The mini PC runs an encoder, which sends video to YouTube using the channel’s server URL and stream key. Unlike a cloud server, this setup depends on equipment and connectivity at your location, so test the complete setup and plan how you will detect and recover from failures.
How a mini PC streams to YouTube
The mini PC runs streaming software or a hardware encoder. That encoder sends the video and audio to YouTube over RTMPS or RTMP. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, you create or select a stream and give the encoder the server URL and stream key. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; its setup guidance says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch (YouTube encoder setup).
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Google for Developers describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection” (YouTube encoder settings; Google RTMPS documentation).
Check the workload before choosing a mini PC
There is no universal minimum mini PC specification established for 24/7 YouTube streaming. The right machine depends on what it must do: encode a camera feed or composed scene, or transmit a source that is already encoded. Decide the source, resolution, frame rate, audio, codec, and whether you need overlays or multiple inputs before choosing hardware. Then test that exact configuration under sustained operation; a specification that works for one stream may not suit a more demanding encoding workload.

- Encoding: Confirm the chosen mini PC and encoder support your intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and any HDR requirement.
- Network: Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the upload capacity actually available to the mini PC, accounting for other users and devices sharing the connection.
- Power and recovery: A local host depends on local electricity and network service. A UPS may bridge brief power interruptions, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or a YouTube ingest problem.
- Maintenance: Plan for software updates, storage, logs, monitoring, and recovery if the encoder stops or the machine restarts.
Set resolution, codec, bitrate, and audio
Use YouTube’s maintained encoder settings table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed requirements or evidence of a particular mini PC’s performance (YouTube encoder settings).

- YouTube’s current settings also specify progressive scan, a frame rate up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its stereo audio recommendation is 128 Kbps.
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its settings list CBR for bitrate control.
- For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check that your particular mini PC and encoder can sustain the intended codec and HDR workload.
Set up the stream and test it end to end
- Enable live streaming. Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Choose the source and output. Decide whether you are streaming a prerecorded loop, camera, screen, or composed scene. Set resolution, frame rate, audio, and codec; establish whether the mini PC must transcode or can send a compatible encoded source.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In Live Control Room, get the server URL and stream key and enter them in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s password and address. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs (YouTube stream settings).
- Configure the encoder. Use RTMPS where supported, select the codec and bitrate for your output, set CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, and configure audio. Confirm the encoder is using settings supported by the mini PC.
- Check upstream capacity. Available upload speed must exceed the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and advises counting primary and backup streams when relevant. A shared or unstable connection can reduce capacity or interrupt the broadcast (YouTube streaming tips). A wired connection is a practical choice where available, but Wi-Fi is not categorically ruled out.
- Run a representative test. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen to and watch the output, and confirm any local recording file continues to grow. Verify playback using the intended visibility setting before relying on the stream.
- Test interruption and restart recovery. Simulate a network interruption and a host restart. Arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder, failed source, lost connection, or reboot and to respond. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe a specific watchdog or restart implementation.
Keep the stream running—and decide what to archive
A 24/7 broadcast requires more than a successful initial connection. Monitor the stream’s quality and health, and have a response plan for a failed encoder, source, network, or local power. OBS notes that dropped frames or intermittent disconnects indicate a network problem between the computer and the ingest server; reducing bitrate is one troubleshooting option (OBS connection troubleshooting).

Continuity and archiving are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams can also have limited DVR rewind. If you need a retained video, record locally and verify the recording file; consider ending and restarting the broadcast before it exceeds 12 hours rather than assuming YouTube will preserve the entire run (YouTube archive guidance; YouTube DVR guidance).

Neither option is a universal cost or reliability winner. Compare current costs for your expected run and test the network and recovery path you will actually use; the available platform guidance does not provide comparable mini PC and cloud-server prices.

Troubleshooting a mini PC YouTube stream
- The stream will not activate: If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours and check channel eligibility and activation in YouTube’s setup guidance.
- YouTube shows a weak or unstable connection: Compare available upload with total stream bitrate, including any backup stream, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check whether other devices are consuming bandwidth. If using OBS and frames are dropping or disconnects recur, investigate the network path and consider reducing bitrate.
- The encoder cannot sustain output: Test the selected source, codec, resolution, and frame rate together. If the machine cannot sustain the workload, reduce output demands or use hardware that supports the required workload; no general minimum mini PC specification is established.
- The stream stops after a power or network interruption: Check whether the host rebooted, the connection returned, and the encoder resumed. Configure monitoring and test recovery rather than assuming the stream will restart unattended.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Check whether a local recording exists and whether the file grew during the broadcast.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Keep it private. Review YouTube’s stream settings and replace or reset the key through the channel’s available controls if it is no longer confidential.
