Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can reuse a YouTube stream key and encoder setup, but that does not guarantee that a new broadcast will keep the same audience-facing watch-page URL. If viewers need a link for a specific upcoming event, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and share that event’s URL. If you need to retain encoder credentials, configure a custom reusable stream key. These are different kinds of reuse.
First, identify which URL you need to keep
“The stream URL” can mean three different things:
- Watch-page URL: the public link viewers open to watch a scheduled event.
- Stream URL: YouTube’s ingestion address, entered in an encoder’s server or URL field.
- Stream key: the credential that lets an encoder send its feed to YouTube.
YouTube’s official guidance explains how to reuse stream keys and copy settings into another stream. It does not promise that ending an event and starting or creating another one will preserve the original event’s watch-page URL. A reusable key is not a permanent audience link.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
| What you need | Use this workflow | What it preserves |
|---|---|---|
| A shareable link for an upcoming broadcast | Schedule an event in YouTube Studio’s Manage tab and share its URL | The scheduled event destination you shared; YouTube does not document that a later, separate event inherits that URL |
| The same encoder credentials for future broadcasts | Create a custom stream key and keep it configured in your encoder | Encoder setup, not the public watch-page URL |
| Copying settings from an earlier broadcast | Use Reuse settings when creating a stream | Prior metadata, settings, and stream key; this is not documented as reusing the prior event’s viewer URL |

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Relaunch with a reusable encoder setup
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then choose the Stream tab for an encoder workflow. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load previous settings, including a stream key.
- Create or select a custom stream key. Under Select stream key, create a custom key if you need a reusable encoder credential. YouTube Help says: “To reuse the same stream key, create a custom stream key.” Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details in your encoder. Copy YouTube’s Stream URL into the encoder’s server or URL field, and the stream key into its key field. These are encoder inputs, not the public link for viewers.
- Start sending the feed. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and click Go live when ready.
- Share the right audience link. For an upcoming broadcast, schedule it in the Manage tab and share that event’s URL. If you use Reuse settings to create another stream, check and share the new event URL rather than assuming the old one still points to it.
End a scheduled broadcast carefully
For a completed scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule is not a promise about watch-link continuity.
If you only need a temporary interruption and intend to continue the same event, do not treat ending the stream as a harmless pause: the official guidance cited here does not define URL or event behavior for every interruption scenario. Avoid ending the event until you know whether you need to resume that same broadcast or create a new one.

Prepare for a relaunch or backup encoder
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Use that time to confirm the feed and viewer access rather than waiting until the audience is due.
- Inspect the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection.
- Confirm local archive files are growing, if you are recording locally.
- Check access from the channel page, the watch page, and mobile devices.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the test.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not start
The encoder cannot connect
Open Live Control Room, copy the stream key from the Stream section, and paste it into the encoder. Check that the encoder’s server or URL field contains YouTube’s Stream URL and that the key was entered in the separate key field. If the key was reset, replace the old value in the encoder.

The software signs in instead of using a stream key
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs users of software that logs into YouTube without a stream key to that software’s support team.
The audience link is not the one viewers expect
Confirm whether you shared a scheduled event’s watch-page URL or copied the encoder’s Stream URL or key. Only the watch-page URL is the viewer destination. If you created a separate stream using reused settings, verify its event page and share that link.
