To reduce CPU usage, first find out whether OBS is spending the effort decoding the looped video, rendering the scene, or encoding the outgoing stream. Then change the setting that matches the bottleneck: enable supported GPU decoding for a Media Source, simplify oversized media or a demanding scene, or use a compatible hardware encoder if x264 encoding is the problem. There is no reliable universal CPU-savings figure; compare performance on your own setup after changing one thing at a time.
First identify what is using the CPU
Looping controls playback; it does not reveal which part of the stream is demanding resources. OBS handles three distinct jobs: decoding source video, rendering and compositing the scene, and encoding the final stream. A fix for one job may not help the others.
- Decoding: OBS reads and decompresses the looped video file. A suitable GPU may be able to handle supported formats.
- Rendering: OBS composes sources such as video, browser content, images, and overlays into the scene.
- Encoding: OBS compresses the finished scene for YouTube. With x264, this work is done by the CPU; a supported hardware encoder can move it to a dedicated component.
OBS says CPU requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming, but its encoder guidance does not prescribe a loop-specific CPU fix. OBS System Requirements · YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
Choose the right looping source
| Need | OBS source | Setting and compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | Enable Loop in the source properties. The source also offers Use hardware decoding when available, which helps only if the GPU can decode that file’s format. |
| Rotate through several files | VLC Video | Use a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Choose this source for playlist behavior, not on the assumption that VLC always uses less CPU. |
Both source types have visibility behavior that can affect what happens when a source is hidden. VLC Video can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue, depending on its setting. Media Source’s Close file when inactive unloads a hidden source to free memory, but OBS notes that it can take a short time to appear again after a scene switch. It is not a general fix for CPU use while the source is actively looping. See OBS Media Sources.

Reduce decoding and scene-rendering work
Try hardware decoding for a Media Source
- In OBS, open the Media Source properties for the looped file.
- Enable Use hardware decoding when available.
- Replay the same file and compare CPU use and playback behavior. If the GPU lacks a suitable decoder for the file, the setting may not move decoding work off the CPU.
Keep the setting only if it works correctly on your GPU, driver, and file. It changes decoding; it does not replace the encoder used for the outgoing stream.
Right-size the video and simplify the scene
- If a video is much larger than the stream output, try a copy closer to the intended output resolution. OBS uses a 4K asset scaled down as an example of media that may be unnecessarily large; that example is not a measured CPU-savings claim.
- Remove sources the scene does not need, particularly expensive sources. Reduce needless browser sources, and use static image sources for non-animated graphics where appropriate.
- Make one adjustment at a time, then check whether it changes CPU use or fixes rendering problems.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance recommends simplifying scenes and limiting costly sources.

Adjust output only if the system needs it
Resolution and frame rate affect performance, but lowering them also changes the stream’s appearance. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Reducing output resolution can also reduce encoder load.
- Try 30 fps if the system struggles to deliver 60 fps smoothly.
- If needed, test a lower output resolution that still suits the content and viewers.
- Compare the result at the same scene and playback conditions before deciding whether the visual tradeoff is worthwhile.
These are options, not mandatory settings for every computer. OBS’s guidance does not establish a universal resolution or frame rate that will solve a particular loop’s CPU load.

Use a hardware encoder when CPU encoding is the bottleneck
If OBS is using x264 and encoding is the CPU bottleneck, a compatible hardware encoder may shift that work to a specialized GPU component. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance, but support and image quality vary by hardware generation and platform; older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality than software encoding at comparable bitrates. This is a tradeoff, not a guaranteed quality or CPU improvement for every setup. OBS Hardware Encoding (guidance dated January 11, 2022).
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC on Windows and Linux for supported GeForce generations, AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, Intel Quick Sync with processor-generation caveats, and Apple VideoToolbox with Mac-specific limitations. Available options depend on your hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS. Check what OBS actually offers before changing encoders or considering new hardware.

- Confirm that OBS is using CPU-based x264 encoding and that encoding, rather than decoding or scene rendering, is the problem.
- Check whether OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder for your system.
- Switch encoder only if it is available, then verify stream output quality and stability under the same conditions.
Do not buy a GPU or computer before establishing that CPU encoding is the bottleneck and that your current system lacks a suitable supported encoder.

- Note CPU use and whether playback and the stream behave correctly with your current scene.
- Change one setting, such as hardware decoding, media size, a scene source, output frame rate, or encoder.
- Repeat the same playback and streaming conditions, then compare CPU use and any visible or reported performance problems.
- Keep the change only if the result helps without an unacceptable quality, compatibility, or playback tradeoff.
The OBS sources do not publish a benchmark for a particular looped file or system, so no specific percentage reduction can be promised.

Common problems and fixes
- Hardware decoding makes no difference: The GPU may not decode that file’s format, or decoding may not be the bottleneck. Check the source and test scene or encoding changes separately.
- The loop plays, but CPU use remains high: Looping itself does not identify the costly workload. Check scene complexity and whether x264 is encoding the stream on the CPU.
- A hidden Media Source takes time to reappear: If Close file when inactive is enabled, the file may need a short time to reopen after a scene switch.
- VLC Video is unavailable or incompatible: Install VLC and match its bitness to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Changing output settings helps but the stream looks less smooth or detailed: That is the tradeoff from lowering frame rate or resolution. Use the highest settings your system can sustain reliably.
- A hardware encoder looks worse at the same bitrate: Image quality can vary by hardware generation; older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at comparable bitrates.
