Run your GStreamer pipeline in the foreground as a systemd service and configure a failure restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. This restarts the process when it exits unsuccessfully; it does not guarantee recovery when a GStreamer pipeline stops handling media but the process stays alive. For that case, the application must detect the failure and recover or exit.
1. Verify the GStreamer pipeline before adding systemd
First run the exact command manually under the same user account, environment, working directory, and plugin setup that the service will use. Confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video. gst-launch-1.0 is useful for building and checking a pipeline, but GStreamer documents it primarily as a debugging tool and recommends using the GStreamer API in applications. GStreamer: gst-launch-1.0
You cannot safely copy a universal, complete pipeline into a service: the right elements and settings depend on your media source, codecs, installed plugins, machine, and account-specific YouTube ingest details.
2. Create a foreground systemd service
Use the service to run the pipeline itself as the long-lived foreground process. Do not launch it in the background from a shell wrapper that exits; systemd would then supervise the wrapper instead of the streaming process.

This is a template, not a verified unit for a particular host. Replace the user, directory, executable path, and pipeline with values appropriate to your system. Check directive and option details against the manual installed for your systemd version and distribution. Do not add Restart=always without considering that it may restart the service after an intentional clean stop.

- Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now gstreamer-youtube.service. - Inspect the service state:
sudo systemctl status gstreamer-youtube.service. - Read its logs:
sudo journalctl -u gstreamer-youtube.service.
Use the actual unit name you chose, and confirm local privilege and distribution conventions. A service shown as active only establishes process status; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
3. Use current YouTube ingest settings and protect the stream key
Get the ingest URL and stream key from your account’s YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on a copied example endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder workflows. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Select the codec and bitrate appropriate to your stream and the ingest settings shown for your broadcast. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

For reference, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation table gives 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations in YouTube’s table, not a guarantee that every source, connection, or ingest configuration should use those values. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test. Test using representative motion and audio, then watch stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not place it in a public repository, a world-readable unit file, or logs. Use a restricted environment or credential mechanism suitable for your host and systemd version. GStreamer’s rtmpsink element delivers data to an RTMP server, but its documented role does not establish that any arbitrary pipeline will match YouTube’s current account or encoder settings. 4. Understand what systemd can—and cannot—restart
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart a service process when it exits in a failure condition. It cannot restart a process that remains alive. GStreamer applications receive pipeline messages on a bus; GStreamer’s documentation recommends handling error messages and notes that media handling can stall after an error. That means a pipeline can stop producing or sending media even though the process has not exited. GStreamer: Bus
For bus errors and end-of-stream events
For more robust recovery, use an application that watches the GStreamer bus for errors and end-of-stream events. It can clean up the pipeline and either retry deliberately or exit with a nonzero status so systemd can restart it. If you use a wrapper, keep it in the foreground and make sure it forwards termination signals and propagates the child’s exit status correctly.

GStreamer’s streaming tutorial demonstrates reacting to messages and explains that live pipelines have distinct state-change behavior, including GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL. GStreamer: Streaming
For silent network stalls
Process liveness is not stream health. If a silent network stall must trigger recovery, add health monitoring that checks whether media is actually progressing or whether YouTube reports a problem. Decide what the monitor should do when health checks fail—such as asking the application to rebuild the pipeline or exit unsuccessfully—rather than relying on systemd’s process state alone.
5. Choose a recovery approach that fits the failure
| Approach | What it can recover from | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
Foreground process with Restart=on-failure |
Process exits in a failure condition. | It does not detect a stalled pipeline if the process remains alive. |
| GStreamer application handling bus messages | Can respond to pipeline errors or end-of-stream events by retrying or exiting unsuccessfully. | Recovery behavior depends on the application; it does not automatically prove YouTube is receiving media. |
| Application plus stream-health monitoring | Can act on the unhealthy conditions the monitor checks. | Monitoring must be configured to observe meaningful stream health, not just process existence. |
Whichever approach you choose, use a restart delay and check the installed systemd documentation for any start limiting you configure. A delay can prevent immediate repeated restarts, but it does not repair a bad pipeline, invalid stream key, or incompatible encoder configuration.
6. Troubleshoot common restart and stream failures
- The service does not start: Check
systemctl statusandjournalctl -ufor the actual error. Confirm the executable path, unit syntax, user permissions, working directory, and plugin availability. Re-run the same command manually as the service user. - The service starts, then exits repeatedly: Inspect the journal and validate the pipeline and current YouTube ingest details. A restart policy repeats a failed launch; it does not correct its cause.
- systemd reports the service active, but the stream is missing or frozen: The process may still be alive while media handling has stalled. Inspect GStreamer bus errors and YouTube stream health; add application-level recovery or health monitoring if needed.
- YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health: Check the selected ingest settings, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and connection using representative audio and motion. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance and its suggested upload-speed test rather than assuming the process being active means the connection is adequate.
- The unit works manually but not as a service: Compare the service’s user, environment, working directory, executable path, and plugin setup with the successful manual run.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Remove it from public files and logs, restrict access to its storage, and replace it through YouTube if it is no longer private.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without maintaining a GStreamer host, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
