How to Rotate Background Visuals During a Continuous Meditation Stream in OBS

Use OBS Image Slide Show to rotate still backgrounds automatically, or loop a single video or VLC playlist. Set the timing, layer overlays correctly, and test before streaming.

Use OBS Studio’s built-in Image Slide Show source to rotate still backgrounds automatically while your meditation stream runs. Add images, set the slide mode to Automatic, choose an interval and transition, and leave Loop enabled. For moving visuals, use a looping Media Source for one video or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. Keep the background below any text or logos in the Sources list, then test the complete scene before going live.

Choose the source that fits your visuals

OBS source Use it for Rotation or loop behavior Trade-off
Image Slide Show A sequence of still backgrounds Automatic slide changes, configurable transition and timing, Loop, and optional Randomize Playback The direct built-in choice for still images; you control the pace and whether the order is predictable. OBS Image Sources documentation
Media Source One moving background video Enable Loop to repeat the file Simple for one clip; OBS’s cited documentation describes it as a media file source, not a multi-item playlist. OBS Media Sources documentation
VLC Video Source A playlist of video clips Can loop or shuffle a playlist Requires VLC installed; match VLC’s architecture to OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation

For a calm, deliberately ordered visual sequence, start with Image Slide Show and leave Randomize Playback off. Use random playback only if you want the order to vary. OBS settings control playback, not the meditation or sleep effect of a visual schedule.

Set up a rotating still-image background

  1. Add the source. In the scene you use for the meditation stream, go to Sources, select the + button, and choose Image Slide Show. Add individual image files or a directory. OBS documents BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, and GIF formats for image sources. See OBS’s Image Sources guide.
  2. Set automatic playback. In the source properties, set Slide Mode to Automatic so images change without manually switching scenes.
  3. Choose the transition and timing. Select a transition, such as Fade, then set Time Between Slides and Transition Speed separately. The OBS guide lists defaults of 8,000 ms between slides and a 700 ms transition speed. These are software defaults, not recommended meditation timings; adjust them to the pace you want and check the result in preview. OBS Image Sources documentation.
  4. Keep the sequence cycling. Leave Loop enabled to return to the first image after the last. Leave Randomize Playback off for a fixed order, or turn it on if you prefer a shuffled sequence.
  5. Check visibility behavior. The source has a Visibility Behaviour setting that controls what it does when it is not visible. Check this setting if you hide the source or switch scenes and expect playback to continue, pause, or stop.

Layer the background beneath text and logos

In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list render above sources lower in the list. Put the slideshow or video background below titles, branding, and other overlays. Select the background and use the preview to position and size it, or right-click it and use Transform options such as Fit to Screen or Edit Transform. OBS Sources Guide.

Check the whole canvas in preview: images with a different aspect ratio from the stream canvas may leave bars or be cropped when fitted. Make sure important text remains readable over every image in the rotation, not just the first one.

Use looping video backgrounds

Repeat one video file

Add a Media Source to the scene, choose the video file, and enable its Loop property. Keep it below overlays in the Sources list and check its framing in preview. This is the simplest choice when one moving background should repeat. OBS Media Sources documentation.

Cycle through video clips

For a playlist, add a VLC Video Source, add the clips to its playlist, and use Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. The documented default for Loop Playlist is On; confirm the property in your installed version. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must be compatible with OBS: OBS’s guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources documentation.

Test the scene and stream before relying on it

  1. Preview the scene and wait through several image changes or at least one full video loop. Check transition pacing, framing, bars or cropping, and overlay readability.
  2. Make a short local recording or test stream to verify that the stream output matches the preview and that audio and visuals behave as intended.
  3. Check the intended computer and network under the conditions you plan to stream. OBS recommends a test before the first stream; source looping alone cannot ensure an uninterrupted broadcast. Its setup guidance also notes that hardware and network conditions affect configuration, and 60 fps can demand more resources than 30 fps. OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • The images do not change: confirm Slide Mode is Automatic, the slideshow contains files, and the source is visible. Check Visibility Behaviour if you have hidden the source or changed scenes.
  • The sequence stops at the last image: enable Loop in the Image Slide Show properties.
  • The changes feel too abrupt or too slow: adjust Time Between Slides for how long each image is shown, then adjust Transition Speed separately for the duration of the transition.
  • The background covers the text: move the background lower in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear above it.
  • The image has bars or unwanted cropping: inspect its aspect ratio against the stream canvas, then use the preview or Transform options to adjust its fit and position.
  • A VLC playlist source is unavailable: install VLC compatible with the OBS installation. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documents the need for 64-bit VLC.
  • The stream still stops even though the source loops: looping is a source playback setting, not a guarantee that the full stream path stays live. Test OBS, the computer, and the network together before a long broadcast.

Check rights to every background

OBS’s source features do not grant rights to images or video. Before using a visual in a public or monetized stream, confirm that its license covers streaming and the way you plan to use it.
