How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Synology NAS Without a Computer

A Synology NAS can broadcast supported camera feeds through Surveillance Station. Looping prerecorded video requires a separate NAS-hosted encoder and model-specific testing.

Short answer: You can broadcast a supported camera feed from Synology Surveillance Station to YouTube without a separate computer. Looping prerecorded videos is different: Synology’s documented Live Broadcast feature is for camera feeds, not arbitrary video files or playlists. A NAS-hosted encoder could handle prerecorded media, but compatibility depends on your exact NAS, DSM version and encoder setup, so test it rather than assuming every Synology NAS can do it.

First, identify what you want to stream

Source Practical route What to verify
Live IP camera Use Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature to send a selected camera feed to YouTube. Feature and interface availability for your Surveillance Station version; camera and stream profile; H.264 output.
Prerecorded video or playlist Use a separate encoder running on the NAS, if your model and DSM setup support it, to loop media and send the resulting stream to YouTube. Container/encoder compatibility, sustained encoding load, restart behavior and stream recovery on your specific NAS.

Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation describes selecting a camera and stream profile, and says the feature supports H.264. It does not describe looping arbitrary files. The cited page is for Surveillance Station version 8; check the documentation and controls for the version installed on your system.

Set up a camera broadcast with Surveillance Station

  1. Confirm YouTube eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements before configuring the NAS.
  2. Create or prepare a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key as a password: keep it private, and do not include a working key in screenshots, configuration files shared publicly or logs.
  3. Choose RTMPS when available. Enter YouTube’s current RTMP path and key in the broadcast destination fields. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; use it if the available Synology configuration supports it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  4. Enable and configure Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, open Live Broadcast, set the YouTube destination details, then select the camera and its stream profile. Exact labels and placement can vary by package version. Synology’s documented feature supports H.264 video.
  5. Start the broadcast and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the image and audio arrive and that YouTube reports a healthy stream before relying on it. Test privately or unlisted first if that fits your channel and event setup.

Loop prerecorded video from the NAS

For stored documentaries or a playlist, the general architecture is:

Video files on NAS storage → NAS-compatible encoder/container configured to loop the media → YouTube Live Control Room.

This is not the same as enabling Surveillance Station’s camera broadcast. The cited Synology material does not establish a universal FFmpeg or container recipe, supported NAS models, or sustained encoding performance. Before investing time in a configuration, confirm that your specific DSM release and hardware can run the chosen encoder continuously. Test the intended resolution and frame rate for an extended period, including what happens after the container or NAS restarts. Do not assume a model that can store or play a file can encode it continuously for a live stream.

  1. Check the host first. Verify current container availability and compatibility for the exact NAS model and DSM version. Confirm the encoder can access the media directory and has sufficient CPU capacity for the intended output.
  2. Prepare a YouTube event. Create the stream in Live Control Room and copy its ingest URL and private key. Select RTMPS if the encoder supports it.
  3. Configure the encoder deliberately. Set it to loop the intended file or playlist and emit a YouTube-compatible stream. Use the encoder’s own supported options, rather than assuming a generic NAS command or container will work unchanged.
  4. Match output to YouTube’s settings. Choose a resolution and frame rate the NAS can sustain, then apply the corresponding current bitrate recommendation, CBR and keyframe interval. Check audio format and stream health as well as the picture.
  5. Run a test before going public. Watch YouTube’s preview and health indicators, monitor NAS load and network use, and verify the loop transitions correctly. Test recovery after stopping and restarting the encoder.

Choose bitrate and network capacity for the actual output

YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends different bitrates depending on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 30 fps, the current table lists these examples:

Output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independent performance tests, and they are not universal settings for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. Consult the current encoder settings and bitrate table for your chosen output. YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS.

Plan for a stable wired connection where possible. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream’s bitrate and warns that network interruptions can break a live stream. The internet connection, router and NAS all need to remain available; a NAS does not remove those dependencies. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and test from the network that will carry the broadcast.

Plan for continuous operation and YouTube archives

A 24/7 setup needs an operating plan, not just a successful first connection. Decide how you will check stream health, respond to internet or NAS outages, restart a stopped encoder, and replace a stream key if it is rotated or exposed. Test the restart path rather than assuming the NAS will resume broadcasting correctly after an update or power interruption.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one live event will remain connected or be archived indefinitely. Plan how you will end and restart segments, and how you want the resulting archives handled. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube receives no signal: Recheck the ingest URL and stream key in both systems, confirm the correct event is active, and verify that the NAS encoder or camera broadcast is actually running. Regenerate or re-enter the key if you suspect it was exposed.
  • Surveillance Station does not show the expected camera or profile: Confirm the camera is configured in Surveillance Station and review the installed package’s documentation. The cited version 8 page describes a camera-based feature; it does not promise identical controls across versions.
  • Video is unstable or stream health is poor: Check that the selected codec and settings match YouTube’s current guidance, then reduce output demands if the NAS cannot sustain the encoder workload. Check upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Audio is missing or incompatible: Check the encoder’s audio track and format; YouTube’s guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3.
  • A file loop stops or fails after a restart: Check the NAS-hosted encoder’s loop and restart configuration, file permissions and media path. These behaviors depend on the selected container and NAS configuration, so validate them on the actual system.
  • The stream ends unexpectedly: Check the NAS, router and internet connection, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and event status. Network interruptions can break a live stream; build recovery checks into the operating routine.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without maintaining a NAS encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
