To rotate several local gameplay recordings in an OBS-powered YouTube Live stream, add them to an OBS VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That documented workflow uses a playlist configured inside the source; OBS’s reviewed documentation does not confirm that VLC Video imports an external plain-text or M3U playlist file. For one recording, use a Media Source and its separate Loop option.
Can OBS use a text file as its gaming-video playlist?
OBS documentation describes a playlist of media items within the VLC Video source. It does not establish that you can point this source at a separate text or M3U file, what syntax such a file would need, or whether edits to it reload while OBS is running. A separate OBS Text source can read a file to display text on screen, but that is not the same function as a media playlist. Do not rely on a text-file import workflow unless you verify it for your exact OBS version.
OBS’s format guide also discusses playlist files used by HLS streaming. Those are part of a streaming transport format, not evidence that OBS’s local VLC Video source imports a plain-text list of video paths.
Set up a multi-video playlist in OBS
- Check your recordings and rights. Keep the gameplay files accessible on the computer running OBS, and confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the video and any music or other third-party material in it. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; detected material can result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination.
- Install VLC with the right architecture. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source to the scene. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the gameplay, use the Sources add control, and choose VLC Video. Add the local VOD files to that source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
- Set the playback order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to use the listed order. Turn it on if you want OBS to randomize the items.
- Make the playlist repeat. Enable Loop Playlist. When the final item ends, OBS restarts the playlist.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. Set the source’s Visibility Behaviour to match your scene workflow: playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is hidden. If your scene switches away from the gameplay source, confirm this setting behaves as you intend.
- Test the whole cycle before going live. Start playback in OBS and check that the files appear in the intended order, the final item returns to the start, and audio and visibility transitions work as expected. These controls affect OBS playback, not YouTube’s stream title, game category, or other event metadata.

Keep gameplay rights and monetization separate from playback
A working loop does not grant rights to stream or monetize its contents. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party material, and rights-cleared content may still require the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Check the status of music, overlays, cutscenes, and other included material as well as the gameplay recording itself.

YouTube’s guidance says monetization of video-game content depends on commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. Simple gameplay may not qualify for monetization without appropriate rights; commentary may need to be tied to the action and provide instructional or educational value. A playlist setup does not change those requirements.
