To stream a 4K video at 1080p, set the output to 1920×1080, preserve the source’s aspect ratio, and use YouTube Live encoder settings suited to your codec and frame rate. OBS can do this through its output-scaling controls; FFmpeg can do it with its scale filter. Then test the complete stream with representative motion and audio and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What resizing changes—and what it does not
Resizing is an output step: the 4K file remains your source, while the encoder scales the outgoing picture to 1920×1080. YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers on different devices and connections, so the ingest resolution is not necessarily the resolution every viewer receives. Resizing alone does not configure a loop or establish that a channel or video is eligible for continuous streaming.
Check the source before choosing settings
Confirm the video’s dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, and audio before setting up the output. Use a frame rate that matches the source where practical; if you choose 60 fps, check that the encoder and computer can sustain it. YouTube recommends testing in advance with motion and audio similar to the intended stream.
Choose how to handle aspect ratio
A 16:9 4K source scales to 1920×1080 without changing its shape. If the source has a different aspect ratio, do not stretch it to fill the 16:9 canvas: that distorts the image. To keep the whole picture, scale it to fit and leave space around it or add padding. To fill the canvas, crop some of the image. Choose based on whether preserving all the frame or filling the screen matters more.

Resize to 1080p in OBS
- Open Settings > Video in OBS.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. OBS applies the selected downscale filter to the output used for streaming or recording.
- Choose an output frame rate aligned with the source or intended stream. OBS cautions that 60 fps can tax the system more than 30 fps; test performance before going live.
- Review the preview for distortion or unwanted cropping, particularly if the source is not 16:9. The separate Scaling/Aspect Ratio source filter changes an individual source’s scaling behavior; it is not a substitute for setting the overall output resolution.
Filter and encoding choices affect the result, and no single scaling method is guaranteed to be best for every source. Inspect the output using footage with the kinds of movement and detail present in the full video.
Resize with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s scale filter can constrain output dimensions while preserving the input’s aspect ratio. For a 16:9 4K source, scaling to 1920×1080 halves both dimensions. For a source with another aspect ratio, preserve the proportions and decide whether to pad or crop to make a 1920×1080 canvas. Do not force both dimensions independently if that would stretch the picture.

There is no universal loop-and-stream command that fits every file: the correct command depends on the input’s audio, container, codec, frame rate, and the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. The scaling filter handles resizing, but it does not by itself configure a reliable continuous broadcast. Keep your stream key private; never publish it in a command, screenshot, or other example.
Choose YouTube Live ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, specifies CBR (constant bitrate) encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—no longer than four seconds. The bitrate figures below are ingest recommendations, not a promise about the bitrate YouTube delivers to each viewer.

| Output | H.264 recommended ingest bitrate | AV1/H.265 displayed range |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 4–10 Mbps |
These are the values shown in YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The AV1/H.265 ranges are distinct from the H.264 recommendations; do not apply one codec’s figures to another. Select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain with headroom, and verify the codec-specific guidance before streaming because platform recommendations can change.
Set up and verify the loop
Scaling and looping are separate jobs. Configure the playback or encoder workflow you use to repeat the video, then send its output to YouTube Live. The exact loop controls depend on that workflow and the media file, so verify them in the documentation for the player or encoder you choose rather than assuming the scale setting repeats playback.

- Run a test using the intended output resolution, codec, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Include representative movement and audio; check that the picture is not stretched or unexpectedly cropped and that sound plays as intended.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and the live event. If the connection cannot sustain the selected upload bitrate, lower the setting to a reliable value and test again.
- Confirm that the stream actually returns to the start of the video when it reaches the end. A successful 1080p output does not prove that looping is configured.
Common problems and fixes
- The picture looks stretched: the source and output aspect ratios differ. Preserve the proportions, then pad or crop rather than forcing the image to fill 1920×1080.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health problems: the upload may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Test with connection headroom and reduce the bitrate if necessary.
- 1080p60 drops frames or strains the computer: 60 fps can require more system resources in OBS than 30 fps. Test the full workflow and use 30 fps if it is the sustainable choice for the source and setup.
- The stream is 1080p but does not repeat: output scaling does not control playback order. Check the loop setting in the player or encoder workflow.
- The stream key is exposed: treat it as a credential. Do not share it; replace or reset it through YouTube if it has been disclosed.
Rights and channel eligibility still matter
Encoder settings cannot determine whether you have the rights to stream the video or whether your channel qualifies for the intended continuous live stream. Check the rights for all video and audio and the applicable YouTube rules for your account and content before going live. YouTube’s encoding guidance does not settle those questions.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
