To reframe a horizontal video for Shorts, Reels, TikTok, or a social feed, make a separate version in the destination’s aspect ratio, then check and adjust the crop throughout the edit. Automatic reframing can track a subject, but it cannot guarantee that faces, captions, graphics, or important action stay in view.
Choose the format for the destination
Aspect ratio determines the shape of the video frame. Reframing changes which parts of the original image are visible inside that shape; renaming a file or changing its export label does not recompose the shot.
| Destination | Starting aspect ratio |
|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | 9:16 vertical is a practical starting point. YouTube also accepts square videos for Shorts under the conditions below. |
| Instagram Reels and TikTok | 9:16, according to Adobe’s social-ratio guide. |
| Instagram in-feed | 4:5 or 1:1, according to Adobe’s guide. |
| Facebook in-feed | 1:1 or 4:5, according to Adobe’s guide. |
| Regular YouTube video | 16:9, according to Adobe’s guide. |
These are practical guide values, not a guarantee of current specifications for every placement. Check the destination’s latest requirements before export, especially for feed placements.
Prepare a separate version of the edit
- Keep the original intact. Preserve your source footage and master sequence, then create a separate sequence or canvas for each target format. This lets you revise the vertical crop without damaging the landscape version.
- Set the target ratio first. Choose the destination format before reframing. For a vertical Short, Reel, or TikTok video, start with 9:16. For regular YouTube, use 16:9. Choose 4:5 or 1:1 when making an Instagram or Facebook feed version, as appropriate to the placement and its current requirements.
- Apply automatic reframing if your editor supports it. In Premiere Pro, select the sequence and choose Auto Reframe Sequence, then choose the target format, such as vertical 9:16, and create the reframed sequence. Adobe describes applying Auto Reframe to clips or sequences for square, vertical, and widescreen output. See Adobe’s Auto Reframe instructions and Adobe’s Auto Reframe tutorial.
- Review the whole edit and correct the crop. Adjust position, scale, and rotation as needed. Add keyframes when the subject or action moves so the framing follows it. Check every shot and transition for faces, action, captions, titles, product details, and graphics that may be cut off. Adobe’s tutorial demonstrates refining the automatic result with manual adjustments and keyframes.
- Export and inspect the rendered file. Watch the export from beginning to end in the intended frame shape. Check for awkward tracking, cut-off text, missed action, and changes in framing at cuts before uploading.
Meet YouTube Shorts’ format and length rules
YouTube Help says a Short uploaded from a computer may be up to three minutes and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube’s date-specific guidance says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 that are square or vertical and no longer than three minutes are categorized as Shorts. See YouTube’s Shorts upload instructions and YouTube’s Shorts classification guidance. Check the current Help pages before publishing in case platform rules change.

Whichever editor you use, compare how it handles a full sequence versus individual clips, whether it provides useful manual corrections and keyframes, and whether the necessary feature exists in your version and device.
Common reframing problems and fixes
- A face or subject drifts out of frame: Review the entire shot rather than only its opening frame. Adjust position and add keyframes where the subject moves.
- Captions or graphics are cut off: Inspect the crop at every shot and transition. Move or resize on-screen elements for the new canvas rather than assuming they will remain inside it.
- The crop looks too tight: Reframe individual shots manually, or choose a less aggressive crop when the source composition allows it. A narrow vertical frame cannot show all of a wide scene at once.
- Automatic framing misses a change in action: Treat automation as a starting point. Correct its tracking with manual adjustments and keyframes, or reframe the affected clips individually.
- The upload is not treated as a Short: Check that the uploaded video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes under YouTube’s stated guidance. For date-based classification, YouTube specifies uploads made on or after October 15, 2024.
Or let it run in the cloud
Reframing is an editing task; keeping a finished video live on YouTube around the clock is a separate job. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
