Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To lower OBS CPU usage during a nonstop YouTube stream, first identify whether the problem is CPU encoding, scene rendering, or another workload. Then test changes in this order: use a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck, simplify resource-heavy scenes, and reduce output resolution or frame rate if the content allows. Record a baseline and test before going live; no single setting guarantees stability on every computer or for every stream duration.
Diagnose what is using resources before changing settings
High CPU use does not by itself prove that the encoder is the only cause. OBS uses GPU resources to composite scenes, and a game or other applications can compete for CPU and GPU capacity. OBS distinguishes rendering lag from encoding overload and dropped frames; those symptoms point to different problems. OBS’s troubleshooting guide also notes that GPU overload can keep OBS from rendering scenes on time even if a game appears to run normally.
- Record a baseline. In OBS, open Settings > Output and note the selected encoder and output settings. Record the output resolution and frame rate, CPU use during a representative workload, and any OBS status indicators or log messages.
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether you are seeing high CPU use, encoding overload, rendering lag, dropped frames, or more than one at once. Dropped frames can reflect network delivery trouble rather than CPU load.
- Change one setting at a time. Run a representative test after each change so you can tell whether it helped and whether picture quality or stream health suffered.
OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee that a setup will remain stable through a long broadcast. The OBS documents cited here were published between 2021 and 2023; application labels and hardware support can change, so check the current UI and guidance for your system.
Try a supported hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck
A hardware encoder can move video-encoding work off the CPU and onto a specialized component, if your computer has one supported by OBS. OBS’s hardware encoding guide covers NVIDIA NVENC, AMD, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox, with hardware and operating-system caveats. Use an encoder actually available on your machine rather than assuming one option applies to every computer.

- In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder options for the streaming output mode you use.
- Select a compatible hardware encoder and apply the change. Option names and availability vary by hardware, operating system, and OBS version.
- Test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with representative motion and audio. Compare image quality and check for encoding overload or other instability before relying on it for a nonstop stream.
Do not switch blindly. Encoder generations differ, and older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide very good quality with minimal performance impact, but that is not a guarantee for a particular device, driver, or workload. Compare the actual output you plan to use.
Simplify scenes and sources
Every source adds some resource demand, and some sources can continue using resources while hidden. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance recommends looking at source and scene complexity. Try these adjustments individually:

- Remove sources that are not needed and simplify scenes and scene collections for the current production.
- Use capture and media sources at no higher resolution than the stream output requires.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. Test disabling script-heavy animated overlays if they are not essential.
- For static artwork, try an OBS Image Source instead of a browser overlay when it suits the design.
- Keep the active scene collection focused on the scenes you actually need.
These are troubleshooting steps, not a measured ranking: which change helps most depends on the scene, sources, and computer. Check CPU and rendering status after each change.
Lower resolution or frame rate only if the content allows
Output resolution and frame rate affect workload. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps, while the right choice depends on the content and the audience’s visual needs. If the stream does not need the extra detail or motion smoothness, test a lower output resolution or frame rate and inspect the result before adopting it.

- Check the resulting picture, OBS performance indicators, and YouTube stream health before using the setting for a long broadcast.
OBS’s advanced recording guide lists the x264 CPU Usage Preset veryfast in a recording baseline. That isolated recording recommendation is not a universal YouTube streaming fix; encoder controls and quality tradeoffs depend on the configuration. See the OBS advanced recording settings guide for its recording context.
Set bitrate for YouTube delivery, not as a CPU fix
Bitrate primarily affects upload and delivery requirements; changing it alone should not be treated as a CPU optimization. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), supported codecs, and testing with representative audio and motion. It also says to monitor stream health during the broadcast.

For H.264 ingestion, YouTube’s table gives the following bitrate guidance. These are YouTube delivery recommendations, not CPU targets; the same table has separate values for AV1 and H.265.
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a value that fits YouTube’s guidance, your quality goal, and your available upload capacity. The guidance page does not display a publication date, so check it again before a stream if you need the latest platform settings.

Preflight a nonstop stream and troubleshoot symptoms
Run a test long enough to include the scenes, media, overlays, motion, and audio you expect to use. Watch OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream health; a short idle test may not reproduce the real workload. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live.
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| High CPU or encoding overload | Active encoder and CPU load in the actual scene | Test a supported hardware encoder; if CPU encoding remains necessary, test lower resolution or frame rate if acceptable. |
| Rendering lag | Scene complexity and competing GPU workloads | Remove unnecessary sources, reduce oversized or animated sources, and retest with the same scene. |
| Dropped frames | YouTube stream health and upload delivery, as well as OBS performance | Check upload capacity and use a bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s codec, resolution, and frame-rate guidance. Do not assume CPU is the cause. |
| Quality worsens after switching encoders | Image quality at the intended bitrate and encoder generation | Compare representative output before committing; use the encoder and settings that meet both quality and stability needs. |
There is no universal CPU reduction figure for these adjustments, and the cited guidance does not establish a safe maximum uninterrupted runtime. Treat the result of your own representative preflight—not a generic promise—as the basis for deciding whether the setup is ready.
If your current hardware cannot handle the workload
A graphics card with a supported NVENC encoder is one possible upgrade for a system whose diagnosed CPU encoding load cannot be solved with its current hardware. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide lists Windows and Linux support beginning with GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series Maxwell or higher and recommends a Turing-generation encoder for best results in its guide. Confirm the exact GPU, computer, operating system, drivers, power supply, and case compatibility before buying; an upgrade is not a universal requirement and does not guarantee a particular CPU reduction.
Or let it run in the cloud
