To run ocean waves around the clock on YouTube with OBS, send a continuous video-and-audio feed from OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, then keep the computer, OBS, and a reliable internet connection running. Create the stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and private stream key in OBS, test the actual footage and sound, start streaming, and confirm the preview before going live. Plan shorter sessions if you need YouTube archives: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before starting
- A computer that can encode your selected resolution and frame rate continuously. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer configuration for this exact workflow, so test your setup rather than relying on a generic hardware minimum.
- A sustained internet upload connection with headroom above your chosen video bitrate. Run an upload speed test and check YouTube’s stream health during a representative test.
- Ocean footage and audio that you created or have permission to use for live streaming, archived replays, and any monetization you pursue.
- OBS Studio and access to the channel’s YouTube Studio Live Control Room.
For a static or gently moving seascape, 4K or 60 fps is not automatically necessary. A lower resolution and frame rate can reduce encoding load and upload demand while still suiting ambient viewing. Choose based on the source material, computer capacity, connection, and a real test.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. Set the title, description, visibility, and stream options.
- Copy the YouTube stream server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in a public recording or screenshot. Reset it in YouTube if you believe it has been exposed.
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room for the scheduled stream so you can check its incoming preview and stream health after OBS connects.
YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow requires the encoder feed to arrive before you confirm the broadcast with Go live. The stream key allows an encoder to send video to your channel; it does not itself make a scheduled broadcast public.
Set up OBS for the ocean scene
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available as a service, then connect or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. If using a custom service option, enter YouTube’s server URL and key exactly as shown.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. Add the ocean video as a media source and add its intended audio source. Check that the video repeats cleanly if it is a loop, and that sound is present at a stable level.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video. Match the source where practical, but do not upscale low-resolution footage merely to select a higher output. For a calm scene, compare the benefit of smoother motion against the added encoding and upload load.
- In OBS output or encoder settings, choose a YouTube-compatible codec and configure constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its currently published table provides bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check that table for your exact combination rather than treating one number as universal. For H.264, YouTube’s examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support, but available encoder options depend on your OBS setup. Select settings your computer and network can sustain continuously, and leave upload headroom rather than saturating the connection.
- Check the audio sample and levels in OBS. Listen for clipping, silence, mismatched sound, abrupt loop seams, and unintended desktop audio before broadcasting.
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for playback, but that does not guarantee a particular quality for every viewer or connection. An ambient broadcast generally has little need to prioritize low latency; YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test, then start the broadcast
- Run a private or unlisted test using the exact scene, motion, and audio planned for the public stream. YouTube recommends testing representative content, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health.
- In OBS, start streaming. Wait for the feed and preview to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for the correct picture and sound. Review stream health and OBS for dropped frames or connection problems. Confirm there are no black frames, audio-sync issues, loop interruptions, or unintended desktop sounds.
- When the scheduled stream is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Keep the OBS computer and network available, and monitor the broadcast rather than assuming a failed connection will recover on its own.
Plan for genuine 24/7 operation
Decide whether you need an archive
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A longer stream may not be captured at all. If you need replays, schedule shorter sessions with deliberate handoffs and keep a local recording backup. Even with segments, check the resulting archives rather than assuming every session was saved.
Understand the DVR trade-off
DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream, but YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Shorter sessions may better fit a channel that values rewind and archive access over a single uninterrupted broadcast.

Have a recovery plan
OBS does not guarantee that it will restart a stream after a computer shutdown, application failure, or internet outage. For a do-it-yourself setup, arrange someone or a tested process to restore the computer, OBS output, and YouTube broadcast after an interruption. A UPS or wired connection may be useful considerations for your environment, but neither is a guaranteed fix for every failure.
Use footage and sound you have rights to stream
Use original media or confirm that your license explicitly covers live streaming, relevant territories, archived replays, and monetization if applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights for live content. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content; if identified material remains after a warning, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. A license does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its allowlist.

Do not assume that a repeated ambient scene will qualify for YouTube Partner Program monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially inauthentic, and repurposed content without significant original contribution as reused. The policy was clarified on July 15, 2025, to include repetitive or mass-produced content under the “inauthentic content” label. Distinctive original footage, sound design, or a meaningful creative concept may help establish contribution, but no single change guarantees approval.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or OBS is not sending output | Compare the values with the current stream in YouTube Studio, check OBS’s stream settings and output status, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Preview appears but stream health is poor or frames drop | Upload capacity is too close to the configured bitrate, or the computer cannot sustain encoding | Check OBS and Live Control Room indicators, verify upload speed, and test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate using YouTube’s current codec-specific table. |
| Video is visible but audio is missing or wrong | Incorrect source routing, muted source, unintended desktop capture, or a loop/source issue | Inspect OBS audio meters and source settings, then listen to a representative test from the YouTube preview. |
| Broadcast stops after a power, app, or network interruption | The computer or connection failed, or the encoder did not resume | Restore the computer and connection, verify OBS output, and confirm the stream is receiving in Live Control Room before going live again as needed. Test your recovery process before relying on unattended coverage. |
| Live stream is interrupted by a copyright notice | YouTube detected third-party material or the rights owner’s Content ID settings do not recognize the channel as cleared | Follow the notice, use media with documented live-stream rights, and ask the rights owner about its allowlist if you have a valid license. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a home computer and connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, loops the video, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
