To rotate recorded lectures by subject in a continuous YouTube stream, make a separate playlist for each subject, then play the selected list through an encoder such as OBS. OBS can loop a playlist in order or shuffle its files. The documented controls do not establish automatic time-of-day switching between subject playlists, so plan to change lists yourself or use a separately validated scheduling method.
Organize the lectures into subject playlists
Sort and test your lecture recordings before setting up the stream. Create a distinct list for each subject—for example, history, science, or literature—and give each file a clear name. This is an operations choice: YouTube does not organize files stored on your computer into subject playlists for you.
- Choose an ordered sequence if lessons build on one another or viewers expect a particular curriculum.
- Consider shuffle for a collection intended for varied repeat viewing. Preview the resulting order and check that the lectures still make sense when played in that sequence.
- Play every file before broadcast and check that both its picture and audio are usable.
Set up a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video source to be available.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the lectures.
- Add the subject’s files. In the source properties, add the video files for that subject to the playlist.
- Choose playback behavior. Turn on loop to repeat the playlist. Leave shuffle off for the listed sequence, or turn it on for randomized playback. Looping repeats this playlist; it does not switch to another subject list on a clock.
- Preview the scene. Confirm that the video fits the scene and that audio is present. OBS documents the VLC Video source and its playlist, loop, and shuffle controls in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. For a first activation, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one. Scheduling creates a page viewers can share and lets them set reminders.
- Connect the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the YouTube stream to connect OBS. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it could send video to your stream. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts and sends the stream. Follow its current encoder setup instructions for the Studio workflow.
- Start sending and check the preview. If the stream is scheduled, connect OBS and start sending before the event, then complete YouTube Studio’s go-live step. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Choose a rotation method—and know its limits
One subject at a time
For straightforward subject rotation, load the corresponding subject playlist in OBS and select it when you want to change topics. The reviewed OBS and YouTube documentation describes playlist playback, looping, and shuffle, but does not establish a built-in clock-based scheduler that changes between subject playlists at set hours. Do not assume that loop or shuffle provides timed subject changes.
Automatic switching at set times
If the channel needs to switch subjects automatically—for example, science in the morning and history at night—you will need a scheduling method beyond the documented playlist controls. Validate that method separately before relying on it for a continuous broadcast; the cited documentation does not establish a particular automatic-switching setup.

Ordered versus shuffled playback

Keep the broadcast running and plan for archives
A loop setting repeats media; it does not guarantee that a 24/7 stream stays online. With a local OBS setup, assign someone to monitor the stream and handle failures. The computer running OBS, its power, network connection, files, and encoder all need to remain available, and a person needs a recovery plan if the stream stops. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast; see its live-streaming tips.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete video. If you need lecture archives, plan and verify a separate recording or archiving workflow rather than relying on a single 24-hour stream archive.

Pre-stream checklist
- The channel is verified and eligible to live stream; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube advises.
- VLC is installed, the OBS VLC Video source contains the intended subject’s files, and loop and shuffle are set deliberately.
- Each file has been checked for working audio and video.
- The correct YouTube stream URL and private stream key are configured in OBS.
- The Live Control Room preview looks and sounds right before you go live.
- A person is responsible for monitoring and recovery, and any archive requirement has a plan that does not assume one complete archive for a stream longer than 12 hours.
