To restart OBS after a crash, use an external process supervisor configured to relaunch OBS with the correct profile and scene. OBS’s built-in reconnect behavior handles a lost connection while OBS is still running; it cannot restart a process that has exited. After relaunch, check YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming the encoder has rejoined the same live event.
Three different failures need three different recovery mechanisms
- OBS process crash: OBS has stopped running. An external supervisor must detect the exit and launch OBS again.
- Network or ingest interruption: OBS is still running but has lost its connection to YouTube. OBS connection-recovery settings may help; see OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Primary encoder outage with a backup available: A separate encoder may provide a failover path. It is a continuity arrangement, not a tool that relaunches the crashed OBS process.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder startup, stream keys, output, CPU load, and connection problems, but none of these in-process or backup mechanisms should be mistaken for a supervisor that restarts a dead OBS process. See YouTube stream troubleshooting.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before enabling automatic restarts
Keep the stream configuration available
Make sure the relaunch uses the intended OBS profile, scene, media source or playlist, and encoder settings. Confirm the correct YouTube stream key is available to the restarted encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as the information that directs the encoder’s feed to the stream and supports reusing stream settings; see Manage live stream settings.
Treat the stream key like a credential. Do not expose it in shared scripts, logs, screenshots, or support posts. If you believe it has been exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder configuration that uses it.

Check the 4K60 output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). At 4K/2160p and 60 fps, its listed recommended bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264; listed minimums are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance when configuring the encoder.
Configure a supervisor to relaunch OBS
Use a process supervisor available for your operating system—such as a task scheduler, service manager, or other process-monitoring tool—to start OBS and relaunch it if the process exits unexpectedly. The exact setup depends on your OS, OBS installation, logged-in user session, and how the stream is configured; there is no single verified Windows, macOS, or Linux recipe that applies to every setup.

- Choose the launch context. Confirm whether OBS needs an interactive desktop session to access its media, scenes, or plugins. Configure the supervisor to run as the appropriate user, not an unrelated system account.
- Set the launch target. Point the supervisor to the installed OBS executable and, if your setup requires them, the correct profile, scene collection, or startup arguments. Check the OBS documentation for the options supported by your installed version rather than copying unverified arguments.
- Set restart behavior. Configure the supervisor to relaunch OBS after an unexpected exit. If it supports limits or delays for repeated failures, use them to prevent a rapid restart loop while you diagnose a persistent problem.
- Make the stream state reproducible. Confirm OBS opens the intended scene and media source and has the right stream key and output settings. A process opening successfully does not prove it has begun sending the intended feed.
- Test an actual process crash. On a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate, verify that the supervisor detects OBS exiting, relaunches it, and that the restarted encoder reaches YouTube. Watch the event in Live Control Room and check its stream health.
Do not assume that relaunching OBS automatically resumes the same YouTube event or creates a seamless continuation. YouTube’s available guidance does not guarantee that outcome for every setup. Confirm the event status and returned feed in Live Control Room after testing.
When a separate backup encoder is worth considering
If an interruption from a failed computer or encoder is unacceptable, consider a separate backup encoder as a distinct continuity measure. It does not restart OBS, and simply installing or configuring a second encoder does not establish that rollover will work. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming playback rolls over. Troubleshoot the restart by layer
