FFmpeg is usually the simpler fit for a straightforward prerecorded loop; OBS is useful when you need scenes or overlays, but its graphics and Remote Desktop behavior must be tested on the specific VPS. A VPS does not remove the need to monitor stream health, protect your stream key, or plan separately for a full-length recording.
Choose the right way to encode the stream
Start by deciding whether Windows is essential to your workflow. A static ambient loop generally does not need a graphical desktop: FFmpeg can read prerecorded media and send it to a streaming endpoint. OBS makes more sense when you need scene changes, banners, or interactive composition controls.

In a 2020 OBS forum discussion, administrator and developer R1CH advised: “OBS is not designed to be used headless. Consider using ffmpeg or VLC if you don’t need the composition features.” This is historical community guidance, not a guarantee about every current GPU-enabled VPS. Reports from Windows VPS users also describe virtual-display or graphics-session problems after an RDP disconnect; provider configuration, Windows version, and virtual GPU can affect the outcome. Prepare the video and choose YouTube ingest settings
Make the loop consistent
For cleaner transitions, use source clips with consistent dimensions, frame rates, and audio characteristics. Mixed sources can produce visible jumps or audible changes at transitions. FFmpeg can loop an input indefinitely, and playlists can be used for multiple items; the specific commands in third-party implementation guides are examples, not YouTube requirements. Space-Node’s 24/7 VPS livestream guide demonstrates loop and playlist workflows, but its automatic-restart example uses Linux systemd, not a Windows service.

Match the encoder to YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, and supports AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes; it supports up to 60 fps. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder and destination support it. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload steadily at that rate. Allow network headroom and test sustained upload and encoding performance on the selected instance. A simple, mostly static scene may place a different load on software encoding than complex moving footage. Do not treat a third-party VPS sizing table as a universal Windows minimum.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains how to manage these settings.
- Set the encoder destination. Enter the stream URL and key in FFmpeg or OBS, and choose RTMPS when available. Configure the codec, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval to match the output you intend to send.
- Keep the key private. YouTube treats a stream key like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or logs. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it through the stream settings and update the encoder.
- Test before relying on the broadcast. Start a test stream and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as the local encoder. A process that appears to be running does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy picture and sound.
For documentary, meditation, or other ambient programming, check that you have the rights to every video and audio track you broadcast. YouTube’s ingest settings do not grant content rights. A stream that includes material you cannot lawfully use may face claims or other platform action; check the relevant rights and YouTube policies before broadcasting.

Keep the stream running through failures and reboots
A 24/7 stream needs more than an encoder command: the process should be restarted after a crash and made to start again after a Windows reboot. You also need a way to inspect status and logs and to check YouTube’s stream health. OBS provides general help on streaming and dropped frames at its Help Portal; rising dropped-frame counts can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.

That service file is not a native Windows procedure, and its existence does not establish a Windows service or scheduled-task setup that works without an interactive login. Windows behavior depends on the VPS image, user/session model, encoder, and chosen process supervisor. Configure a Windows-specific startup and recovery method appropriate to that environment, then verify both a process restart and a full reboot before calling the stream unattended.

- Confirm the encoder is still running and its logs show no repeated errors.
- Check YouTube stream health rather than relying only on a local preview.
- Test what happens when the Remote Desktop session disconnects, especially with OBS.
- Verify recovery after an encoder failure and after a VPS restart.
- Watch CPU and network usage over time; a successful short test does not prove sustained capacity.
Plan for a separate recording if you need a complete archive
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not rely on YouTube’s archive as its only recording. If a durable full-length copy matters, use a separate recording plan and confirm that files are growing and usable. YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
