Start by checking what FFmpeg is doing, then change one setting at a time: try a faster encoder preset, remove filters or scaling you do not need, and test a modest -filter_threads limit if filters are competing for VPS CPU. Verify that the stream still runs at real-time speed and that quality, bitrate, playlist transitions, and YouTube ingest health remain acceptable. There is no single CPU target or command that fits every playlist and VPS.
Find out what is using CPU before changing the command
CPU can be consumed by video encoding, filtering, scaling, or frame-rate conversion. Network capacity is a separate constraint: a fast encoder does not guarantee a stable stream if the VPS cannot upload at the required rate.
- Record the FFmpeg build and full command, the VPS vCPU allocation, playlist files and their stream properties, and the intended output resolution and frame rate.
- Note CPU use and FFmpeg’s reported processing speed while the stream is running. Check whether it sustains real-time output; a CPU cap that makes FFmpeg fall behind is not a successful optimization.
- Identify whether the command re-encodes video or applies filters such as scaling or frame-rate conversion. If the source already matches the target, investigate whether re-encoding can be avoided—but do not assume stream copy will work for an arbitrary playlist or YouTube ingest setup.
Compare results on the actual VPS and representative files. A CPU reading from another server is not a reliable target for yours.
Try a faster libx264 preset
If FFmpeg encodes with libx264, test a faster preset. FFmpeg documents presets as an encoder control; a faster preset generally takes less encoding effort but is less compression-efficient. At comparable visual quality, it may therefore need a higher bitrate. The exact CPU and quality trade-off depends on the source and VPS, so measure rather than expecting a fixed saving. See the FFmpeg libx264 documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Change only the preset in the video-encoding options of your existing command.
- Stream representative footage and compare CPU use, FFmpeg speed, output bitrate, and visible quality with the original command.
- Keep the change only if the stream remains at real-time speed and the result meets your quality and bitrate requirements.
A faster preset is not a reason to exceed the bitrate appropriate for your YouTube resolution and frame rate. Check the current encoder guidance before settling on output settings.
Remove unnecessary filters, then test filter threading
Filters can add work independently of encoding. If the output does not need resizing or frame-rate conversion, remove those operations and retest. If filtering is needed and CPU contention remains, try an explicit, modest -filter_threads value. FFmpeg defines the option as: “Defines how many threads are used to process a filter pipeline.” Its documented default is the number of available CPUs. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Filter threading and encoder threading are separate controls. A -threads limit may reduce concurrency, but it can also stop encoding from keeping up with real time; it is not a substitute for diagnosing filters. Test one change at a time and compare CPU use and processing speed together. An explicit filter-thread limit is a tuning test, not a guaranteed CPU reduction.
Make playlist inputs compatible
When playlist items differ, transitions can fail or behave inconsistently. The FFmpeg concat demuxer expects matching streams and timing properties. Inspect the files’ codecs, time bases, resolutions, and other stream characteristics; normalize items that differ to common characteristics before concatenating. This is a compatibility precaution, not a demonstrated CPU optimization. The FFmpeg-user playlist discussion is community guidance, not a performance study.

Do not assume normalization itself will lower CPU use: converting files may require encoding work. If you prepare a playlist from mixed sources, assess the cost of that preparation separately from the load of the live streaming command.
Keep YouTube ingest settings compatible
Check the current YouTube encoder guidance for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec. YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. Consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and applicable codec guidance.

For H.264, YouTube lists recommended examples of 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p60, 3 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. These are recommendations for those particular resolution and frame-rate combinations, not universal settings. Use the current table row for your output rather than copying an example that does not match it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check network capacity separately
A network-limited stream can fail even when FFmpeg encodes fast enough. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend “primary + backup + 20%” upload room. Compare that requirement with the VPS’s available upload capacity and the stream’s configured bitrate; do not treat CPU headroom as network headroom. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Use a controlled tuning sequence
- Capture a baseline with the existing command and representative playlist: CPU use, FFmpeg speed, output bitrate, and stream health.
- Remove an unnecessary filter or conversion, if present, and test again.
- If using libx264, test a faster preset and review quality and bitrate as well as CPU and speed.
- If the pipeline uses filters and contention persists, test an explicit
-filter_threadscount. Avoid changing encoder and filter thread controls together until you can identify which change helped. - Inspect playlist stream properties if transitions fail or files behave differently; normalize mismatches and verify playback across transitions.
- Confirm YouTube settings and upload headroom independently of CPU tuning.
If the tuned pipeline still cannot sustain real-time output, compare VPS options by their available CPU resources and verified support for any hardware encoding you intend to use. A provider must expose suitable hardware, and the FFmpeg build must support it; neither is established for an unspecified VPS. Include recurring VPS cost in that decision rather than assuming a hardware-encoding option is available.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg speed falls below real time | Encoding preset, filters, scaling, frame-rate conversion, and CPU allocation | Remove unnecessary processing, test a faster preset, then test filter threading where relevant. Recheck speed after each change. |
| CPU drops after limiting threads, but the stream falls behind | Whether encoding or filtering has become too constrained | Back off the limit until the pipeline sustains real-time output; judge the stream by both CPU and speed. |
| Playlist transitions fail or look inconsistent | Codec, time base, resolution, and other stream-property differences between files | Normalize mismatched items to common characteristics and test transitions again. |
| Encoding is fast but the live stream is unstable | Upload capacity relative to primary and backup stream bitrate, plus the YouTube ingest configuration | Check YouTube’s network-headroom guidance and verify the selected codec, bitrate, keyframes, and ingest protocol. |
| Faster preset changes the picture or bitrate | Compression-efficiency trade-off at the new preset | Compare representative footage and bitrate; choose a setting that meets quality and ingest constraints. |
