You configure a YouTube Live Redirect in YouTube Studio, not in OBS. OBS sends your video to YouTube; Studio tells YouTube which Premiere or eligible live stream viewers should be sent to after your source stream ends.
What OBS does—and what YouTube does
OBS is the encoder: it sends your video feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. The redirect is a separate YouTube Studio setting attached to the source stream. OBS does not choose the destination or trigger the viewer handoff itself. YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions and encoder setup guidance describe these as separate parts of the workflow.
Check eligibility and destination permissions
- YouTube’s stated eligibility for creators sending a redirect is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.
- To redirect viewers to another channel’s live stream, that channel must allow the redirect. The destination creator can manage access in YouTube Studio > Settings > Community, allowing channels they subscribe to, all channels, or specifically approved channels. The specific-channel list supports up to 100 channels and can be combined with the subscriptions option.
- The destination needs to be an available Premiere or live stream: check that it is upcoming or active as applicable. If the destination creator uses the subscriptions permission option, public subscription visibility may affect eligibility.
These requirements are YouTube’s documented rules; the Help pages retrieved for this guide do not show a publication date, and Studio labels or requirements can change.
Set up the redirect in YouTube Studio
- Prepare the destination first. Schedule the Premiere or set up the destination livestream before configuring the source. YouTube recommends creating the Premiere before setting up the source livestream.
- Open the source stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Live. Hover over the source livestream and select Edit.
- Choose the destination. Open Customization, find Redirect, select Add, then choose the Premiere or eligible channel’s live stream.
- Check the event before going live. In Live Control Room, check the stream preview before the event. Start OBS with the YouTube server URL and current stream key, then confirm YouTube is receiving the stream.
- End the source stream cleanly. When it is time to hand off, stop sending content from OBS. For scheduled streams, YouTube’s instructions also direct creators to select End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending encoder content. Follow the steps shown for your stream type.
YouTube should show a confirmation that viewers will be redirected when the source ends. Premiere viewers may wait about two seconds for the handoff; tell your audience to wait briefly while their screens reload.

Help viewers make the handoff
- Tell viewers in advance that the source stream is ending and they should wait a few seconds for YouTube to load the destination.
- If the destination is a Premiere, pin a chat message on its watch page directing viewers to the source livestream, as YouTube recommends.
- If you want other creators to redirect viewers to your live stream, set the appropriate permission in YouTube Studio > Settings > Community.
Troubleshooting
The destination does not appear in the list
Confirm the destination is an upcoming or active stream or an upcoming Premiere, as applicable. If it belongs to another channel, ask its creator to review redirect permissions. If access depends on subscribed channels, check whether the relevant subscription is public.
OBS cannot start sending the stream
Get the current stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and update it in OBS. A changed or outdated key can prevent the encoder from connecting.
