You can run FFmpeg on a Linux VPS in India to play a sequence of local video files and send the resulting continuous feed to YouTube Live. FFmpeg—not YouTube—chooses which file plays next. The practical challenge is keeping the files, output settings, network capacity, and process supervision consistent around the clock.
How playlist rotation works
YouTube separates the viewer-facing liveBroadcast from the incoming encoder feed, represented by a liveStream. FFmpeg reads your media, rotates through it, and sends the encoded or copied output to YouTube. A YouTube stream resource can be reused for events at different times; each channel needs its own stream resource. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
This guide uses a Linux VPS with media stored on its disk and a persistent FFmpeg process. The exact playlist command depends on the installed FFmpeg build and the codecs and formats in your files; test the command with your actual assets before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Prepare the YouTube Live destination

From the event or stream configuration, obtain the ingestion address and stream key. Use the actual values YouTube supplies; do not paste a real key into a public script, log, screenshot, or support request.

Use RTMPS for an ordinary encoder feed. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS; YouTube’s guidance specifies a valid ingestion endpoint, the RTMPS scheme, and port 443. Some encoder implementations also need the documented TLS/SNI behavior. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Keep the key in a file or environment variable readable only by the account running FFmpeg, rather than embedding it in a script that other server users can read. Treat a leaked key as compromised and replace it in YouTube Studio.
Choose media and a sustainable output
Check every playlist file
Keep the playlist files in a known directory on the VPS, with adequate disk space and permissions for the FFmpeg service account. If files have different frame sizes, frame rates, codecs, pixel formats, or audio layouts, transitions may fail or produce inconsistent output. Normalize incompatible media to a common format, or use a playlist workflow that explicitly handles those differences. Verify the installed FFmpeg build supports the demuxers and codecs your files require; the FFmpeg documentation describes its options and muxing controls but does not certify a universal YouTube playlist-rotation command.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); supports frame rates up to 60 fps; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are encoder guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them reliably. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source material and server can sustain.

These are the bitrate setting ranges on YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, verified in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They are not VPS bandwidth guarantees. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes the live feed into viewer output formats in the standard Live Control Room workflow. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance.
Decide whether to copy or re-encode
Stream-copying avoids video-encoding work on the VPS, but is viable only when the input streams are compatible with the output and each other. Re-encoding can provide consistent resolution, frame rate, and bitrate across mixed assets, but uses CPU or hardware-encoding capacity. Measure sustained server load during a representative test; a plan’s advertised network port speed does not prove it can maintain the chosen outbound bitrate or encode the program continuously.
Build and run the FFmpeg playlist process
There is no one rotation command that is reliable for every FFmpeg version and mix of source formats. Build the process around the inputs you have, then validate it on the VPS. Use FFmpeg’s playlist-capable input or a wrapper that advances through files, configures each transition, and reconnects to the YouTube destination as needed. Confirm that the process produces continuous audio and video and that the playlist advances as intended.

Install FFmpeg from a source appropriate for your Linux distribution, and check the version and available codecs with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders. -
Place the media files and playlist manifest on the server. Use stable, explicit file paths and ensure the service account can read them.

Configure a consistent output profile: video codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR target, audio codec and bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the stream key out of any shared or world-readable configuration.

Point the output at YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion address and append the event’s stream key as required by the endpoint format YouTube supplies. Do not substitute an example key or assume an endpoint shown elsewhere applies to your event.

Run a short test with the same type of movement and audio as the intended program. Confirm the stream appears in YouTube Studio, audio and video are present, and the stream-health panel reports no unresolved issue.

Only after that test, start the playlist under a service manager such as systemd or another supervisor. Configure logs and a deliberate restart policy, and check disk space and process health regularly.
FFmpeg options vary by input and build, so inspect the installed version’s help and test transitions, end-of-file behavior, and reconnection behavior rather than copying a command without checking what it does. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real program, then monitoring stream health and its messages during the event.

Budget the VPS for continuous delivery
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so the VPS must have adequate sustained outbound capacity and any monthly transfer allowance must cover the stream. For a rough planning estimate, multiply the selected video-plus-audio bitrate by the hours streamed and convert bits to bytes; allow headroom for protocol overhead and variation. For example, a 6 Mbps feed represents about 2.7 GB per hour before overhead (6 megabits per second Ă— 3,600 seconds Ă· 8,000 megabits per decimal GB).

Ask a VPS provider specifically about sustained outbound throughput, transfer caps, network quality, CPU capacity if encoding, and the availability of the region you want. No particular India-region provider, current price, or plan limit is established here, so compare live terms rather than assuming that a low headline monthly price is suitable.

Before streaming or archiving the playlist, make sure you hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music rights, and comply with applicable laws. YouTube’s live-streaming terms place that responsibility on the content provider.
Technical ability to loop a playlist does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and review originality and authenticity at the channel level. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible; reused-content review is separate from copyright, so permission alone does not establish originality. That does not mean every loop automatically violates policy.
Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the event is live or configured to accept the encoder, the ingestion address and stream key match that destination, and the VPS can make an outbound TLS connection on port 443. Replace a key that may have been exposed.

Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: Check actual sustained outbound throughput and transfer limits, then reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed. Do not treat the VPS port-speed headline as proof of sustained delivery.

The stream fails at a file transition: Inspect FFmpeg logs and compare the outgoing and incoming files’ video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts. Normalize incompatible files or use a playlist process that handles the transition explicitly.

There is video but no audio, or the reverse: Check that the selected inputs contain the expected streams and that the output maps and encodes both audio and video in formats YouTube accepts. Test with representative media, not just a silent or static sample.

The process stops after running for a while: Inspect service logs for process exit, disk-space exhaustion, resource limits, and network errors. Use a supervisor with logging and a restart policy, then verify that it resumes the playlist and YouTube accepts the recovered feed.

Playback stutters despite a connected encoder: Check stream-health messages, CPU load if encoding, and the actual network route. Lower the output demand or choose a less intensive encoding method only if the media are compatible with stream-copying.
