A 24/7 YouTube live stream is a continuous feed sent from an encoder to YouTube—not a Studio page left open. To produce one, first enable live streaming for your channel, then send a stable video-and-audio feed using a software or hardware encoder, test what happens when the connection fails, and plan how you will record the broadcast. YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted operation, and very long streams have archive and DVR limitations.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube live stream
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
- A video and audio source, such as a prerecorded documentary loop or a live production.
- An encoder: software running on a computer, or dedicated hardware.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen resolution and bitrate.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery, and recording.
YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. Its verified-encoder examples are options, not YouTube-made products or blanket endorsements. A software encoder can be enough for a simple loop or static scene; a complex multi-camera or professionally mixed production may warrant dedicated hardware. Consider the number of sources, compatibility, operating requirements, recovery options, and total purchase and operating costs rather than assuming one category is always better.
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If live streaming is being enabled for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. These are YouTube Help eligibility and setup figures; the documentation pages do not state a publication year.
Check eligibility and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio before scheduling a continuous broadcast. Do not treat a scheduled start time as proof that the channel is ready: confirm that the encoder can connect and that YouTube shows its incoming preview.

2. Choose what will generate the feed
Software encoder
A software encoder runs on a computer and is a practical choice when the production is simple or needs flexible scene composition. The computer, encoder, and network connection must remain operational for the feed to continue. Account for updates, restarts, heat, power, and the possibility that a person may need to respond to a failure.
Dedicated hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is a separate appliance for sending a production feed to YouTube. It may suit a more involved production or an operating plan built around dedicated equipment. Before buying, check its supported resolution, frame rate, codecs, network protocols, inputs, and YouTube compatibility. Hardware does not by itself remove the need for a reliable network, monitoring, or a recovery plan.

3. Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In the encoder’s destination or streaming settings, enter the server URL and stream key. Select RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the password and address that allow the encoder to send the feed and YouTube to accept it. Anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the encoder and check that the incoming preview appears in YouTube Studio before you make the broadcast public or go live.
Exact menu names inside third-party encoders vary by product and version. Use that encoder’s current instructions for where to enter the destination and key; do not share the key in screenshots, public notes, or support requests unless it has been securely redacted.
4. Set the video parameters and test upload capacity
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS. Choose resolution and bitrate to match both the quality you need and the upload capacity you have actually tested. A fast speed-test result alone is not proof that the connection can sustain a broadcast over time.

- Resolution and frame rate: Choose values supported by the source, encoder, and connection. Higher output demands more sustained upload capacity.
- Bitrate: Set it according to the selected output and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Test with representative motion and audio rather than a still frame alone.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where the encoder permits; do not exceed four seconds.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where supported.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for different viewers, but that does not compensate for an unstable upload feed. Run a test long enough to observe the actual picture, sound, connection behavior, and local recording—not just the initial preview.
5. Test operations and prepare for failure
Before relying on unattended operation, test the failure modes you can reasonably anticipate. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup.

- Confirm the backup feed takes over as expected and that viewers can still open the stream.
- Open the stream from the channel or watch page and from a mobile device.
- Check audio and video quality during the test, including after a handoff.
- Verify that local recording files continue to grow if you are recording locally.
- Monitor the live broadcast over time; a successful preview at startup does not prove that every later segment is healthy.
A backup encoder, network path, power supply, or operator may reduce particular risks, but no configuration makes a continuous broadcast immune to outages. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a particular third-party uptime architecture.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable; YouTube warns that viewers may only be able to rewind up to a limit. Its DVR guidance also says viewers can see a recording of the entire stream once available when DVR is disabled, but that does not remove the separate archive caveat for very long streams.

If a complete replay matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting the broadcast in manageable segments. Verify current Studio behavior for your stream rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 YouTube stream
YouTube Studio shows no incoming preview
- Confirm the encoder is running and is using the correct server URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream.
- Check that the channel has live-streaming access enabled and that first-time activation has completed.
- Verify network access and the encoder’s destination settings, then restart the connection and check the preview again.
The stream drops or becomes unstable
- Test whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate; reduce output demands if it cannot.
- Inspect the encoder and network for interruptions, and test the backup path using the failover procedure before relying on it.
- Check that the encoder follows YouTube’s recommended CBR and keyframe settings.
Viewers report poor or missing audio/video
- Monitor the broadcast from a viewer-facing watch page and a mobile device, not only the encoder preview.
- Test representative source material and audio before the production begins; inspect again after any failover.
The replay is incomplete or viewers cannot rewind far
- For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable. Do not assume a complete archive from a single continuous broadcast.
- Keep a separate local recording and consider shorter broadcast segments if a complete replay is important.
