You also need music and artwork rights, an encoder configuration that holds up under sustained use, a plan for recovery, and a decision about YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit. The bandwidth bill can exceed the Droplet’s included transfer: at 6 Mbps, one stream sends about 1.944 TB in 30 days before protocol overhead.
What you need before you start
Plan this as a playout system: a prepared video plays in a loop, an encoder sends it to YouTube, and you monitor both the VPS and YouTube’s stream health. You do not need a camera for this format. You do need to confirm that your channel can livestream and that every audio and visual asset is cleared for the intended use.
Check channel eligibility and activation time
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before scheduling a launch.
Prepare rights-cleared music and visuals
Use tracks and artwork you created or have licenses for that cover continuous livestreaming in the territories where you intend to make the channel available. Keep copies of the licenses and check that they cover live broadcasts, not just downloads, uploads, or a single use. YouTube’s live-content terms make the channel responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A Content ID claim can block, monetize, or track a livestream, and the result can vary by geography. A test that produces no claim does not prove that you have worldwide rights or that future streams will remain claim-free. Copyright permission is also separate from monetization eligibility: YouTube’s reused-content policy applies channel-wide, and permission alone does not guarantee acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program. Make the originality of your music, artwork, sequencing, or other added value clear without promising monetization.
Choose a Droplet and budget for outbound transfer
DigitalOcean’s pricing information checked on October 3, 2026 lists Basic Droplets from $4 per month with 500 GiB of transfer included for the 512 MiB plan. Its 1 GiB Basic plan is listed at $6 per month with 1,000 GiB included. Additional outbound transfer is listed at $0.01 per GiB. Allowances are pooled at the DigitalOcean team level, so other Droplets can affect how much transfer remains for this stream.
Do not choose a size solely from the channel’s resolution. The required CPU and memory depend on whether you copy an already encoded video stream or encode it on the VPS, as well as the codec, frame rate, filters, and other workloads. There is no established minimum Droplet size for every lofi stream. Start with a representative sustained test, monitor actual CPU, memory, and network use, and resize if measurements call for it.

Estimate bandwidth from the bitrate
YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p30 H.264 ingestion. At a constant 6 Mbps, the arithmetic is about 64.8 GB per day and 1.944 TB per 30 days in decimal units, before protocol overhead. That is more than 1,000 GiB, so a single stream at that rate can exceed the listed transfer allowance of the $6-per-month 1 GiB Basic plan. Actual billed transfer depends on DigitalOcean’s units, billing period, team-wide pooled usage, and the rate you actually sustain. Check your account’s current pricing and transfer use before launch; rates and allowances can change.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the bitrate you actually intend to send in your estimate. Lowering resolution may reduce bandwidth, but it does not automatically make a stream suitable: inspect the source material, test the output, and check YouTube’s stream health rather than selecting a profile by resolution alone.
Prepare YouTube Studio and the stream key
- Enable live streaming: verify the channel and request livestream access early enough to allow for YouTube’s possible first-time activation delay.
- Create a broadcast: in YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility, and other broadcast details there.
- Copy the ingest details: retrieve the server or ingest URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. YouTube provides both to connect an encoder.
- Protect the key: treat it like a password. Do not post it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or support request. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube describes encoders as software or hardware and lists OBS among verified software choices. On a cloud VPS, an encoder capable of running without a desktop session is usually more practical than relying on an interactive desktop application. The exact implementation is an operator choice: YouTube’s setup guidance does not certify a particular FFmpeg command, systemd unit, supervisor, or playlist arrangement.

Set an output profile and test it
Choose a profile that the VPS can transmit continuously and that fits the source. YouTube’s encoder guidance retrieved in 2026 recommends these H.264 and AV1/H.265 bitrates for the listed frame rate:
| Output profile | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS, source file, encoder, or viewing situation will work well. YouTube also provides minimum settings, but meeting a minimum does not establish that an image will look good or a stream will remain stable.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3.
- Ingest: use RTMPS where available for a secure connection, and copy the exact ingest URL YouTube supplies for the broadcast.
Run a speed test and a representative test stream with the actual audio and motion you intend to use. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the VPS’s resource use over time. A short successful test cannot establish that a feed will stay healthy indefinitely.

Loop a pre-rendered lofi video from the VPS
A simple design is one finished audiovisual file played repeatedly by an encoder on the Droplet. A compatible file can be stream-copied rather than re-encoded, reducing CPU load; that depends on its codecs and container being compatible with the selected output. If it is not compatible, configure an encoder to convert it and test whether the Droplet can sustain that workload. Re-encoding may require substantially more CPU than copying.
Basic FFmpeg playout pattern
The following is an implementation example for a file whose video and audio are already compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest format. It is not an official YouTube command or a universally compatible preset. Confirm that the source codecs, frame rate, audio, and container work together, then test the resulting stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on it.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/lofi/loop.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "$YT_INGEST/$YT_KEY"
Set YT_INGEST to the ingest URL provided by YouTube and YT_KEY to the stream key for the broadcast. Avoid putting the key directly into a shared or world-readable script. Protect any environment file or service configuration that contains it, restrict access to the VPS account that runs the encoder, and rotate the key if it leaks. The example uses a single looping file; playlists, transitions, and mixed-format assets need their own compatibility testing.

Keep the process running and observable
Run the encoder under a process manager or supervisor configured to restart it after a process failure, but first test how your chosen encoder and YouTube broadcast behave after disconnection and reconnection. A process restart is not proof of an uninterrupted viewer experience or a successful new YouTube session. Keep logs and monitor the encoder process, CPU and memory, outbound network transmission, available disk space, and YouTube stream health. Alerting and recovery behavior depend on the tools you configure; no particular VPS size or restart setup guarantees 24/7 uptime.
Decide how to handle sessions and archives
YouTube automatically archives live streams under 12 hours. Do not expect a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours to produce an automatic archive. If a replayable VOD matters, plan broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and decide how you will start replacement sessions. Each session transition can interrupt listeners; do not promise a seamless handoff unless you have tested and can maintain one.
If uninterrupted listening matters more than a VOD for every session, you may prefer a longer feed, but that choice should be made with the archive limitation in mind. Test your session workflow, including what happens to the encoder and stream key when one broadcast ends and the next begins.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show the incoming stream | Incorrect ingest URL or key, live access not enabled, or encoder not connected | Confirm live eligibility, copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room broadcast, and inspect encoder logs for connection errors. Rotate a key that may have been exposed. |
| Stream health reports instability | Insufficient sustained outbound capacity, variable bitrate, or excessive VPS load | Check the actual outgoing bitrate and Droplet resource use during a representative test. Use CBR, reduce the profile if necessary, and retest rather than assuming a brief speed test proves sustained capacity. |
| Video or audio fails to play correctly | Source codecs, container, frame rate, or audio format do not match the encoder’s output | Inspect the source and encoder output settings. Test a short broadcast with the same file and settings; use a compatible source or re-encode only if the VPS can sustain it. |
| The encoder exits or the feed stops | Process crash, exhausted resources, disk issue, network interruption, or a session-state problem | Check encoder logs, CPU and memory, disk space, and network transmission. Test recovery behavior deliberately and monitor whether YouTube receives the reconnected feed; a process restart by itself does not ensure a restored broadcast. |
| The stream runs but no automatic replay appears | The broadcast lasted 12 hours or more | Use sessions under 12 hours when automatic archiving is important and plan the replacement-session transition. |
| A music claim or regional block appears | Content ID matched audio or rights differ by territory | Review the claim and the relevant license terms. Do not treat a lack of claims during an earlier test as proof of rights or future availability. |
