The main lever for reducing Azure bandwidth charges is sending fewer outbound gigabytes—not choosing a smaller VM. First confirm that the stream is driving the bill, then measure its actual bitrate and runtime, choose a YouTube ingest bitrate that fits the content, and preserve enough headroom for a stable stream. A VM resize may change available throughput, but it does not directly reduce the bytes your encoder sends.
What Azure charges for—and what a VM size changes
Azure charges for data transfer based on the volume of traffic. Outbound traffic from an Azure VM to an external endpoint may incur data transfer fees. For a stream sent to YouTube, the relevant cost question is how many billable outbound gigabytes the deployment sends; rates depend on region and billing context. Microsoft’s bandwidth guidance explains the distinction.
A VM’s size sets a network-throughput limit. That limit is a performance ceiling for egress regardless of destination; it is not the same thing as the billable volume of data transferred. A smaller VM can restrict throughput and threaten stream stability without reducing the amount of video data sent at a given bitrate. Resize only when compute use or VM cost supports the change, and verify the chosen size can sustain the stream.
Establish which meter is driving the bill
- Open Azure Cost Analysis for the billing period you want to investigate. Break costs down by service or resource, then inspect the bandwidth or data-transfer meter associated with the VM and confirm that it is material to the total. Interface labels can vary; Microsoft’s older Cost Analysis interface pointer may help locate the relevant view.
- Record the billing context. Note the subscription, region, billing offer, period, resource, and exact meter shown. Without these details and actual usage, an outside estimate cannot establish your rate or promise a saving.
- Compare usage before and after a change. Use the same billing meter and comparable periods where possible. Check actual Azure usage records after changing the stream; a bitrate calculation is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the bill.
Estimate how much a continuous stream sends
For a rough decimal-unit estimate, use:
GB transferred ≈ bitrate in Mbps × runtime in seconds ÷ 8,000

At a sustained rate, 1 Mbps for one hour is about 0.45 GB. Multiply the actual outbound rate by runtime to estimate the stream’s video transfer, then account for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other active feed. If primary and backup encoders transmit concurrently, include both. The result is an estimate of volume—not an Azure price calculation.
For example, a stream averaging 8 Mbps for 24 hours has a rough baseline of 86.4 GB per day before overhead or other feeds (8 × 24 × 0.45). A month-long projection depends on actual runtime, measured rate, and how the stream behaves during reconnections; reconcile the estimate with Azure usage records.

Choose an ingest bitrate that matches the stream
YouTube publishes recommended live-ingestion bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and transcodes incoming streams into playback formats. The recommendations are starting points, not universal minimum requirements. Lowering the source bitrate can reduce outbound volume, but may also reduce picture quality, especially for fast motion or detailed footage. Choose based on the actual documentary material and test representative scenes before keeping a lower setting.
| Codec and output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are the recommendations on YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page, accessed October 4, 2026; the page displays no publication date. Check the current table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate before changing encoder settings.

Make a controlled change
- Note the current codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and measured outbound rate.
- Choose a lower setting only if it still suits the footage and is consistent with YouTube’s current guidance for that codec and output.
- Test with representative motion and audio. Check YouTube stream health and watch for dropped frames, instability, or unacceptable image quality.
- Keep the setting only if it improves the cost-relevant transfer volume without compromising the viewing experience or stability.
Keep reliability headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% and advises accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates in capacity planning. Treat that margin as a reliability requirement when tuning down—not spare capacity to eliminate. The guidance appears in YouTube Help’s streaming tips (accessed October 4, 2026; no publication date displayed).
Check whether a backup feed is merely configured or actively transmitting: a concurrent feed adds outbound traffic and must be included in both bandwidth-capacity and volume estimates. After a change, monitor the stream under representative conditions rather than assuming a nominal bitrate guarantees stable delivery.

Check regional pricing and special transfer policies
Azure transfer rates vary with region and billing details. Use the Azure pricing calculator for a forecast, then validate it against the actual subscription’s Cost Analysis meter and usage records. Do not apply a generic per-GB figure without confirming the region and offer.
Microsoft’s bandwidth pricing policy provides at-cost transfer only for qualifying EEA, EFTA, or UK customers and specific qualifying transfers to another provider. This is not a general discount for ordinary YouTube or CDN delivery; CDN delivery is excluded. Do not assume the policy applies to a YouTube stream unless Azure confirms that the specific arrangement qualifies.
