To loop one nature recording in OBS, add it to a Media Source and enable Loop. To play multiple recordings in sequence, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the source active in the scene and check its visibility behavior and audio routing before going live. These settings repeat media; they do not guarantee a stream will run without interruption.
Choose the right OBS source

Despite its name, VLC Video is not limited to video: OBS describes it as accepting video and other media files, including audio. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio types for Media Source, but that list does not guarantee every file or encoding will work on every system. Loop one audio file with Media Source
- Open the OBS scene where the nature recording should play.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, select the local audio file.
- Enable Loop, then select OK. OBS defines this option as making the file play again after playback completes.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed as intended in OBS.
Do not confuse Loop with “Close file when inactive.” That separate Media Source option unloads the file when the source is hidden or its scene is inactive. OBS notes that loading it again may cause a short delay; it is not the repeat-playback setting.
Loop several recordings with a VLC playlist
- Install VLC Media Player if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, open the intended scene, select + in the Sources dock, and add a VLC Video source.
- In the source properties, add the nature recordings to the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist so the source starts again after reaching the end of its media files.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence, or enable it if you want playback in random order.
- Confirm the source is visible, then check the audio meter and routing before starting the stream.
Set what happens when a source is hidden
A source can become hidden when you switch scenes or turn off its visibility. For a VLC source, choose the visibility behavior that fits your scene:

- Stop when not visible, restart when visible: playback stops while hidden and starts again when shown.
- Pause when not visible, resume when visible: playback pauses while hidden and continues from that point when shown again.
- Always play, even when hidden: playback continues when the source is not visible.
Choose deliberately: a hidden source set to stop or pause may not behave like an always-running background bed if you switch away from its scene. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources belong to scenes; its Media Sources guide describes media playback options.
Check before going live
- Confirm the intended scene is active and the audio source is enabled and visible where required.
- Watch the OBS audio meter while the file plays. Make sure the source is routed to the stream’s audio output, not only to local monitoring.
- For a playlist, verify VLC is installed with the architecture that matches OBS and that the intended files appear in the list.
- Check that the recording’s license and the platform’s terms allow your intended use. OBS playback support does not establish rebroadcast rights.
What looping can—and cannot—keep running
Loop and Loop Playlist control what OBS does when a file or playlist reaches its end. They are playback settings, not a reliability guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast. The official OBS documentation describes the mechanism but does not promise zero gaps or uninterrupted operation under all conditions. A stream can also be affected by the computer, OBS, network connection, scene changes, or platform interruptions.
