First determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows as the video plays. A steady offset can usually be corrected by shifting the audio; growing drift needs a timing-rate or timestamp correction. Measure more than one point, correct a copy of the file, and verify it through the playlist-streaming workflow before broadcasting.
Tell a fixed offset from growing drift
Find an event that is both visible and audible, such as a clap, a door closing, or an impact. Compare the audio and video at that event near the start, then repeat at one or more later points.
- About the same gap throughout: the audio has a constant offset. Shifting it by a measured amount may align the file.
- The gap gets larger or smaller over time: the audio and video are running at different effective rates, or timestamps are being handled incorrectly. A single shift cannot align the whole file.
- The problem appears only in one editor or player: check how that software handles variable-frame-rate (VFR) timestamps. Correctly timestamped VFR video can remain in sync, while software that mishandles those timestamps may display it incorrectly.
Do not infer content sync from stream start-time metadata alone. FFprobe’s stream start_time describes stream timing; it does not reveal an offset already embedded in the recorded audio and video.
Prepare and measure a working copy
- Preserve the original. Make a separate working copy before editing or transcoding. Note the file and tool versions so you can reproduce or undo the correction.
- Choose sync landmarks. Use clear visible-and-audible events near the beginning and at later points. Record whether audio leads or trails video and estimate the gap at each point.
- Classify the error. If the measured gap stays roughly stable, treat it as an offset. If it changes across the duration, treat it as drift and estimate the rate correction from measurements spanning the file.
- Apply the smallest correction that fits. Shift a stable offset. For drift, investigate the source’s sample-rate or timestamp behavior and correct the rate or timestamps as appropriate; do not guess a constant delay.
- Check the corrected copy. Revisit the same landmarks near the start, middle, and end. Listen through transitions and the loop point if the clip repeats.
- Test the actual stream path. Preview representative corrected material through the workflow you intend to use. A local player check cannot establish how every playlist tool or live-stream configuration will handle the file.
Choose a correction that matches the cause
| Symptom or cause | Suitable direction | Trade-off and verification |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is consistently early or late | Shift it by the measured offset. | This corrects a stable displacement, not a gap that changes over time. |
| Audio increasingly leads or trails | Correct the rate or timestamp behavior using measurements across the file. | Audio filtering may re-encode audio. Check the output at multiple points. |
| Drift appears only in software that mishandles VFR timestamps | Consider a constant-frame-rate (CFR) copy as a case-specific workaround. | This can require re-encoding video and audio. Confirm that the new copy stays in sync in the target workflow. |
| Tracks drift in a recording or capture setup | Check the application, operating system, and device sample rates, device consistency, and drivers. | A one-time latency adjustment cannot align tracks that run at different rates. |
Use Audacity for recording-rate problems
Audacity’s recording troubleshooting guidance distinguishes latency from rate mismatch. Its manual explains that if a newly recorded track runs at a different speed, it progressively drifts from the other tracks, so latency correction will not synchronize it along its entire length. Check that the application, operating system, and sound device use compatible sample-rate settings and investigate device or driver issues.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a track that is merely misaligned in a project, Audacity’s manual describes dragging the overdub track and setting latency compensation. Use that approach for a stable placement problem, not as a remedy for progressive drift. The manual’s warning concerns overdub recording; it is not a guarantee about YouTube playback.
Use FFmpeg only after identifying the timing problem
FFmpeg provides stream selection, timestamp handling, and filters that can help with different sync problems. The right operation depends on whether the measured issue is a stable offset, a rate mismatch, or software-specific timestamp handling. Derive any offset or rate from the actual file; an example command or a guessed value is not a universal fix. Check FFmpeg’s documentation for the option or filter that fits the source and verify the output rather than assuming a successful command means the sync is correct.

When time-stretching may help
FFmpeg’s rubberband filter supports time-stretching and pitch-shifting, but it is available only in builds configured with --enable-librubberband. If the filter is unavailable in your build, use a suitable supported method or a build that includes the required library. Recheck the corrected file at multiple points, since a rate change can alter the result and may re-encode audio.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Shifting audio when the gap grows: measure the gap at several points. If it changes, estimate and correct a rate or timestamp issue instead of applying one fixed delay.
- Using start-time metadata as a sync verdict: compare actual visible and audible events. Stream start timing does not expose an offset embedded in the content.
- Changing latency compensation to fix a rate mismatch: check sample rates and the capture chain. Latency correction addresses placement, not tracks that run at different speeds.
- Blaming VFR automatically: confirm whether the problem follows the file across players. A correctly timestamped VFR file can remain synchronized; a particular tool may be mishandling timestamps.
- Trusting one preview: check landmarks near the beginning, middle, and end, then test representative material in the intended stream workflow.
- Overwriting the only source: retain the original and make corrections on a working copy so you can compare or revert.
Keep the playlist stream running separately from file sync
Fixing a file’s timing does not itself keep a YouTube playlist stream online. If you want the stream to continue without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the corrected video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
