The loop does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, guarantee uninterrupted viewing, or ensure YouTube creates one complete replay. This guide covers setup, encoder settings, testing, recovery, and those limits.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility requirements can change; check your channel’s current access in YouTube Studio before planning a launch.
- A prepared lesson video, such as an MP4, with the picture and audio you intend to broadcast.
- A computer or server that can run FFmpeg and stay powered on with a stable internet connection for the broadcast’s duration. The sources do not establish a minimum hardware specification; requirements depend on whether you copy the media or transcode it, and on the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- An upload connection that can sustain the selected video and audio bitrate, with capacity left for normal network variation.
Use only lesson recordings and accompanying music, images, and other material you have the rights to stream. A technically valid encoder command does not grant copyright permission or determine whether a channel’s content meets YouTube’s policies for reused material or monetization.
Create the YouTube stream and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- In the stream’s settings, retrieve the ingest URL and stream key currently shown for that stream. Use the displayed RTMPS URL where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the associated stream. Do not publish it, commit it to a code repository, or leave it in a publicly visible script.
- Set the stream’s title, description, visibility, and other event details in YouTube Studio. Start the encoder early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages before directing viewers to the broadcast.
Do not rely on an ingest hostname copied from an older tutorial. Copy the current URL from Live Control Room and pair it with the key for the intended stream.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval
YouTube’s published encoder guidance calls for constant-bitrate encoding (CBR), supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. The bitrate should suit both the selected format and the upload connection; YouTube’s recommendations are configuration guidance, not a guarantee of stream health.

| Example H.264 output | YouTube’s listed recommended video bitrate | What to set in FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Set -b:v and -maxrate to the chosen rate, and calculate the GOP for the actual frame rate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | Set -b:v and -maxrate to the chosen rate, and calculate the GOP for the actual frame rate. |
For example, at 30 fps a 60-frame GOP is two seconds, so -g 60 is appropriate for that cadence. At a different frame rate, adjust the GOP: a two-second interval is approximately twice the frame rate in frames. Keep it within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds. Confirm the current settings guidance in YouTube Help when selecting a different codec, resolution, or frame rate.
The command below uses 2.5 Mbps video as an illustrative setting, not as YouTube’s recommendation for every resolution. Choose a rate and output format your source, encoder, and connection can sustain. The example assumes a 30 fps output; use a matching GOP and frame-rate setting for your actual stream.

Loop a lesson file with FFmpeg
Basic H.264 and AAC command
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lesson.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<current-server>/<stream-key>"
Replace lesson.mp4 with the input file and replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key out of shared logs, screenshots, and public scripts. In production, load it from a protected environment or secret store rather than embedding it in a file others can read.
-rereads a file input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a file as if it were a live feed. Do not apply real-time input reading indiscriminately to sources that are already live.-stream_loop -1is an input option that repeats the input indefinitely. Put it before the-iit applies to. It loops the media; it does not supervise or restart the FFmpeg process.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264.-b:vsets the target video bitrate, while-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain rate variation for this example.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. It corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128kencodes AAC audio at the example audio bitrate. Confirm that the input contains the expected audio stream and that it is audible in YouTube’s preview.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style encoder workflow.
Check the file and the loop boundary
Before going live, confirm that the input has the intended video and audio streams and that FFmpeg can read it. Watch and listen to the beginning, middle, and end of the lesson. At the loop boundary, picture or sound may jump, pause, or repeat abruptly; an infinite loop does not make separate lesson segments seamless. If you are building a lesson sequence, prepare and inspect the playlist or combined program so that transitions are acceptable.

If the source is already encoded in a format suitable for the destination, stream copy may reduce encoding work. It is only appropriate when the source codecs, timestamps, keyframe cadence, and container/ingest compatibility fit the target. Inspect the actual media rather than assuming that a particular MP4 can be copied unchanged; transcode when those conditions do not fit.
Test the stream and watch its health
- Start the encoder while the stream is in Live Control Room, allowing time for YouTube’s preview to appear before the planned start.
- Check that the preview shows the correct lesson, that speech and other intended audio are audible, and that the picture is not frozen or corrupted.
- Inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages. A quiet test or static title card may not expose issues that occur during a real lesson, so test representative speech, music you are authorized to use, and visual movement.
- Monitor the stream during operation. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring health and messages while streaming.
Keep FFmpeg recoverable for a long broadcast
A looping input only handles the end of the file. It does not bring FFmpeg back after the process exits, recover a machine reboot, or guarantee that YouTube and viewers experience uninterrupted playback. Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor, arrange alerts for unexpected exits, and document a deliberate restart procedure. Protect the stream key and test the recovery plan before relying on it.

FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes a FIFO muxer example that attempts recovery after a temporary network failure, using a one-second recovery wait. This is best-effort behavior, not proof that the encoder process will survive every failure, that YouTube will preserve the event, or that viewers will see continuous playback. Test any recovery configuration under realistic conditions and retain a manual restart path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan separately for replays and archives
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is longer than that stated condition, so do not assume it will produce one complete replay or the archive behavior you need. If replay availability or lesson-by-lesson chapters matter, plan a separate local recording and archive workflow, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Wrong or stale ingest URL, mismatched stream key, encoder not running, or an output that has not connected. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, check FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, and restart with the corrected destination. |
| Video arrives but YouTube reports poor health | Bitrate or frame rate exceeds what the connection or encoder can sustain, or the output settings do not match the selected stream. | Check YouTube’s health messages, reduce the resolution or bitrate if needed, and test again at the intended settings before the public broadcast. |
| Audio is missing or too quiet | The input may lack the expected audio stream, or the audio level may be unsuitable. | Check the source file and FFmpeg stream selection, then listen to YouTube’s preview using representative lesson content before going live. |
| The lesson stops looping | FFmpeg may have exited because of an input, encoding, or network error; -stream_loop -1 does not restart a failed process. |
Inspect the FFmpeg error output, resolve the underlying failure, and use a tested supervisor or service manager to restart the process when appropriate. |
| The broadcast jumps at the end of each lesson | The final frames or audio do not join cleanly to the beginning of the file. | Inspect the boundary and edit or arrange the lesson material to make the transition acceptable. |
| A long stream has no single replay as expected | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. | Use a separate recording/archive plan if a complete replay is important; do not depend on one archive for an indefinite event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the prepared lessons to keep playing without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is three steps:
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality as supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does FFmpeg’s infinite loop restart if the computer or process stops?
No. -stream_loop -1 repeats an input while FFmpeg is running; a separate supervisor or service manager is needed to handle process exits.
Will YouTube automatically save a 24/7 stream as one replay?
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one complete archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast.
