How to Restart FFmpeg Automatically for a Continuous Telugu Church Sermon Stream

Restarting FFmpeg, recovering a failed output, and reconnecting a dropped input are different problems. Learn how to identify the failure and choose a safe recovery path.

Use a process supervisor such as systemd to restart FFmpeg after it exits, but first determine whether the failure is the FFmpeg process, its input, or its network output. Each needs a different recovery method: a supervisor relaunches a stopped process, while FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry certain output errors and input reconnection depends on the source protocol. The right setup for a Telugu church sermon stream therefore depends on its operating system, source, destination, and installed FFmpeg version.

Identify what stopped working

Before changing a command or service, check logs and process status. A process that has exited cannot recover its own connection; a process that remains alive may need output-side recovery; and a disconnected camera or media source requires input-side handling.

  • FFmpeg exited: configure the operating system’s service manager to launch it again.
  • FFmpeg is running, but the output connection failed: consider FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer recovery options, subject to the destination protocol and error type.
  • The input source dropped: use reconnection behavior appropriate to that input protocol, or make FFmpeg exit on a detected failure so a supervisor can restart it.

These approaches address different failure locations. FIFO output recovery does not, by itself, reconnect a failed input. A supervisor cannot fix invalid credentials, a missing camera, or a broken configuration; it will only repeat the launch attempt.

Check your FFmpeg build and stream details

Confirm the local version and options

Run ffmpeg -version on the machine that will run the stream. Then consult that installation’s local FFmpeg and format documentation for the options it supports. The online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated from the newest revision, so its options may not match an older installed build. See the FFmpeg documentation landing page and the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Record the details needed to choose recovery

  • Operating system and service manager, if any.
  • Input type and protocol—for example, a local capture device, RTSP camera, or HTTP stream.
  • Output destination and its current ingest protocol and requirements.
  • Whether FFmpeg exits, remains running with a stalled output, or loses its input.
  • The relevant error messages and whether failures are temporary or persistent.

The title alone does not identify these details, so no universal command or service file can safely be assumed. Keep the destination URL and stream key in protected configuration rather than publishing them in a script, log, or shared file.

Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd

On a Linux host that uses systemd, a service unit can relaunch FFmpeg when the process exits. A January 6, 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post describes one user’s configuration using Restart=always and RestartSec=5, alongside an input timeout that makes FFmpeg exit when an RTSP source is unreachable. This is an individual configuration report, not a tested, universal service recipe; adapt the executable path, user, command, and timeout to the local system and input.

  1. Make the FFmpeg command work in a terminal first. Confirm that the intended input and destination work, and that credentials are protected. Do not copy an ingest address or stream key from an unrelated example.
  2. Create a service unit for your installation. Put the actual command in its service configuration and set an appropriate working directory and service user. Use the systemd documentation for the host’s syntax and operational details; this article cannot supply a guaranteed unit without knowing the machine and stream protocols.
  3. Set a restart policy and a sensible delay. A delay such as the one described in the mailing-list post can prevent an immediate restart loop, but the suitable interval depends on the failure and host. A restart policy is not a fix for a persistent error.
  4. Enable and start the service using your system’s procedures. Confirm the service is active, then inspect its status and logs. Service-manager commands and unit-reload steps vary with the host’s configuration.
  5. Test a controlled interruption. In a safe test window, interrupt the input and separately test an output interruption. Check whether the expected layer recovers, whether viewers see the stream return, and whether the logs reveal repeated failures.

A mailing-list discussion from January 6, 2025 describes RTSP timeout behavior used with an external systemd restart. It supports the distinction between detecting an input failure and relaunching the process, not a claim that a particular timeout works for every RTSP camera. See the FFmpeg-user RTSP reconnection discussion.

Recover a failed output without restarting FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer documents output-side recovery options including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and max_recovery_attempts. They apply when FFmpeg is still running but its output encounters a recoverable error. They are not a universal reconnect switch: the documentation says some error classes are not retried by default, and recover_any_error can broaden which errors are retried. Broader retries may also retry failures that will not resolve on their own, so choose settings for the actual destination and installed version.

Check the local format documentation for the precise FIFO syntax and compatibility, then test an output interruption independently of an input interruption. If FFmpeg exits instead, a supervisor is the relevant recovery layer. For an overview of the documented options and limitations, see FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Handle input reconnection by protocol

Input reconnection options depend on the protocol and FFmpeg build. A January 31, 2025 FFmpeg-user discussion covers reconnect settings for an HTTP input; those settings should not be generalized to RTSP, capture devices, or other sources. See the HTTP live-input reconnection discussion.

For an input that cannot reconnect reliably in-process, one possible design is to configure a suitable timeout or failure condition so FFmpeg exits, then let the service manager relaunch it. The timeout and behavior must be verified against the actual input and local build. If the input has simply disappeared or its credentials or address are wrong, repeated process restarts will not restore it.

Test recovery and troubleshoot failures

Plan separate tests for input loss and output loss, preferably when a brief interruption will not disrupt a service. Observe the process, destination, service status, and logs. Confirm that stream credentials are not printed in logs or committed to version control.

FFmpeg exits and stays stopped No supervisor is configured, or the service is not enabled or active. Inspect service status and logs, then verify the service’s restart policy and launch command.
FFmpeg restarts repeatedly The underlying input, output, credentials, or configuration problem may still be present; the retry delay may also be too short. Read the first failure in the logs, verify the source and destination details, and use a deliberate retry delay.
FFmpeg stays running, but viewers lose the stream The output may have failed without terminating the process. Check output logs and destination requirements; determine whether FIFO recovery is applicable to the local build and error.
The stream does not return after an input drop Input reconnect behavior may not support that protocol or failure, or FFmpeg may not exit for the supervisor to restart. Check protocol-specific options and timeout behavior; test the chosen failure path separately.
The configuration works on one machine but not another FFmpeg versions, build options, paths, service managers, or protocols may differ. Compare local versions and documentation, then verify the executable path and supported options.

Keep the YouTube sermon stream compliant

Automatic recovery only restores a technical connection; it does not grant permission to rebroadcast material. Before using recorded sermons, music, video, or other material, confirm that the church has the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s current policies. Repeatedly streaming the same recording does not remove copyright or other policy obligations.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded sermon recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
