You can replace or remove claimed audio from an archived YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio without uploading the video again. Open the archive’s copyright details, choose Take action, then select Replace song, Erase song, or Trim out segment. Back up the video before saving: since June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone with Revert to original.
Before you edit: make sure the livestream archive exists
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours long. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If the archive is missing, there is no archived video to edit in Studio. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
For an archived livestream, a Content ID claim is generally made after the broadcast ends if you choose to archive it. That post-stream process is separate from YouTube’s live copyright scanning, which can interrupt a broadcast while it is in progress. Details are in YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Back up the archive before saving an edit
Download a copy of the video or use Google Takeout before editing. YouTube says that, since June 2025, saved changes in Studio Editor cannot be undone using Revert to original. Treat the edit as permanent: preview the result carefully before saving.

Open the claim in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and find the livestream archive.
- Open the video’s copyright notice, then select View details.
- For the relevant claim, open Take action.
- Choose the edit that best preserves the parts of the archive you want to keep.
YouTube’s current documented options are Replace song, Erase song, and Trim out segment. The labels and available options may change, so follow the choices displayed for the claim. The full claimed audio must be addressed for the claim to clear: replacement audio must cover the entire claimed segment, and muting or trimming must cover the affected interval. See YouTube’s instructions for removing copyright-claimed content.
Choose the least destructive edit that solves the claim
| Studio option | What it changes | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace song | Uses a selected track from the YouTube Audio Library in place of claimed music. | You want to keep the picture and retain background music. | The replacement must cover the entire claimed audio interval, and the available track may not suit the program. |
| Erase song | Attempts to mute the claimed song while preserving other sound, such as dialogue or effects. | You want to keep non-claimed audio in the segment. | The tool may not be able to separate and remove a difficult-to-isolate song. |
| Mute all sound in claimed segments | Mutes all audio in the affected interval. | Selective erasure has failed, or clearing the claim matters more than preserving the segment’s sound. | Speech, music, effects, and other audio in that interval are lost. YouTube says this option is usually faster and more likely to clear the claim. |
| Trim out segment | Removes the selected interval’s picture and audio. | The claimed interval can be cut without undermining the archive. | You lose the entire selected section, not just its audio. |

Replace the song with Audio Library music
- Choose Replace song under the claim’s Take action menu.
- Select a replacement from the YouTube Audio Library and preview it.
- Position and size the replacement so it spans the full claimed section.
- Preview the edited passage to check the music, timing, and transitions before saving.
If any of the claimed audio remains uncovered, the claim may not be released.
Try erasing the song, or mute all sound
Choose Erase song when you want YouTube to attempt to remove only the claimed music while preserving speech and effects. The operation can fail if the music is difficult to separate. If that happens, muting all sound in the claimed segment is a more thorough alternative, but it also removes dialogue and every other sound in that interval.

Trim the claimed interval
Choose Trim out segment if removing the complete passage is acceptable. Check the start and end points so no claimed audio is left behind; the selected video picture is removed along with its sound.
Preview, save, and verify the claim status
- Preview the edited passage. Check the boundaries and listen for remaining claimed audio; confirm that essential dialogue or program sound has not been lost unintentionally.
- Save only when the result is acceptable, keeping in mind that Studio Editor’s saved changes cannot be undone through Revert to original.
- Wait for processing to finish. Studio shows processing status and an estimate; the duration varies, and you cannot make other edits to the video while this edit is processing.
- When processing is complete, reload the page. Confirm that the edit appears in the archive and that the copyright claim is gone.
If the claim remains, review the claimed interval and the saved edit. YouTube says the claimed audio must be fully removed or replaced for the claim to clear; an incomplete replacement or a trim that leaves claimed audio can leave the claim in place.

If you believe the claim is wrong, consider disputing it
A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. A claim can block, monetize, or track a video, and its effect may differ by territory. If you believe the claim is incorrect and are confident you hold the necessary rights, YouTube provides a dispute process. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes; review its explanation of copyright claims before deciding whether to dispute or edit the archive.
If you used licensed music, check that the license covers the archived livestream and the relevant rights and territories. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights, including music rights, on the content provider.
