You can keep a YouTube livestream rotating through videos stored in Google Drive by using the VPS as the playback and encoding machine: a sync process downloads authorized Drive files to the server, a playlist or manifest determines their order, and an encoder sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. Drive is the source library, not the player; YouTube hosts the viewer-facing broadcast. The reliable approach is to prepare complete local files before they are due to play, rather than depend on Drive downloads during playback.
How the system fits together
There are three separate jobs:
- Google Drive: stores the source video files and grants the VPS permission to retrieve them.
- The VPS: downloads and stages the files, chooses what plays next, and runs the encoder continuously.
- YouTube: receives the encoder’s audio-video feed and presents a live broadcast for viewers.
In YouTube’s Live Streaming API model, a liveBroadcast represents the viewer-facing event, while a liveStream carries the incoming encoder feed and its streaming settings. Google for Developers describes a broadcast as “an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens,” and a stream as the resource that enables audio-video transmission to YouTube. A Drive folder does not become a rotating YouTube playlist by itself: the rotation logic belongs on the VPS.
For a straightforward setup, create or schedule the broadcast and configure the stream in YouTube Studio, then run the VPS encoder against the stream’s ingestion settings. The Live Streaming API can automate broadcast creation, binding, scheduling, and lifecycle changes, but it is optional for a basic deployment.
Prepare YouTube before configuring the VPS
- Enable live streaming for the channel and create the event in YouTube Studio. Choose whether the broadcast should be scheduled or continuing, and set its viewer-facing title and other event details there.
- Open the channel’s live control room and obtain the ingestion settings. Configure the encoder with the server URL and stream key displayed for the selected stream. Use the protocol and current encoder recommendations shown for your channel and input; there is no single protocol or setting established here as best for every account and video source.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public script repository, shared Drive document, screenshot, or routine log. Restrict access to the VPS account and configuration file that need it.
- Check the broadcast and stream state separately. A correctly created broadcast does not prove that the encoder is sending media, and a connected encoder does not by itself confirm that the intended broadcast is live to viewers.
YouTube’s guide describes reusing one stream resource for multiple events at different times, and says up to three broadcasts may be bound to one stream in its resource model. Reuse a stream only when the events share its settings; a separate stream resource is an option when different shows need different settings.

Connect the VPS to Google Drive
Authorize access narrowly
Set up a VPS-side sync process authorized to read the intended Drive files. Use the least-privilege feasible OAuth scope for the access pattern, and protect the refresh credentials as carefully as the YouTube stream key. Check that the account can download each file; the Drive API exposes a capabilities.canDownload permission check. A file being visible in a browser is not proof that the VPS authorization can download it.
Download media files, not document objects
For ordinary binary video files, Google Drive documents downloading file contents through files.get with alt=media. Drive also documents a long-running files.download route for supported downloads. Google Workspace documents such as Docs, Sheets, or Slides are not ordinary video blobs; they use export methods with separate format and size constraints. Put actual video files in the source folder, or explicitly export a Workspace document to a suitable media file before expecting an encoder to play it.

Use a manifest and local staging area
- Choose the folder contents deliberately. Enumerate only intended video files rather than treating every item in a shared folder as playable media.
- Set a deterministic order. Use a manifest or another explicit ordering rule, such as numbered filenames. Do not rely on Drive’s incidental listing order if the sequence matters.
- Fetch files ahead of playback. Download each file to a staging location and confirm it is complete and playable before adding it to the active playlist. Keep the currently playing set separate from files still downloading.
- Switch at a controlled boundary. Update the manifest or playlist in staging, then activate the revised list at a point where the encoder can change cleanly, such as between clips. Avoid changing or overwriting a file while the encoder is reading it.
- Record failures and recovery events. Log download errors and encoder exit status without exposing credentials. Configure a restart policy and an alert path so an unattended failure is visible rather than silently leaving the channel offline.
This staged design is recommended implementation guidance, not a guarantee that every VPS, Drive account, or encoder behaves identically. It reduces dependence on a live Drive connection during playback: if a temporary download or network failure occurs, the encoder can continue with media already prepared locally.
Configure rotation and encoding
Make the playlist compatible before relying on it
A simple FFmpeg-based design is one option, but no single command can safely be prescribed for an unexamined set of files. Clips that look similar to a viewer may differ in video or audio codec, frame size, frame rate, time base, or audio layout. Depending on the playlist method, those differences may require normalizing the files or decoding and re-encoding them. Validate a representative sample playlist on the actual VPS before leaving it unattended, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback while it runs.

Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio parameters using the current YouTube guidance presented for the channel and the characteristics of the prepared media. Confirm that the VPS can sustain the selected encoder workload continuously; a configuration that works briefly is not proof that a low-cost instance can maintain it. The available evidence does not establish universal numeric encoder settings or a minimum VPS size for a given resolution.
Keep the source playlist distinct from YouTube HLS ingestion
The Drive manifest answers, “Which source video plays next?” YouTube ingestion answers, “How does the encoder deliver media to YouTube?” They are different layers. YouTube supports ingestion protocols including RTMP and HLS. Its HLS ingestion path has requirements for media playlists, segments, media formats, HTTPS, and filenames; that ingest playlist is not the playlist of source videos in Drive. For a basic VPS encoder, use the protocol and settings shown in the channel’s live control room and current YouTube guidance rather than substituting an HLS segment list for the Drive rotation logic.

Automate YouTube events only if needed
If you want software to create or schedule broadcasts, the Live Streaming API requires a Google Cloud project and API setup, and Data API calls must be authorized by the Google account that owns the broadcasting channel. Keep this event-control work separate from the VPS media player: the API can manage broadcast resources, while the encoder still has to fetch, select, and transmit the media.

Estimate outbound transfer from bitrate
As a decimal-data calculation, sending continuously at B megabits per second transfers approximately B × 10.8 GB per day, before protocol overhead. For example, a continuous 1 Mbps feed is about 10.8 GB per day, or about 324 GB over 30 days before overhead; this is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a provider-published statistic. Substitute the bitrate you expect to use, then compare the result with included monthly outbound transfer and the provider’s overage rate.
Compare the costs that affect a 24/7 stream
| Cost or capability | What to check |
|---|---|
| Monthly server price | Current recurring charge for the exact region and plan, including taxes or currency treatment that apply to you. |
| Route to YouTube ingest | Whether the India-region network route to the channel’s chosen ingest endpoint is suitable for a stable, sustained upload. Region alone does not establish stream quality. |
| Sustained encoding capacity | CPU architecture and capacity under continuous load, or whether supported hardware encoding is available. Do not infer a safe resolution from a plan’s advertised vCPU count alone. |
| Outbound transfer | Included data, the amount your bitrate estimate consumes, and the cost or throttling policy for exceeding the allowance. |
| Storage and persistence | Usable disk space for the prepared library, whether it persists through restarts or plan changes, and the backup policy. Include room for staging new files before removing old ones. |
| Reliability and support | Provider uptime terms, backup options, support availability, and what recovery work you must perform yourself. |
| Managed alternative | Whether a managed service charges by active channel time, resolution, or configuration. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed transcoding product billed by active channel time, with rates varying by resolution and configuration; it is not simply a cheap VPS. |
Rights, Drive terms, and monetization
Only stream videos the channel owner has permission to broadcast. Google’s Drive API Terms of Service state: “Using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN) is not allowed,” and also prohibit broad distribution of copyrighted content without authorization. Downloading an owner’s working files to one VPS for that owner’s authorized stream is different in scale and purpose from operating a public distribution service, but assess the actual use against Google’s current terms rather than treating Drive as a general-purpose CDN.
Technical ability to stream a video does not establish that the channel or content qualifies for YouTube monetization. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies for the channel’s circumstances; a continuous loop alone does not establish an eligibility outcome.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a rotating stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The VPS cannot fetch a Drive file | The OAuth identity lacks access, the file is not downloadable, or the item is a Workspace document rather than a binary video. | Confirm the authorized account can access the file and check capabilities.canDownload. Use the binary download route for video files; export Workspace documents to a supported format first. |
| A clip is missing or the order changes | The sync process is taking an uncontrolled folder listing as the playlist, or a file is not fully downloaded when playback begins. | Use a deterministic manifest, download ahead of time, and activate only complete staged files. |
| Playback stops at a clip boundary | Playlist items may have incompatible codecs, frame properties, time bases, or audio layouts, or the chosen playlist method may not handle those differences. | Test the affected transition, normalize incompatible media if needed, and inspect the encoder exit status and YouTube stream-health feedback. |
| YouTube does not show the intended live event | The encoder may be pointed at the wrong stream settings, the broadcast may not be configured as expected, or the stream and broadcast states may not match. | Check the ingestion URL and key in the live control room, then verify the broadcast state separately from whether the encoder is sending. |
| The server appears cheap but the bill or stream fails | Outbound transfer overage, sustained CPU use, disk needs, or a weak upload route may have been omitted from the estimate. | Recalculate transfer from the actual bitrate, check provider limits and overage terms, and test sustained operation at the intended settings before depending on the VPS. |
| The stream disconnects and stays offline | The encoder exited and there is no restart policy or alerting. | Inspect the exit log, correct the underlying issue, configure restart behavior, and make sure an alert reaches someone who can act. |
