How to Restart a Continuous Children’s YouTube Livestream as a New Broadcast

End the current stream in YouTube Studio, create a new broadcast, and use Reuse settings to carry over its setup—then verify the children’s audience, stream key, and automation choices.

To restart a continuous children’s YouTube livestream as a distinct broadcast, end the current stream in YouTube Studio, create or schedule a new stream, and select Reuse settings if you want to carry over its setup. Then check the copied details and start the encoder for the new broadcast. Reusing settings creates a new stream; it does not simply extend the old one.

End the current stream and create a new one

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Manage tab to locate the current or previous stream.
  2. End the current broadcast when its segment is complete. Stop sending content from the encoder; for a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions also say to select End Stream.
  3. Create a new stream or schedule one. To carry over the earlier setup, select the previous stream and choose Reuse settings. YouTube says this copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key; you can edit them after creation. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains the option.
  4. Review the new broadcast’s title, description, audience designation, visibility, schedule, and automation settings. Change any values that do not fit this broadcast.
  5. Connect the encoder using the stream URL and key associated with the new broadcast, then start it. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready.
  6. Check that the new watch page is accessible and monitor the audio and video. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and monitoring stream quality.

Reuse settings or start from scratch?

Choice What carries over What to do next
Reuse settings Previous metadata, settings, and stream key; auto-start and auto-stop choices also copy. Review every copied value, especially the audience, visibility, schedule, and automation behavior.
Create from scratch No previous stream setup is reused. Enter and check the new broadcast’s details and settings yourself.

A stream key is the credential and destination information your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. Reusing the prior key is convenient when intended, but confirm that the encoder is using the key for the new broadcast. You can use a custom key when you deliberately need the same key. If a key is compromised, reset it and update the encoder with the replacement. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings.

Set the children’s audience and participant safeguards correctly

Choose the audience designation that accurately describes the content. If a livestream is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled for made-for-kids livestreams and Premieres, although contextual ads may still be shown. Do not plan audience interaction around features that this designation disables. Read YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.

The audience designation is separate from rules about children appearing in a broadcast. YouTube says that under-16s participating from an adult-owned account must have the adult visibly present. A livestream featuring under-16s without a visibly accompanying adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. YouTube also recommends an adult nearby or aware and safe chat moderation for minors’ livestreams.

Plan broadcast length, archives, and DVR

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Dividing a long-running schedule into separate broadcasts can therefore help when you want distinct watch pages and archives. The under-12-hour statement is not a guarantee about what will happen to every longer stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe its archiving guidance.

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek back to before the stream began. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast, though a recording can still be available after it ends. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Prepare the encoder for a scheduled restart

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least 2 hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not prerequisites for creating a new broadcast. Hardware encoding is not required for this workflow; YouTube also supports software encoding. For higher-production-value events, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders. Details are in YouTube’s live-streaming tips and streaming tips.

Troubleshoot a restart that does not go live

  • The encoder feed appears on the wrong broadcast: Check the stream URL and key against the new stream in Live Control Room. Reusing settings copies the previous key, but an encoder may still be configured for a different stream.
  • The new stream is not visible to viewers: Confirm the broadcast’s privacy and schedule settings, check that the encoder feed is reaching the new stream, and complete the scheduled-stream preview and Go live step.
  • The stream starts or stops unexpectedly: Review the copied auto-start and auto-stop choices. Adjust them to match the intended boundary between broadcasts.
  • Chat, comments, reminders, or Super Chat are unavailable: Check whether the stream is designated made for kids; YouTube disables several of these features for that designation.
  • The old stream continues instead of producing a separate broadcast: End the existing stream, then create a new stream object in Studio. Reusing settings is part of creating that new object, not a way to rename or extend the current broadcast.
  • The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the key in the encoder before streaming again.
