You can run a continuous Rajasthani folk music stream from a laptop with YouTube Live and encoder software such as OBS. First make sure your channel is eligible to stream, secure the rights to every recording and performance, then connect the encoder to YouTube with a stream key and test the broadcast. A laptop-based setup depends on the computer and its internet connection staying on; plan stream handoffs carefully because YouTube says broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Before you start: channel access, music rights and equipment
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. If this is the first time you enable live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before scheduling a launch in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
Clear rights for every track and performance
Rajasthani folk tradition or a song’s age does not automatically make a particular recording free to stream. Rights may apply separately to the composition, arrangement, performance and master recording. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the creator to secure the necessary rights worldwide, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, and continued use can interrupt or terminate it. If you have a license for third-party content, ask the rightsholder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare the laptop and connection
- Install an encoder such as OBS. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge in its encoder setup guide.
- Use a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, plus headroom. A shared network can leave less bandwidth available than a speed test suggests.
- If the laptop lacks an Ethernet jack and you want a wired connection, check its ports and operating-system compatibility before choosing a USB Ethernet adapter.
- Keep the laptop powered, ventilated and connected for the entire broadcast. Disable sleep or automatic shutdown while streaming, and test those power settings before the scheduled start.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have already set up. Use YouTube’s encoder guide if you need to locate the current controls.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set up the broadcast visuals and audio. Add the video or playlist source you intend to show and an audio source for the music. Check that the chosen source can play continuously and that the audio is neither silent nor distorted.
- Choose resolution and bitrate. Match the output to what the laptop can encode reliably and the connection can upload consistently. YouTube’s settings table recommends an H.264 bitrate of 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; this is a platform configuration recommendation, not a guarantee of perceived quality. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs.
- Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS ingest protocol. Select the matching server URL in the encoder if it is offered for the stream.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the stream bitrate by 20%. Account for other devices and uploads using the same network, and test the connection under realistic conditions. Its streaming tips cover connection reliability and monitoring.
Test the stream before going live
- Use the encoder preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview to confirm the correct video, framing and stream destination.
- Listen to representative tracks from the playlist, including any transition or loop point. Check for clipping, silence, unexpected gaps and audio-video sync problems.
- Watch the stream health indicators and encoder output for dropped frames or connection warnings. A single speed test does not establish that the network will remain stable for a full day.
- Run a test with the same laptop, encoder settings, audio sources and network you will use during the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing similar audio and video before launch and monitoring quality while streaming.
Plan continuous operation and replay preservation
A laptop stream is not a set-and-forget system
The encoder runs locally, so the laptop must stay powered, awake, connected and able to play the source material. A power interruption, system sleep, software failure or internet outage can stop the broadcast. Keep the encoder and Live Control Room accessible so you can check stream health and respond if the connection drops.
Do not rely on one 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a continuous 24/7 broadcast and its replay are separate concerns: the live channel may continue, but the full event is not guaranteed to appear as a replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If preserving a recording matters, record locally and verify that the laptop has enough storage for the recording workflow you choose. You can also plan stream boundaries and restart the broadcast before it exceeds 12 hours, but each handoff needs an operator or reliable procedure, and a restart is not a substitute for checking the resulting archive. Keep local files backed up if they are important.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a broadcast | The channel is not verified, live streaming is not enabled yet, or a restriction is active. | Check channel eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video | The encoder has the wrong stream URL or key, or it has not started sending. | Compare the encoder connection details with the Live Control Room. Replace an exposed key, then update the encoder with the new one. |
| Stream health reports instability or frames drop | Upload capacity is insufficient or shared with other traffic; the laptop may also be struggling to encode. | Reduce output demands if needed, test the real network, limit competing uploads and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| The picture works but music is silent or distorted | The wrong audio source is selected, the source stopped, or its level is too high. | Check OBS’s audio meters and source routing, then listen to a representative track in the preview before going live. |
| A live broadcast is interrupted for copyright | A third-party match was detected, or the rightsholder’s Content ID settings do not allow the channel. | Stop using material unless you have the necessary rights. If licensed, contact the rightsholder about the Content ID allowlist process before restarting. |
| The live stream has no complete replay | The event exceeded 12 hours, so YouTube may not capture it as an archive. | Use a local recording and plan any stream handoff with the archive limit in mind. |
