To run a classroom playlist continuously on YouTube, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, put compatible video files in an FFconcat playlist, then use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and -stream_loop -1 to send the repeating sequence to YouTube’s ingest server. This keeps the stream running only while the computer, network, FFmpeg process and YouTube ingest remain available; plan to supervise and recover it.
Before you build the stream
Check livestream eligibility and activation
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable and test it well before the class needs the stream. Choose a controlled test
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio and test it as private or unlisted before broadcasting publicly. Use the preview to check picture, sound and transitions. Keep the stream key private: treat it like a password, and never put it in classroom handouts, screenshots, public scripts or logs.
Prepare a compatible playlist
Save a plain-text file named classroom.ffconcat beside the videos. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive for each item, in playback order:

file 'break-screen.mp4'The concat demuxer presents these files as one sequence and adjusts timestamps so each follows the last. For clean joins, all inputs need the same streams, codecs and time bases. Make formats and transitions consistent, and inspect each join for gaps, freezes or audio glitches. If durations are incorrect or estimated, timestamp gaps or artifacts can result; when a file’s duration is known, a duration directive can override it.
The concat demuxer’s safe setting defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths. Relative paths keep the playlist portable and are preferable when they work. Use -safe 0 only if absolute or otherwise unsafe paths are necessary and the playlist is entirely under your control.

Configure the YouTube encoder stream
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create an encoder-based stream and copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for it. The command below uses RTMPS, which YouTube recommends for encrypted transport. Do not publish the real key or leave it exposed in a shared command history; substitute it only on the trusted streaming host.
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into playback formats. Choose resolution and bitrate for your media and connection
The example requests 720p at 30 fps, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. Its 4 Mbps video bitrate is the stated minimum for 720p30, not YouTube’s current recommended 8 Mbps for that mode. Use a bitrate appropriate to your actual resolution and stable upload capacity; allow headroom rather than saturating the connection. The example is a starting template, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or media set.
Run the FFmpeg concat loop
Install an FFmpeg build with the required input and encoding support on an always-on host. Replace the placeholder ingest address and key with the values from YouTube Studio, and run this from the directory containing the playlist and media:

The paired GOP values of 60 frames at 30 fps request a two-second keyframe interval. If FFmpeg reports incompatible streams, timestamps or codec errors, do not assume the playlist will concatenate correctly: transcode or normalize the files to a consistent stream layout and time base, then inspect the joins again.
Test, launch and keep it operating
- Start FFmpeg with the private or unlisted stream selected in YouTube Studio.
- Watch the Studio preview and listen to representative classroom audio. Check motion, text legibility, audio levels and every playlist join before making the broadcast public.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and any messages during the test and broadcast.
- For a public launch, start the broadcast in the Live Control Room after the preview and health checks are satisfactory.
- Keep the host awake, the network stable and FFmpeg supervised. Decide in advance how the local system will restart a failed process, and rehearse recovery rather than assuming a 24/7 process will restart itself.
Continuous availability depends on the host, internet connection, FFmpeg process and YouTube ingest all remaining available. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not promise uninterrupted service or prescribe one universal restart configuration. A software encoder gives you direct control over the playlist and encoding, but it also leaves monitoring and recovery to your setup. YouTube supports hardware encoders too; the cited guidance does not establish comparative cost or reliability.

Plan for archives and classroom rights
Do not expect one automatic archive of the full day
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That does not establish that a 24/7 stream will produce one complete archived recording. Plan archive handling separately and confirm the current behavior in YouTube Studio for your channel. Source: YouTube Help on live-stream archives.
Use media you have the right to stream
Before broadcasting lessons, documentary excerpts, music, images or other material, confirm that your channel has the necessary rights or permission. A classroom or educational purpose alone should not be treated as proof that every use is permitted. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for the content and territory involved; do not use material whose rights are unclear. Check the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Livestreaming is unavailable: confirm channel verification and that the channel has no live restriction within the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours and test before the scheduled class.
- FFmpeg rejects playlist paths: keep files in relative paths and use
-safe 1. Only switch to-safe 0for a playlist you control when unsafe paths are genuinely needed. - Playback breaks at a file boundary: compare stream layouts, codecs, time bases and durations. Normalize incompatible files and inspect the transition; add a known
durationdirective if an input’s reported duration is wrong. - YouTube preview is unstable or reports poor health: check that the selected ingest URL and key match the active Studio stream, then compare the outgoing resolution and bitrate with the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot hold it reliably.
- The stream stops when unattended: check whether the computer slept, the network disconnected or FFmpeg exited. Keep the machine awake and add host-level supervision or a rehearsed restart procedure.
- The archived video is incomplete or missing: a stream lasting 24 hours or longer is outside YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule for streams under 12 hours. Handle recording and archive needs separately.
What it costs to keep FFmpeg running
If you already have a suitable computer and internet connection, this method avoids buying a dedicated encoder, but the host must remain on and your time or automation must cover monitoring and recovery. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify minimum computer hardware or a universal reliability level, so assess the machine and network you already have rather than relying on an unverified hardware recommendation.
