In OBS Studio, enable Automatic Reconnect in the Advanced settings and set a retry count and wait interval. This makes OBS attempt to reconnect to YouTube after a connection drop; it does not guarantee that every interruption will resume the live event in exactly the same state. YouTube’s separate auto-start and auto-stop controls do not perform those retries.
Enable automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings, then Advanced, and find the automatic reconnect controls. OBS’s interface and defaults can vary by version.
- Turn on Automatic Reconnect. Choose a maximum retry count and a starting retry delay that make sense for your stream and likely outages. OBS’s output API describes supported outputs as retrying with a starting wait that doubles on later attempts. The actual behavior depends on the output and connection; there is no universal recovery time or guaranteed result.
- Check the YouTube destination. Confirm OBS is configured with the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube treats the key like a password: keep it private, and reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed, then update OBS with the replacement.
- Save the settings and test the full setup. Start a test stream before relying on the configuration. Confirm that YouTube shows a preview and check stream health in Live Control Room.
OBS documents automatic reconnect in its OBS Studio Overview Guide. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide explains that reconnect attempts cannot fix an ongoing network problem.
Understand what YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop do
YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let you start or stop a stream from the encoder. They are not the encoder’s retry mechanism after a dropped connection. Use OBS automatic reconnect for connection retries; treat YouTube start/stop controls as separate event controls. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance.
Test recovery before a scheduled stream
- Configure the encoder and stream settings ahead of time, then send a test stream.
- Verify that the stream preview appears in Live Control Room and monitor the stream-health indicator.
- If you plan to use a backup encoder, test the switchover rather than assuming it will happen correctly. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player moves to the backup encoder.
YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips cover encoder preparation and backup-encoder testing. A backup encoder is a separate continuity plan: it is not another name for OBS’s automatic reconnect option, and it requires a second encoder and a verified switchover.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If OBS does not reconnect, troubleshoot the connection
Automatic retries help when a connection drop is temporary. If the underlying problem continues, the encoder may keep failing to reach YouTube. Work through the likely causes before changing equipment.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the upload capacity available while the stream is running. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce that capacity.
- YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total streaming bitrate. This is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.
- If capacity is tight or fluctuating, reduce the stream bitrate and test again. OBS identifies bitrate that is too high for the available connection as a possible cause of dropped frames and interruptions.
See YouTube’s Streaming tips for its bandwidth guidance.

Check Wi-Fi and network equipment
- If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Check whether the modem, router, Ethernet cable or other network hardware is faulty. Replace or reconfigure equipment only when testing points to a fault.
- Check for intermittent service from the internet provider and reduce competing network use during the stream.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide discusses unstable connections and possible faulty networking hardware. A cable can help provide a wired connection or replace a confirmed bad cable; it does not itself restart a stream.
Choose the right kind of resilience
| Approach | What it addresses | What it requires or cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries the encoder connection after a drop. | It cannot repair a persistent ISP, capacity, Wi-Fi or equipment fault; recovery is not guaranteed. |
| Network troubleshooting | Addresses the underlying cause, such as insufficient upload capacity or unstable Wi-Fi. | Requires diagnosis; reconnect settings alone do not resolve the fault. |
| Backup encoder failover | Provides a separate stream source if the primary fails and the switchover works. | Requires a second encoder and advance testing. |
| YouTube auto-start/auto-stop | Controls starting or stopping a stream from the encoder. | It is not documented as an encoder reconnect retry feature. |
Set the correct audience for a kids’ stream
“Kids’ stream” does not by itself establish whether a video or live stream should be marked Made for Kids. Select the audience designation that accurately applies to the content. YouTube says Made for Kids live streams have features such as live chat and reminder notifications disabled, and other features may be restricted. These audience rules are separate from reconnect settings; check YouTube’s current Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming guidance.
