If OBS is still open but its connection drops, enable OBS’s Automatically Reconnect output option. If OBS itself crashes or exits, that option cannot restart it: you need an external process supervisor or scheduled mechanism to relaunch OBS with its --startstreaming launch parameter. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings affect what happens to a broadcast when an encoder connects or disconnects; they do not relaunch OBS.
First identify what stopped
“The stream crashed” can mean two different failures, and each needs a different recovery layer:
| Failure | Recovery path | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS remains open, but its streaming connection drops | OBS output auto-reconnect retries the connection according to its retry settings. | It cannot recover a process that has exited. [OBS Project, OBS Studio Output API reference] |
| The OBS process crashes or exits | An external supervisor detects the exit and launches OBS again. The --startstreaming parameter requests streaming at startup. |
Relaunching does not repair the cause of the crash or guarantee that YouTube accepts the new connection. [OBS Project, Launch Parameters] |
Decide which case you have before configuring recovery. A computer restart, power loss, network outage, invalid stream key, and OBS process crash are different failure points; no single OBS reconnect setting addresses all of them.
Reconnect OBS after a connection drop
- In OBS, open the settings for the streaming output and enable Automatically Reconnect. The exact menu location can vary by release, so confirm the setting in the version you use.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum retry count that suit your connection and operating needs. OBS’s output API specifies that a retry count of zero disables reconnect; it also specifies that the retry time doubles after each retry. [OBS Project, OBS Studio Output API reference]
- Save the settings, then test a brief connection interruption while OBS remains open. Check that OBS retries and that YouTube receives the encoder input again.
This is for a dropped output connection while OBS is still running. It is not a watchdog for the OBS application.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Relaunch OBS after the process crashes
For a process crash, use an operating-system scheduler or process-monitoring service to detect that OBS has exited and launch it again. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, as well as parameters for selecting a profile and scene collection. Its launch-parameters guidance does not provide a complete watchdog recipe, and the exact setup depends on the operating system and how OBS is run.
- Choose a supervisor. Configure a scheduled restart or process monitor to start OBS when the process is no longer running. Use a delay and a limit or alert for repeated failures rather than allowing rapid, unlimited restarts.
- Set the launch behavior. Include
--startstreamingso a relaunch requests streaming. If the loop depends on a particular profile or scene collection, use OBS’s documented--profileand--collectionlaunch parameters to select them. - Set the working directory on Windows. OBS’s launch-parameters guidance says that a scheduled or automated Windows launch should use the folder containing
obs64.exeas its working directory. [OBS Project, Launch Parameters, 2021-05-30] - Use the right account and session. Test the supervisor in the same user and desktop-session context in which it will run unattended. A process started outside the expected interactive session may not behave like OBS launched manually.
- Verify the whole chain. Confirm that OBS opens with the expected scene and sources, begins sending the encoder feed, and that YouTube shows the expected input health and broadcast state.
OBS documents launch parameters, not a universal monitoring configuration. Consult the documentation for your chosen operating-system scheduler or supervisor for its exact detection, delay, and launch fields; those steps differ across systems.

Check YouTube’s broadcast settings
In YouTube Live, review the stream key and the Auto-start and Auto-stop options for the specific stream. An encoder uses the stream URL and key to send its feed. Auto-start and Auto-stop influence broadcast lifecycle behavior, but do not start a crashed OBS process. YouTube also notes that reusing stream settings copies the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections, so check those options when reusing settings. [YouTube Help, Manage live stream settings]
Do not assume every broadcast will remain resumable after every outage or for a fixed length of time. The outcome depends on the stream and its configuration; the documented controls are not a guarantee that YouTube will accept or resume every reconnection.

Test before leaving a loop unattended
- Run a short test using the same OBS profile, scene collection, media, stream key, and supervisor context intended for the real loop.
- Test a connection interruption with OBS still open, then separately test the process-relaunch path. Verify the resulting OBS and YouTube states for each case.
- Use representative audio and motion, choose encoder quality that the available connection can reliably sustain, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during an event; its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. [YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
- OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings for a few minutes. Do that before depending on an unattended loop. [OBS Project, Quick Start Guide, 2021-08-25]
A successful test shows that the configured recovery path worked under those test conditions; it does not establish uninterrupted service under every future failure.
Common recovery problems
- OBS does not come back after a crash: Automatically Reconnect handles an output interruption, not an exited process. Check that the external supervisor monitors OBS and launches it with the intended parameters.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Confirm that
--startstreamingis included and that the supervisor is launching the expected OBS installation, profile, and scene collection. - OBS starts in the wrong context or cannot access expected sources: Check the account/session used by the supervisor and, on Windows, set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - YouTube receives input but the broadcast state is unexpected: Review the specific stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings and the stream key configuration. These choices govern broadcast behavior, not OBS process recovery.
- OBS repeatedly crashes and restarts: A supervisor cannot fix a persistent crash cause. Add a restart delay, a restart limit or notification, and a manual recovery procedure rather than allowing a rapid restart loop.
- Nothing reconnects after a machine, power, or network outage: A process supervisor cannot restore a powered-off machine or unavailable connection. It also cannot fix an invalidated stream key or broken media source. Check the underlying failure before treating relaunch automation as recovery.
