How to Record a Live Stream for Free

Use OBS Studio to save a live stream locally for free, or use YouTube’s archive for your own broadcast—with a local recording as backup.

For a free local recording, use OBS Studio: add the stream’s video and audio sources, choose where and how to save the file, then click Start Recording. This works best when the stream is playing on a computer you can capture. If you are recording your own YouTube broadcast, YouTube may also archive it automatically, but its guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

Choose a recording method

Method Best for Trade-off
OBS Studio local recording Saving a local copy, keeping a backup, or controlling the recording file Uses computer resources and local storage; initial source and output setup takes some work.
Platform archive Keeping a copy of your own broadcast when the platform supports archiving Availability and retention depend on the platform. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
External storage Recording when your computer’s current drive lacks room, or keeping files separate Optional; no particular drive size or model is required by the workflow.

OBS Studio is free and open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The OBS Project’s official homepage showed version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026, when checked; releases and interface details can change. OBS’s help portal says the software has no watermark or usage limitations and is distributed under GPLv2: OBS Project and OBS Help Portal.

Record a stream with OBS

  1. Download OBS from the official project website. Install the version for your operating system and open the program.
  2. Add the source containing the stream. In the Sources area, select the appropriate display, window, capture device, or other source for your setup. Source names and availability vary by operating system and by whether the stream is playing in a browser or coming from another device. Add the audio source too; a picture without the stream audio is a common miss.
  3. Set the destination and recording options. Open Settings → Output and choose a recording path, format, and quality that suit your available storage and editing plans. Twitch’s OBS recording guide lists formats including FLV, MP4, MOV, MKV, TS, and M3U8 in the interface it describes; labels and options can change between OBS releases. For a recording you may edit, choose an option compatible with your editing workflow. OBS Help recommends starting with Simple output mode and its recording presets, then considering a hardware encoder if one is available. See Twitch’s recording guide and OBS’s local recording guide.
  4. Make a short test recording. Check that the video is framed correctly, system audio is present, and your microphone is included if needed. Stop the test and play the file in a media player before relying on the setup for an important stream.
  5. Record the stream. Click Start Recording in OBS. Confirm the recording is active, then stop it when finished and verify that the file is saved at the destination you selected. Twitch’s guide distinguishes this local recording from an online Video on Demand archive.

Plan for file size and computer load

Higher recording quality creates larger files. Check available disk space before a long session and ensure the computer can handle the selected sources and encoder. If the built-in drive has insufficient room, an external drive is an optional destination. OBS Help recommends trying its Simple output mode and recording presets; a hardware encoder may help when your computer has one, but no single setting is right for every machine or source.

Use YouTube’s archive for your own broadcast

YouTube can automatically archive a creator’s live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live to manage your live content and its archive, including visibility or deletion. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Check YouTube Help: Archive live streams for current behavior.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This archive is useful for your own broadcast, but it is not a substitute for a local copy when you need one, and it does not grant permission to copy or reuse another creator’s video.

Do you need a capture card?

Not for the ordinary computer-screen or webcam workflow described here: OBS can capture sources available on the computer. Extra hardware is only relevant when your particular source setup requires it—for example, bringing a separate camera or console signal into the computer. YouTube’s streaming overview describes encoder-based streams that can include gameplay, overlays, microphones, and cameras; it does not make a capture card a universal requirement. Copyright, consent, and platform rules

Recording a stream and having the right to reuse it are separate questions. This guide explains how to save a recording; it does not establish a blanket right to record, download, redistribute, or publish someone else’s stream. Rights, consent, and platform terms can depend on the content, circumstances, and jurisdiction. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check the applicable rules and obtain permission where needed before recording or reusing a broadcast.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable recording

  • The recording has no sound: Confirm that the relevant desktop, application, or capture-device audio source is included and active. Make a short test and play it back before the full session.
  • The picture is blank or shows the wrong area: Check that OBS is capturing the intended display, window, device, or source, then verify the preview before recording.
  • The file is too large or the drive fills up: Lower the recording quality or choose a destination with more available space. Higher quality means larger files; an external drive is optional if local capacity is limited.
  • The file will not open in your editing program: Review the selected recording format and choose one supported by your intended player or editor. OBS’s available options can vary by release.
  • You cannot find the saved video: Recheck the recording path under Settings → Output, stop the recording cleanly, and inspect that destination.
  • YouTube did not create an archive: Confirm the stream was your own and check its duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so a local OBS recording is the safer backup for long broadcasts.

Twitch notes that it cannot troubleshoot third-party applications such as OBS; for OBS-specific help, use the OBS Help Portal.
