To rotate a VLC playlist during a scheduled YouTube livestream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, play the ordered playlist in VLC with repeat-all enabled, and route VLC’s playback through an encoder configured to send it to the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. When the encoder preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live. Scheduling the event, sending the video feed, and publishing the event are separate steps.

What you need to know before setting it up

  • YouTube Studio creates the scheduled event and its watch page.
  • VLC plays the media files in playlist order and can repeat the playlist.
  • An encoder sends the audio and video feed to YouTube. Treat VLC as the playlist player or source and use a YouTube-capable encoder for ingest.
  • A stable upload connection must sustain the encoder’s chosen bitrate for the duration of the broadcast.

VideoLAN documents a VLM playlist-broadcast example that sends output over HTTP to VLC receivers; it does not establish a complete direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS setup. The workflow below therefore uses VLC for playback and a separate encoder for YouTube ingest. VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example

Prepare and save the VLC playlist

Order and check the media

  1. Put the video files in the order you want them to play.
  2. Open each file in VLC and check that it plays, including its audio. Resolve missing files or playback errors before scheduling the event.
  3. Add the files to a VLC playlist in the desired sequence and save the playlist so you can reopen it for the broadcast.

Choose what repeats

VLC has separate controls for repeating the current item and repeating the whole playlist. For rotation through all clips, enable repeat-all rather than repeat-current. Test the ending of the last clip and transition back to the first: the repeat setting governs playlist playback, but it does not schedule or publish the YouTube event.

For server-side or scripted playlist broadcasting, VideoLAN’s VLM example defines successive inputs on one channel and uses sout-keep so output continues between media items. That example is a different configuration from VLC’s ordinary playlist repeat controls, and its HTTP output should not be mistaken for a YouTube RTMPS connection. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Schedule the YouTube livestream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, select Manage, and schedule a stream.
  2. Set the event’s title, description, visibility, and scheduled time. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can promote and lets viewers set reminders.
  3. Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key for that event into your encoder configuration. Prefer the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room.

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied for the event rather than guessing or reusing an address from another stream. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

Route VLC playback through an encoder

  1. Open an encoder that supports YouTube livestreaming. If it offers a YouTube or RTMPS preset, select it; otherwise enter the event’s server URL and stream key exactly as shown in Live Control Room.
  2. Add VLC playback as the encoder’s media source or capture source. The exact capture method depends on the encoder and operating system; verify that the encoder receives both picture and sound before going live.
  3. Set the output format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval in the encoder. The encoder sends the stream; VLC’s playlist settings alone do not configure YouTube ingest.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the event’s preview in Live Control Room. Check that video is moving and audio is present, then review stream health before publishing.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can accept

YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult YouTube’s current table for the format you plan to send rather than relying on one bitrate for every stream. Choose settings your upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

  • Video codec: H.264 is listed in YouTube’s guidance.
  • Audio codec: AAC or MP3 is listed.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate.
  • Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: choose from YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, while staying within the available upload capacity.

Test, start, and end the scheduled event

  1. Test the entire path—playlist playback, encoder input, network connection, and YouTube preview—before the event. YouTube’s live tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
  2. Start the encoder early enough for Live Control Room to receive the feed. Check the preview, audio, motion, and stream health. Confirm that the event’s visibility and public or unlisted watch page are as intended.
  3. When the preview is ready and you are prepared to publish, click Go live in Live Control Room. The encoder feed does not, by itself, publish the scheduled event.
  4. At the end, use End stream in the scheduled-stream workflow and stop the encoder as directed. A repeating VLC playlist does not automatically start or end the YouTube event.

Troubleshoot playlist rotation and the YouTube preview

YouTube shows no incoming preview

  • Confirm that the encoder is running and receiving both audio and video from VLC.
  • Check that the encoder uses the RTMPS server URL and stream key for the correct scheduled event.
  • If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.

The playlist stops after one item

  • Check that the playlist contains all the intended files and that the files remain accessible.
  • Confirm that repeat-all, not repeat-current, is enabled.
  • If using VLM, distinguish its broadcast configuration from the ordinary playlist controls; VideoLAN’s example uses sout-keep across consecutive inputs.

The preview is unstable or drops frames

  • Lower the encoder bitrate or resolution to fit the available upload connection, then test again.
  • Check the encoder’s stream-health feedback and confirm the connection can sustain the selected output over time.
  • Run a complete playback-to-preview test before the scheduled event; YouTube advises testing and selecting settings reliable for the internet connection.

The playlist plays but YouTube is not live

VLC playlist playback, encoder transmission, and publishing the scheduled event are distinct. Check for an encoder feed in Live Control Room, then click Go live when the preview is ready. Playlist repeat alone does not automate the YouTube event.

Copyright and livestream eligibility

Only stream media you have the rights or permission to use. A scheduled event and a working encoder do not grant permission to rebroadcast music, films, documentaries, or other copyrighted recordings. Review YouTube’s policies and the rights attached to each file before broadcasting; playlist rotation does not change those obligations.

Do not assume that repeated or reused material will qualify for monetization simply because it is streamed live. Check YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content policies for your channel and content before relying on a livestream for revenue.
