You can schedule a Windows task to run every day at 00:00 local time, but Task Scheduler does not rotate a playlist inside a YouTube encoder by itself. First decide whether your encoder can switch media while its YouTube stream stays connected. If it cannot, the practical alternative is to end one stream and start another, which may interrupt viewing or create a separate live event. To make the scheduled time IST midnight, set the Windows host’s time zone to India Standard Time and confirm the displayed local time before relying on the task.
What “rotate at IST midnight” means
A daily trigger controls when Windows launches an action; it does not control how an encoder handles media. There are two distinct ways to rotate a 24/7 playlist:
- Switch media within one active encoder session: the encoder changes the playlist or source while continuing to send the same live session. This is the option to test if viewers must not see the stream end. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains starting and stopping output, but does not establish a universal way to swap media mid-session. Support depends on the encoder and the particular switching method.
- End one stream and start another: a scheduled action stops the current output and launches a new one. Viewers may see an interruption, and YouTube may treat the restart as a separate live event. Test the resulting event and archive behavior in your own channel before relying on it.
The steps below configure the midnight trigger and the task that launches your chosen action. The action itself must use a feature or command supported by your encoder; there is no encoder-independent playlist-rotation command to paste into Task Scheduler.
Set the Windows computer to IST
- On the Windows host that will run the encoder, set the system time zone to India Standard Time.
- Check the clock shown by Windows against the intended IST midnight. The scheduled trigger uses the computer’s local time; the documented
schtasksoptions do not provide a separate time-zone field for scheduling an IST trigger on a host set to another zone. - Keep the host’s clock and time-zone configuration consistent. If you change the time zone later, recheck the next trigger time rather than assuming the task still runs at the intended IST midnight.
Choose and test the encoder’s rotation action
For a continuous encoder session
- Check the documentation for your specific encoder for a supported playlist, media-source, or scene transition that works while the encoder remains connected to YouTube.
- Test the transition manually with the encoder running. Confirm that the intended video and audio appear in YouTube Live Control Room’s preview after the switch.
- Only schedule the transition after confirming how that encoder exposes it to automation. Task Scheduler can launch a program or script, but the encoder must provide the control mechanism that actually changes the media.
For a stop-and-restart rotation
- Decide what should happen to the current YouTube live event when the first playlist ends: stop output and end the event, or use an encoder-supported procedure to start another event.
- Use the encoder’s documented controls or automation support to implement the stop and start actions. Do not assume that starting a second encoder process will safely stop the first or reuse its live event.
- Run a full manual rehearsal. Observe the event in Live Control Room, check that the next video and audio are correct, and confirm whether the restart appears as the same event or a new one.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe starting the encoder to go live and stopping output to end a stream. They do not establish whether a particular encoder’s restart or source-switch procedure preserves event continuity. Treat that result as encoder-specific and verify it on your channel.

Configure the daily Windows Task Scheduler trigger
Using the Task Scheduler interface
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task for the Windows account that will run the encoder or automation script.
- Add a daily trigger with a start time of
00:00. Because the trigger follows the host’s local clock, this means IST midnight only when Windows is configured to India Standard Time. - Add an action that launches the correct executable or script, with the arguments and working context required by your encoder. The action should perform the tested rotation method, not merely open Task Scheduler or start an unrelated media file.
- Review which account and session the task uses. Some tasks can be configured as interactive-only and run only while that user is logged on. Do not assume a graphical encoder will work in an unattended session; test the actual account and session setup.
- Save the task, run the action manually once, and verify the result in the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room before leaving it to the midnight schedule.
Using schtasks
Microsoft documents /sc daily for a daily schedule and /st for a start time in 24-hour HH:mm format. For example, replace the path with a script that you have already tested and that performs your encoder-specific action:
schtasks /create /tn "Midnight playlist rotation" /tr "C:Pathrotate.cmd" /sc daily /st 00:00

This registers a daily task at 00:00 local time. It does not create the script, supply encoder arguments, switch the playlist, or guarantee that a graphical application will work while the user is logged out. Confirm the task’s account and session behavior separately.
Connect the encoder to YouTube safely
- In your encoder, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from your channel’s live-stream setup.
- Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A custom key can be reused; if you reset it in Live Control Room, update the encoder configuration before the next scheduled run.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room and check picture and sound after the scheduled transition. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream quality rather than assuming the encoder is delivering correctly.
Protect the stream’s content and archive expectations
- Use videos you own or have the necessary rights to stream. Scheduling a rotation does not grant permission to broadcast music, footage, or other protected material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for the specific material and channel before putting it on a continuous loop.
- A repeating playlist is not, by itself, proof that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content or monetization requirements. Do not treat the task setup or a successful live connection as a platform approval.
- YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive behavior for a continuous stream exceeding 12 hours, so do not assume a 24/7 event will produce one complete archive.
Test the midnight handoff before depending on it
- Run the rotation manually at a convenient time using the same account and Windows session the scheduled task will use.
- Check the YouTube preview for the expected video and audio before and after the handoff.
- For an in-session switch, confirm whether the live connection remains active. For a stop-and-restart method, record whether viewers experience a gap and whether YouTube creates another event.
- Check that the task action points to the correct script or executable and that the stream key remains current.
- Monitor the first scheduled midnight run. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; a task showing as launched is not proof that the encoder or stream is healthy.
Troubleshooting a missed or broken rotation
- The task runs at the wrong time: check the Windows time zone and displayed local clock. The daily schedule is local time, not a separate IST setting.
- The task starts but the media does not change: Task Scheduler may have launched the action correctly while the encoder-specific switch failed. Recheck that the tested script, executable, arguments, and working context match the scheduled action.
- The task works only when you are at the computer: verify the configured task user and session. An interactive-only task runs only while that user is logged on, and a GUI encoder may behave differently in an unattended session.
- YouTube no longer accepts the encoder connection: check the server URL and current stream key. If the key was reset in Live Control Room, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The preview is black, silent, or showing the wrong item: inspect the encoder output and playlist state, then verify the preview manually after a test transition. Do not assume a successful task launch means the intended media reached YouTube.
- The stream ends but the new event does not start: separate the stop and start steps in your encoder-specific automation and rehearse the complete sequence. YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not define a universal restart procedure.
