Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can run a 24/7 YouTube broadcast from a Windows cloud virtual machine (VM) by installing an encoder such as OBS, configuring a video and audio source, and sending the encoder output to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. The VM replaces your home computer as the encoder host, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream: you still need to test the workload and plan how to recover from disconnects or a VM reboot.
Before you start: check channel access and choose your source
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to go live. You can check eligibility and start the process through YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
Decide what the VM will broadcast. A prerecorded documentary, graphics, a browser scene, a camera, or a combination all need a source that OBS can access. Files and scenes created inside the VM are different from physical camera or HDMI inputs: remote device passthrough depends on the cloud provider, and the cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish that a particular VM supports it. Confirm device access with the provider before building a workflow around physical capture hardware.
For a documentary channel using recorded material, confirm that you have the rights to stream every video, soundtrack, image, and other element. A live encoder does not grant copyright permission, and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and encoder instructions do not determine whether specific content is licensed for your channel.

Choose and prepare a Windows cloud VM
Choose a Windows VM that can stay running and has enough processing capacity and dependable network egress for your intended source, resolution, frame rate, and OBS scene. There is no provider-independent VM size or cost established here; capacity, regional network performance, and pricing vary by host and workload. An OBS-compatible VM is not necessarily powerful enough for your chosen stream. The OBS Project lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as baseline requirements, and cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See its system requirements.
For a virtual source such as a media file or browser scene, make sure it remains available to OBS after reconnecting to the VM and after any planned restart. Before settling on a VM, check the host’s Windows availability, persistent-operation behavior, outbound bandwidth terms, and any device passthrough requirements. The cited official guidance does not provide a cloud-provider sizing table, price list, or guaranteed uptime.

Install OBS and configure the broadcast
- Install OBS. Get OBS from the official download page and follow the Windows installation instructions. The download page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support.
- Build a scene around the source. Add the media, graphics, browser, or other sources you intend to show, then check that the audio source is present and audible. Confirm the scene behaves as intended when the source changes or reaches the end of a file.
- Set the output format. Choose the resolution and frame rate you want viewers to receive. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then validate its settings under sustained load at your actual scene complexity. A wizard result is not proof that the VM can encode continuously.
- Check the VM’s actual encoding capacity. Software encoding uses CPU resources; hardware encoding depends on compatible hardware being exposed to the VM. YouTube notes that NVIDIA GPUs include hardware-based NVENC, but that does not establish that your chosen cloud VM has an available, compatible GPU. Choose based on what the host supplies and your sustained test results.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select the stream you plan to reuse, and choose its visibility and other stream settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains stream management.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use the destination and credentials shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public screenshot, shared log, or article or command example. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. Select YouTube or RTMPS if available, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection; see YouTube’s RTMPS explanation.
- Start a test transmission and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check that the intended image and audio appear in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends testing and reviewing stream health; its live-streaming tips cover these checks.
Choose bitrate, keyframes, and output quality
Use YouTube’s encoder settings for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. For H.264, the figures below distinguish YouTube Help’s minimum bitrate from its recommended bitrate; they are not interchangeable. YouTube’s settings guidance was accessed on 2026-10-03 and may change. The table covers only the listed H.264 modes, not every codec or output configuration.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s H.264 minimum and recommended values for each stated resolution and frame rate, not a promise that a VM can sustain the output. YouTube recommends choosing quality your upload connection can support reliably and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run that test from the VM’s network path, then assess OBS load and YouTube stream health during a sustained test. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Rate control: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Video and audio: The RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match your OBS encoder choices to YouTube’s current guidance and the capabilities of the VM.
- Network and processing: The VM must have sufficient egress for the selected bitrate and enough processing capacity for the source and scene. If the signal is unstable or encoding is overloaded, test a lower resolution or frame rate rather than assuming the VM’s nominal compatibility is sufficient.
Plan for an actual 24/7 operation
A successful short test shows that the configuration can send a signal under those test conditions; it does not establish that the stream will remain uninterrupted for days. A 24/7 setup also depends on the cloud host keeping the VM running, network egress remaining usable, the source remaining available, and an operator-defined response to a failed encoder or disconnected stream.
Before relying on the stream, run an extended test at the intended output settings. Confirm the scene and audio continue as expected, watch OBS for encoding or connection problems, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion and monitoring the stream; its guidance does not supply a cloud-VM restart or watchdog recipe.

Decide how you will notice a failure and who will respond. Confirm with your provider how VM shutdowns, maintenance, and recovery are handled. Separately test what happens to OBS and the YouTube broadcast after a VM reconnect or reboot. The cited documentation does not establish a Windows Task Scheduler recipe, service wrapper, watchdog, or command-line procedure that guarantees unattended recovery, so do not treat automatic Windows login or application launch as proof that a YouTube broadcast has resumed.

- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred in the previous 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- OBS cannot connect: Confirm the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and check that OBS is using the intended YouTube or RTMPS destination. Replace an exposed key rather than continuing to use it.
- The preview is blank or shows the wrong material: Check that the active OBS scene contains the intended source and that the source is accessible inside the VM. For a physical camera or capture input, verify that the cloud host actually supports access to that device.
- Video or audio quality is poor: Check OBS output settings against YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm the VM’s upload path can sustain the bitrate and that the source and encoder are not overloading available resources.
- The stream stops after a disconnect or reboot: Check whether the VM is still running, whether OBS is transmitting, and whether the source is available. Follow your tested recovery procedure and verify the renewed signal in Live Control Room; a VM alone does not guarantee broadcast recovery.

What this approach does—and does not—establish
A Windows VM with OBS is a self-managed way to send a YouTube encoder feed, giving you flexibility over Windows-based sources and scenes. YouTube’s encoder directory also names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video, but its current pricing, terms, and fit for sources other than prerecorded video are not established here. StreamNeo is another cloud option specifically for uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube; it does not replace a camera-based live production workflow.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal VM size, provider price, egress cost, uptime guarantee, or unattended recovery configuration. Check those details with the cloud host and validate the exact workload before treating a setup as operationally reliable.
