To record a YouTube live stream, enable YouTube’s automatic archive and, for an important broadcast, record a separate local copy while you stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Afterward, find the replay in YouTube Studio under Content > Live. You can make a highlight, trim the replay in Studio, or download your own upload for editing elsewhere.
Choose a recording and editing route
| Option | Best for | Important limit or check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic YouTube archive | Keeping a replay available in Studio | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; YouTube recommends keeping a local backup for important broadcasts. |
| Local recording during the broadcast | A separate backup and source copy | Check during the stream that the file is growing and that audio and video are being recorded. |
| YouTube Studio highlight | Publishing a shorter segment quickly | Markers help locate moments, and YouTube says a created highlight is automatically published. |
| YouTube Studio Editor | Trimming the existing replay | The trim feature applies to videos shorter than six hours; saving edits has limitations. |
| Download and edit elsewhere | Post-production outside Studio | Downloads of your own uploads may be 720p or 360p, depending on video size. |
Before the livestream: set up a dependable recording
Choose how you will go live
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestreams. An encoder is useful when you need gameplay capture, overlays, or external audio and video equipment. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If you use an encoder, connect it with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key, then check the preview before going live. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
YouTube’s official guidance says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a longer stream may not be captured at all. Because an archive is not guaranteed, use a local recording as a second copy if the event matters.
Check the local copy while live
- Confirm recording has started and the local file is increasing in size.
- Check that the recording includes both the intended video and audio.
- Keep enough storage available for the full broadcast. An external SSD is one optional place to keep a local archive; YouTube does not prescribe a particular drive, capacity, or speed.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips specifically recommend checking that the local archive is being recorded and monitoring audio and video quality. Do not wait until the broadcast ends to discover that the local recording failed.

Find and manage the YouTube archive
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the Live tab to find past broadcasts.
- Open the archive’s details to change its visibility or delete it.
Archive availability applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams, but broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Mobile stream archives can also be managed from the mobile My videos page. If the replay is missing, check whether the stream exceeded that duration and whether a local copy was recorded.
Make a highlight from the stream
A highlight is the quickest Studio route when you want to publish a short, important passage rather than edit the full replay. You can create one during a livestream or after it ends.

- During the broadcast, add a stream marker near a moment you may want to use. A marker helps you find that point on the timeline later.
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream and choose the option to create a highlight.
- Use the marker and timeline to select the passage. Adjust its timestamps, trim the selection, and mute or unmute it as needed.
- Set the highlight’s title and privacy, then create it.
YouTube says highlights are automatically published when created. Review the selected passage, title, and privacy before completing the process.
Trim the replay in YouTube Studio
Studio’s Editor is suited to straightforward cuts on the existing upload. On a computer, open YouTube Studio, select Content, choose the video, and open Editor. Use the trim control to remove material from the beginning or end; select New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview the result before saving.

YouTube says this feature works on videos shorter than six hours without re-uploading the video, and the URL, views, and comments remain. There are important save restrictions:
- Some unedited videos with more than 100,000 views may not be saveable, except for face blurring, unless the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program.
- YouTube states that, as of June 2025, saved Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.”
Keep your local source copy before saving, and check the preview carefully. The original file is the safer recovery route if a saved edit is not what you intended.

Download your upload for an external editor
If you need a separate post-production workflow, YouTube Studio lets you download your own uploads from the video’s menu in Content. YouTube documents MP4 downloads at 720p or 360p, depending on video size; that may be lower resolution than the original livestream. Google Takeout is another option for downloading all of your uploaded videos.
An individual download may be unavailable if the video was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a pre-approved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in 24 hours. The download feature is for your own uploads, not another creator’s videos. Studio is generally the more direct choice for a simple trim or highlight on the existing replay; an external editor is a separate route when you need more post-production flexibility, but the documented download may not retain the original resolution.

Check rights before broadcasting or publishing the replay
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights. Check permissions for music, clips, and other third-party material before going live and before leaving a replay public. A recording or archive does not remove those obligations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If what you need is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a recording of a camera-based live event, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works, as do cards in India; card checkout is available worldwide. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not going live from a camera. Start the free first day.
