If you mean a live YouTube encoder instead, do not apply upload-file bitrate numbers to it: choose live settings for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s upload guidance says to keep the frame rate the same as the recording, and neither its guidance nor the available technical documentation establishes a best compression setting for Hindi bhajan files.
First decide: are you shrinking a recording or configuring a live feed?
These are separate jobs. Compressing an MP4 changes an existing file so it takes less storage or uploads faster. Configuring a live encoder sets the video and audio feed sent to YouTube while a broadcast is running. YouTube publishes different guidance for uploaded videos and live ingestion, so do not treat a recommended upload bitrate as a live-stream bitrate.

A smaller file is not automatically better: reducing bitrate or increasing compression can blur details and damage the sound. The right result depends on the source recording, its duration and content, the desired file size, and how much quality loss you will accept.
Reduce a prerecorded bhajan MP4 with FFmpeg
1. Keep an untouched original and inspect the source
Make a working copy so you can compare or restart if the encode is unsatisfactory. Before choosing settings, note the source resolution, frame rate, audio format, and duration. Use those properties to judge whether the output still suits the intended YouTube playback size. Do not change frame rate merely to make the file smaller: YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the content was recorded.

2. Choose quality-based encoding or a target bitrate
With FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder, CRF is a quality-based control: it is a starting point for deciding the quality-versus-size tradeoff, not a promised file size. FFmpeg also offers presets that trade encoding speed for compression efficiency; a slower preset can take longer to encode. No particular CRF value or preset has been established as best for a Hindi bhajan, so judge the result from your own source file.
If you need to meet a specific size or bitrate, a target-bitrate approach may be more useful, but it still requires checking the actual output. Compare the file size, visible image quality, and sound rather than assuming a number will work equally well for every recording.

3. Encode a sample, inspect it, then encode the full recording
Try a representative short section first. View it at the playback size you expect people to use, and listen carefully to vocals and instruments. If you see unwanted softness, blocking, or other visible damage—or hear artifacts—adjust one setting at a time and encode another sample. This sample-and-adjust approach is practical guidance, not a test of any particular bhajan file.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4Here, 23 is an example CRF value, not a guaranteed recommendation, and 192k is an example audio bitrate. Tune both to the source and your quality target. If the existing audio is already suitable, avoid re-encoding it unnecessarily when your workflow permits copying it instead; changing or re-encoding audio can affect sound quality.
4. Check the completed MP4 before uploading
- Play the whole output or check key sections, including quiet passages and dense instrumental parts.
- Listen for damaged vocals, distortion, or other changes in the sound.
- Confirm the resolution and frame rate remain appropriate for the source and planned playback.
- Compare the actual output size with the original; the result depends on the source and chosen settings.
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 video and supports audio options including AAC-LC. It also recommends keeping the recorded frame rate. Its undated help guidance lists these SDR upload video bitrate references at standard frame rates; they are upload recommendations, not a bhajan-specific optimum:

These figures concern upload encoding guidance, not the live feed. For a live stream, select the matching row in YouTube’s live recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and a two-second keyframe interval.

The example command includes -movflags +faststart. FFmpeg documents this option as moving the MP4 moov atom—the metadata needed to play the file—from the end toward the beginning, which can improve playback behavior while the file is being accessed. YouTube also recommends the moov atom at the front for upload files. It does not make the video more compressed or reduce the encoded video bitrate.

Configure a live YouTube encoder separately
- Choose the output resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the intended live format and find the corresponding combination in YouTube’s live encoder recommendations.
- Set the live bitrate from that live table. Do not substitute the upload references of 8 Mbps for 1080p, 5 Mbps for 720p, or 2.5 Mbps for 480p; those figures are upload guidance.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS. These are YouTube’s stated encoder recommendations.
- Check connection capacity. The available upload connection must sustain the selected live feed. If it cannot, choose a live configuration your connection can maintain, using YouTube’s guidance for that resolution, frame rate, and codec.
A live encoder’s bitrate controls the outgoing feed; re-encoding a prerecorded MP4 controls that file’s size. If you are streaming a pre-recorded bhajan, you may need to prepare the MP4 and separately configure the live delivery path. The settings for one do not replace the settings for the other.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The output is still too large: inspect the actual file size and try a different quality/size setting or slower preset, then review another sample. There is no single CRF value that guarantees a specific size across sources.
- The video looks soft or blocky: the chosen encode may be too aggressive for the source or intended playback size. Re-encode a sample with less compression and compare it.
- Vocals or instruments sound worse: audio re-encoding can affect the sound. Revisit the audio choice and, when appropriate, avoid re-encoding audio that is already suitable.
- The file starts playing slowly while being accessed: use MP4 fast-start metadata with
-movflags +faststart. This changes metadata placement, not compression ratio. - A live stream is unstable: check whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen live bitrate, then consult YouTube’s live table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- The live feed does not match the uploaded file’s settings: configure the live encoder according to live-ingestion recommendations rather than carrying over upload bitrate references.
