You can run a 24/7 sleep ambience YouTube stream from a low-power PC with OBS, provided the computer can encode your scene continuously and your internet connection can sustain the upload. Verify the channel well before launch, test the actual setup for heat and dropped frames, and use only content you have rights to broadcast. A local setup is not hands-off: the PC, network and power must stay available, and reconnect settings cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Start activation before launch day. YouTube live-streaming requirements
- A PC that can encode the chosen video and audio continuously, with adequate cooling.
- A stable upload connection, preferably wired Ethernet, and stable power for the PC and router.
- Original or properly licensed ambience audio, visuals and artwork. Keep copies of licenses and source files.
Clear the rights and originality checks
Copyright permission and monetization originality are separate questions. A license may allow you to use a track, but it does not by itself establish that a channel offers original or sufficiently transformed work under YouTube’s monetization policies. Build a recognizable creative contribution: for example, use your own field recordings, authored sound design, or meaningfully distinct scenes and mixes. Avoid publishing a large number of near-identical videos built from one static template. No particular loop, licensed track or AI-generated scene automatically qualifies a channel for monetization.
Set up OBS for a modest, sustained workload
Make a simple scene
Create an OBS scene with the intended visual and licensed or original ambience audio. Begin without unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters or capture devices. This keeps avoidable work out of the scene, but does not guarantee low CPU use on a particular PC.

Choose a starting resolution and encoder
Start with a modest output such as 720p at 30 fps, then test using the real scene. OBS notes that 60 fps can demand more resources than 30 fps and recommends testing before a live broadcast. If the PC supports a hardware encoder, it can move encoding work away from the CPU; the quality at a given bitrate depends on the encoder, and older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than newer ones. Match YouTube’s current stream requirements
Do not treat an OBS example bitrate as a universal YouTube recommendation. OBS’s hardware-encoding article gives 3,000 kb/s as a 720p30 example in its recording-settings section; for a livestream, follow the bitrate shown by YouTube for the selected resolution and ingest configuration. For the configuration described in YouTube’s error guidance, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Check its current Live Control Room requirements for audio format, channel count and sample rate; YouTube’s examples recommend 128 kb/s audio and show 44.1 kHz as a sample-rate correction. These are configuration checks, not a guarantee that every stream should use the same settings.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a livestream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, or use an encoder’s YouTube integration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or post it publicly. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview and YouTube stream-health checks before starting the public broadcast.
- Run an extended private or unlisted test with the intended resolution, frame rate, visual and audio. Monitor OBS statistics, YouTube stream health, dropped frames and sustained PC temperature.
- Test recovery deliberately by briefly interrupting the network and restarting the PC. Configure OBS automatic reconnect, but do not rely on it as a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Keep the local stream stable in India
Use wired Ethernet where possible. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; its guidance recommends lowering bitrate when needed and prefers wired networking over Wi-Fi. Check upload performance and reliability on the actual ISP connection at the hours you plan to stream, not just during a brief daytime speed test. OBS connection troubleshooting

Keep the PC and network equipment ventilated, and watch for heat-related instability during the long test. A UPS for the PC and router can provide backup power, but choose capacity based on the equipment’s measured load and the backup interval you want; there is no universal runtime or size for every setup. Likewise, measure your own PC’s wall power and local electricity rate before estimating ongoing electricity cost.
Plan stream length, archives and watch hours
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A single continuous 24-hour broadcast should therefore not be relied on as one archived replay. YouTube’s explanation dated August 12, 2026 says qualified public watch hours can come from public long-form videos and archived livestreams. Watch hours from private, unlisted, deleted or non-archived livestreams do not qualify. YouTube says monetized live streams may use ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships, subject to eligibility and availability. Ad slots are not guaranteed, and inserting more ads can interrupt a sleep ambience experience. YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic live mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour.
