You can run a continuous YouTube channel from a Windows PC by sending an encoder such as OBS Studio a video or scene, connecting it to YouTube Live Control Room with a stream key, and keeping the PC, power and internet connection running. The setup can fail if any of those parts stop, so test the full path, leave upload headroom, record a local copy and plan how you will recover from a disconnect. YouTube describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; a longer stream may not be captured at all.
Check that your channel can go live
Before preparing a 24/7 schedule, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube’s requirements include a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; its live-streaming overview also states that creators must be at least 16. Start with YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements, then check YouTube Studio for any restriction or policy notice. A restriction is not something to work around by switching to another channel: YouTube says creators may not use another channel to evade a live-streaming restriction.
For a documentary channel, decide exactly what will be broadcast and confirm that you have the rights to every video, image, music track and other element. Repeating a video or playlist does not make it permissible by itself. Copyright issues and Community Guidelines violations can lead to a stream being removed or live access being restricted. Review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions before you schedule a long-running broadcast.
Plan the broadcast and the PC workload
Choose what viewers will see
Decide whether the broadcast is a camera feed, gameplay, graphics or a loop of documentary material that you are entitled to use. In OBS, arrange the chosen sources into a scene and check what happens between segments, at the end of a file and if a source is unavailable. Test the entire sequence rather than assuming that a playlist or scene will behave as intended for days at a time.

Check the computer against the actual stream
OBS Project lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Those are compatibility requirements, not a promise that a particular PC can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS’s System Requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoding demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then verify performance with your actual content and settings.
Decide how much supervision you can provide
A PC-based 24/7 stream depends on the PC staying on and OBS continuing to send a valid feed. You will need a way to notice a crash, restart the stream after a disconnect, and check that recordings and content remain in order. A consumer PC and home connection can lose power or connectivity; “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Install OBS Studio and make a test scene. Download OBS from the official OBS Project site. Run the Auto Configuration Wizard, add the sources you plan to broadcast, and check that both video and audio appear as expected. If you are using pre-recorded material, use files you have permission to stream.
- Create or manage a stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio and use Live Control Room to create or manage the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the stream URL and key workflow. Exact screen labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if it is offered in your installed version, and enter the stream key and server details provided by YouTube. If OBS presents a field for the stream URL or server, use the URL from YouTube’s encoder setup. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a recording, screenshot or shared document.
- Set the video and encoder options. Pick a resolution and frame rate your PC can sustain, then set the codec and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for that format. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS; it says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. Do not choose a higher quality setting simply because the PC can display it—the encoder has to produce it continuously.
- Match the bitrate to upload capacity. Measure upload performance at the place and time the PC will stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if your outgoing stream bitrate is B, plan for at least 1.2 × B of available upload capacity, rather than treating the stream bitrate itself as the required connection speed. If you configure a simultaneous backup feed, include the primary and backup bitrates before adding that headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the headroom recommendation.
- Prefer a wired connection if practical. A compatible Ethernet connection can avoid some Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot prevent an ISP or power outage. Repeat upload checks at the streaming location; a speed test is only a snapshot, not a guarantee of stable service. Shared networks and changing throughput can affect what is available to the stream.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. Start streaming in OBS and confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and displays a usable preview. Check the audio, image, stream health and access from the channel or watch page, including on a phone. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring the broadcast.
- Run an unlisted end-to-end test before going public. Let the test run long enough to check transitions, audio levels, source changes and the local recording. Play the recorded file back to confirm it is usable and that its size is growing as expected. Only make the broadcast public after you have checked the viewer experience as well as the encoder preview.
Choose settings without guessing at a universal PC spec
| Setting or requirement | What to use or check |
|---|---|
| Windows and graphics compatibility | OBS Project lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as requirements; these do not guarantee streaming performance. OBS Project (page dated 2021-08-25). |
| Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate | Choose a combination that your PC sustains and follow YouTube’s current encoder table for the selected format. The applicable bitrate varies with those settings; do not infer one universal value. YouTube encoder settings. |
| Rate control | CBR is YouTube’s recommendation in its encoder settings guidance. |
| Keyframe interval | Use the recommended two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings. |
| Protocol | Use RTMPS as recommended by YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. |
| Upload capacity | Allow 20% above total stream bitrate; count primary and backup feed bitrates together when both are configured. YouTube streaming tips. |
The correct profile depends on the PC’s encoder, the complexity of the scene and sustained upload at your location. Test the actual stream rather than relying on an advertised download speed or a minimum hardware specification.
Keep a 24/7 stream recoverable
Separate channel continuity from each broadcast archive
YouTube describes automatic archiving for live streams under 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, and YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. That threshold is about the automatic archive, not a guarantee that a stream under 12 hours will always be archived or that restarting on a fixed schedule guarantees uninterrupted viewing.

If you need a complete record, enable local recording in OBS, confirm the recording path and available disk space, and verify files by opening them. Work out how you will rotate or back up large recordings before the disk fills. Consider how a planned broadcast restart affects viewers, moderation and the archive segments you need.
Plan for failures you can actually detect
- OBS closes or the PC restarts: decide who or what will notice the loss of the feed and how OBS will be reopened and reconnected. Test the recovery procedure instead of assuming the encoder restarts automatically.
- Internet drops: YouTube notes that network disruption can break a stream. Decide how you will identify a disconnected feed and restore it when service returns. A backup connection is only useful if it is available, configured and tested.
- Power is interrupted: a PC cannot stream while it has no power. Whether backup power is suitable depends on the computer and local electrical setup; the available guidance does not establish a universal UPS size.
- Local recording fails: check free disk space, the recording destination and sample playback. Streaming successfully does not prove that a local archive is being saved.
- Content or policy status changes: monitor for copyright and Community Guidelines issues. A technical recovery plan cannot restore a stream removed or restricted for policy reasons.
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover where used, verifying local archive files, confirming access from channel/watch pages and mobile, and monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast. No single upload speed, ISP, backup-data plan or UPS recommendation can be made for every Indian city, home network and PC.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show a preview | Stream key, stream URL/server details, encoder connection or channel eligibility | Confirm the stream details in Live Control Room and OBS, check for channel restrictions, then reconnect and wait for the preview before publishing. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects | Available upload capacity, network variation or a dropped connection | Recheck sustained upload at the streaming location, lower the stream bitrate or output settings if the PC/network cannot sustain them, and keep the recommended 20% headroom. Test any backup connection. |
| Video stutters or OBS struggles | Encoding load relative to resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity | Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point; test a lower resolution or frame rate or a less demanding scene, then validate the result in an unlisted test. |
| Viewers hear no audio or see the wrong scene | OBS source selection, scene transitions or audio routing | Check each source and transition in the OBS preview, verify audio meters and listen to the unlisted test from the viewer side. |
| The expected YouTube archive is missing | Stream duration or archiving behavior | Check the broadcast duration and retain the local OBS recording. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured automatically. |
| The local recording is absent or unplayable | Recording configuration, disk space, save path or file integrity | Check OBS recording settings and destination, confirm available space, and open a test recording before relying on it for an archive. |
Estimate the ongoing cost and effort
A self-hosted setup has no single cost that can be quoted from the available information: electricity use depends on the PC and local tariff, and connectivity costs depend on the ISP and plan. The practical trade-off is also operational. A PC gives you control over your encoder and scenes, but the computer, OBS, power, internet and recording storage all need to keep working, and someone needs a recovery and monitoring plan. Test the real setup before treating its operating cost or availability as predictable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded videos without leaving a home computer and connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
