On a desktop Mac mini, let the display turn off while keeping the Mac awake: set the display-off timer in System Settings > Lock Screen, then enable System Settings > Energy > Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. The encoder can keep sending video to YouTube while the display is off. Apple cautions that preventing sleep may increase power use.
Set up the YouTube stream before changing sleep settings
- Enable YouTube Live. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the setup flow.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and choose an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: it allows the encoder to send a feed to YouTube. Keep it private and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Choose settings for your output and connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Resolution and bitrate should suit the intended output and the stable upload capacity you actually have. YouTube’s published encoder settings and bitrate table gives recommendations by resolution and frame rate; it does not establish one upload-speed threshold that fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers.
- Preview and test. Start with a representative audio and video test in Live Control Room. Check the preview, stream health, upload capacity and audio/video quality before relying on the stream unattended. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up in advance and monitoring stream health.
Turn off the display without putting the Mac mini to sleep
Use macOS settings for a dedicated desktop
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Set the desired interval for Turn display off on power adapter when inactive.
- Open System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- With the encoder running, let the display turn off and check YouTube’s Live Control Room to confirm that the stream remains live.
Apple’s Mac sleep and wake settings guide distinguishes the display timer from the desktop sleep setting. Labels or available options can vary by macOS release and Mac; if the exact setting is missing, consult the guide for the installed version. Apple also cautions that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption.
Use a temporary Terminal command instead
For a temporary run, open Terminal and enter caffeinate -i. Keep the Terminal process running while the encoder is active; stop it when the stream ends. The -i option prevents idle system sleep. Do not add -d if you want the display to turn off, because that option prevents display sleep. See Apple’s caffeinate command reference.

What display-off settings do not protect against
Keeping the display off while the Mac stays awake does not guarantee a continuous broadcast. It does not prevent power loss, network failure, encoder crashes, operating-system interruptions or YouTube-side interruptions. Arrange checks for the encoder, connection and stream health during long runs; the settings above alone are not an uptime guarantee.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says that streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as a complete archive. If retaining the whole program matters, investigate current YouTube duration and archive behavior and plan segmented broadcasts or independent local recording and storage. The stated under-12-hour rule does not promise what will happen to every longer stream. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Copyright and reused material still matter
A continuous stream does not bypass YouTube’s content rules. Use footage and audio you have the rights to stream, and check that any documentary clips, music, narration and other material are permitted for your use. Review the copyright safety checklist before building a long-running playlist.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or loses its picture
- The display turns off and the stream stops: Confirm that the Mac mini is configured as a desktop and that Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off is enabled under System Settings > Energy. Check the Lock Screen display timer separately.
- You cannot find the sleep option: Mac models and macOS releases can show different controls. Check Apple’s sleep-settings guide for the installed OS rather than assuming every Mac has the same menu.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key for the selected stream. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
- The stream health is poor or video stalls: Test actual stable upload capacity, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate as needed, and review YouTube’s bitrate guidance. A nominal connection speed is not proof that the full upload rate will remain available throughout a 24/7 run.
- The stream ends despite the Mac staying awake: Check the encoder, network connection, power and YouTube Live Control Room. Sleep prevention only addresses idle sleep; it does not recover from crashes, outages or service interruptions.
- The recording is incomplete or missing: Do not rely on automatic archiving for a 24-hour broadcast. The stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; plan recording and segmentation accordingly.
