First meet YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules, prepare a private stream key, test the loop and ingest in an unlisted stream, then monitor the computer and YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube states: “To live stream, you must have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and have a verified channel.” See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- A Windows computer with FFmpeg installed, the rain media files you intend to loop, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
- Rain audio and visuals that you recorded or are licensed to stream on YouTube. Check whether the license also permits monetization and replay or archive use.
- A stream created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, which provides the server URL and stream key for the encoder.
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing the broadcast, and monitoring audio and video quality. For an ambient stream, confirm that the sound is audible, the visual behaves as intended, ingest health is good, and the public or unlisted watch page plays correctly.
Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send content to your stream. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, tutorial, or source repository.
- Use an unlisted test stream first. Put the URL and key into the FFmpeg command only on your own computer, then check the preview and watch page before making a broadcast public.
- If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration to use the replacement. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Choose compatible video, audio, and network settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection between the encoder and its servers. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the endpoint you choose.
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that your upload connection or a particular computer can sustain it. Choose resolution and bitrate to suit a stable upstream connection; a mostly still rain scene may be acceptable at a lower bitrate, but test the result rather than assuming. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced settings guidance recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. For 30 fps, a keyframe interval of 60 frames corresponds to two seconds. The example below uses that relationship. The video bitrate in the example is illustrative; compare your chosen settings with YouTube’s current table and the reliable upload capacity available to the computer.
Loop rain video and audio with FFmpeg
This example assumes a video file with the image and a separate audio file with rain sounds. It maps video from the first input and audio from the second, loops both inputs indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the endpoint. Replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the current values from YouTube Studio; do not paste real credentials into public material.

What the important options do
-rereads an input at its native rate, which is useful when packet timing matters for live streaming. It is an input option, so it appears before each relevant-i.-stream_loop -1tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. It is also placed before the associated-i. It repeats the file only while the FFmpeg process remains active.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream from the first input;-map 1:a:0selects the first audio stream from the second.-c:v libx264selects software H.264 encoding. A supported hardware encoder is another possibility, but CPU load, quality, availability, and stability depend on the actual Windows system and FFmpeg build.-r 30sets 30 fps, and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP for the intended keyframe interval.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizedefine the example video rate-control values. Adjust them to a tested setting appropriate to the chosen resolution and connection.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the cited recommended stereo bitrate and sample rate.
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as the input loop count, with -1 meaning indefinite looping, and describes -re as equivalent to -readrate 1. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options and their scope.

If one file already contains both rain audio and video, you can simplify the input and mapping, but verify its streams and loop behavior first. Separate files offer independent choices for sound and image, but can have different durations or loop transitions. Test for gaps, clicks, silence, frozen frames, timestamp errors, or unexpected termination at the loop boundary. File and container combinations can behave differently; do not assume an untested loop is seamless.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Run the adapted command against an unlisted YouTube stream. Confirm FFmpeg connects and YouTube receives both the expected video and audio.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and ingest health, then open the unlisted watch page on a separate device or browser. Listen through a loop transition and inspect the image after the source file reaches its end.
- Only after the test is satisfactory, use the intended stream’s current server URL and key and set the visibility and schedule appropriate to your channel.
- Keep an eye on FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream-quality indicators during operation. Check for disconnections, audio loss, frozen video, or a stopped process rather than assuming that a command running once guarantees a continuous broadcast.
What “24/7” requires on Windows
A loop command does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a failed internet connection, prevent Windows sleep or updates, or confirm that YouTube is still receiving a healthy stream. A continuous broadcast therefore depends on the whole setup: computer, power, network, encoder process, and ingest.

- Configure Windows power settings so the computer does not sleep while streaming, and account for update and restart behavior.
- Use a reliable wired connection where practical and make sure the upload line can sustain the selected bitrate with room for normal variation.
- Keep the machine ventilated and monitor its CPU or hardware-encoder load during a long test.
- Consider a process supervisor or scheduled restart strategy only after testing the exact Windows configuration. The right method depends on the setup; no single watchdog command or recovery guarantee applies to every system.
- Monitor YouTube Live Control Room as well as FFmpeg. A live process alone does not prove the public stream is healthy.
Plan around YouTube archives and content rights
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise a complete automatic archive for a single broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer. If a full replay matters, plan around the under-12-hour condition and check current Studio behavior before relying on an archive for a longer session.
Use only rain recordings and visuals you own or have permission to use. A track appearing in YouTube’s live rights-management or Content ID settings does not itself grant permission to stream it. Confirm that the actual license covers YouTube livestreaming and any planned monetization, territories, duration, and replay or archive use. YouTube says channels in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize livestreams, but that does not guarantee that a particular channel or rain stream is eligible for ads.
