or first-time activation is still processing. | Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio; complete verification and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The encoder is sending, but Live Control Room has no usable preview. | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the encoder may not be sending its output as expected. | Recheck the URL and key in the encoder, then confirm the feed in Live Control Room before proceeding. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable. | Upload capacity may be insufficient, or the local source, network, or power may have failed. | Check actual outgoing bitrate against available upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test restart and recovery procedures. |
| A placeholder appears or the stream is interrupted. | YouTube may have detected third-party content, including material for which the channel is not allowlisted. | Review the rights for the matched material and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent live interruption. |
| A long broadcast is missing as a complete archive. | Continuous streams longer than 12 hours should not be relied on as one automatically archived recording. | Retain source files and plan shorter, separately bounded broadcasts if individual YouTube archives are needed. |
