If the channel is already compromised, recover and secure that Google Account first. A dropped stream is not, by itself, evidence of hacking.
Secure the Google Account that controls your channel
YouTube says a compromised channel means at least one associated Google Account has been compromised. Start with the account, not with the stream settings. YouTube recommends 2-Step Verification and a passkey as the strongest protection against phishing among the options it lists. YouTube’s channel security guidance also recommends setting up recovery options.
- Enable 2-Step Verification. In your Google Account security settings, turn it on and choose a passkey as the second verification method where available. A passkey is the recommended phishing-resistant choice; it does not replace recovery planning.
- Add recovery details. Keep a recovery phone number and email address current so you have a way to regain access if you are locked out.
- Prepare a fallback. Google lists other verification methods, including Google prompts, SMS codes, printed backup codes, and security keys. YouTube’s guidance ranks Google prompts above SMS codes and describes SMS and printed backup codes as less secure options than passkeys. Google lists security keys as an available re-authentication method; compatibility depends on the key and your devices. See YouTube’s security guidance and its information on account verification methods.
Keep recovery options usable and stored safely. A second factor helps protect sign-in; recovery details help if you lose access to your usual device or verification method.
Control who and what can access the channel
Do not share your Google Account password with an editor, producer, moderator, or contractor. Use YouTube channel permissions or Brand Account permissions to grant collaborators only the access they need, then review the access list and remove people who no longer work on the channel. Also review connected apps and disconnect ones you no longer use. YouTube’s creator safety tips explain these precautions.

Recognize phishing and malware risks
Unexpected sponsorship or brand-deal approaches can be used to trick creators into handing over access or opening a malicious file. Verify an offer through a contact route you already trust. Do not provide sign-in details or channel access to a supposed sponsor, and do not open unexpected attachments or install software from an untrusted source.
YouTube says it will not ask for your password or account details by email, message, or phone call. Keep your computer and browser protected: YouTube’s safety guidance recommends scanning for malware, avoiding untrusted downloads, and using Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome. These measures reduce exposure to common account-theft routes; they do not guarantee that an account cannot be compromised. See YouTube’s safety tips for creators.

What to do if you think the channel was hacked
Possible warning signs include profile or description changes, changes to email settings or the AdSense association that you did not make, or videos you did not upload. Use YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery guidance and work through this sequence:
- Recover the associated Google Account. If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery. Set a new password that you have not used on another site.
- Secure the account. Once you regain access, review sign-in and security settings, turn on 2-Step Verification with a passkey, and confirm that recovery details are yours and current.
- Undo unauthorized channel changes. Check channel details, settings, uploaded videos, and other changes, and reverse what you did not authorize.
- Review access for every channel user. Remove unauthorized or unnecessary users and connected apps; ask legitimate collaborators to secure their own accounts too.
- Seek eligible support if needed. YouTube says creators who have recovered their Google Account may contact Creator Support. Its help page says support for potential hacking incidents is limited to incidents within the past nine months because of data retention. The page also provides a hacked-channel assistant.
Tell account compromise apart from a stream interruption
An unfamiliar upload or account-setting change can point to unauthorized access. A broadcast that stops or becomes unstable does not establish that the channel was hacked. Account-security guidance helps reduce takeover risk, but it does not diagnose an interruption caused by an encoder, network conditions, or a YouTube service incident.

YouTube’s live streaming tips cover eligibility and streaming methods, not a complete method for diagnosing those kinds of interruptions. If you are investigating a drop, do not treat the security checklist as proof of its cause; check the relevant broadcast setup and service information separately.
