To stop desktop notifications from appearing on your OBS study stream, turn on Do Not Disturb or a suitable Focus mode and review its exceptions. If viewers only need to see one study app, use window or application capture instead of capturing the whole display. Before going live, check a private preview or test recording with notifications configured as they will be during your session.
Why notifications appear in an OBS stream
OBS Display Capture includes the entire monitor. A notification banner drawn over that display can therefore appear in the stream. OBS describes Display Capture as a way to “capture your entire monitor.” OBS Project: Display Capture Sources
There are two ways to address this: prevent banners from appearing on the desktop, or limit the image OBS captures. The first affects what you see and hear on your computer; the second affects what the audience sees. Using both gives you separate safeguards.
Windows 10 and 11: silence notifications and check exceptions
Turn on Do Not Disturb
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb.
- Review priority notifications and any permitted apps, alarms, or reminders. An exception that remains allowed can still interrupt your session.
- Check the automatic Do Not Disturb rules, including rules tied to display duplication or using an app in full-screen mode. Do not assume that starting a stream turns these rules on or silences every notification.
Microsoft says Do Not Disturb is designed to silence notifications during critical times, but the configured exceptions and rules determine what can still get through. Windows labels may vary by release; Microsoft’s current guidance is at Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.
Use Focus if you want a timed session
Starting a Focus session turns on Do Not Disturb by default. Check the session’s timer and any Focus interface in your desktop composition, and review the same notification allowances rather than treating Focus as a guarantee that every alert is blocked. See Microsoft’s Focus guidance.
macOS: configure Focus and capture the intended content
Review Focus settings
- Open Control Centre and turn on Do Not Disturb under Focus.
- In Focus settings, review which people and apps may send notifications, and whether time-sensitive notifications or other permitted alerts can appear.
- Check Focus behavior during a preview so you know whether any allowed banner will be visible in the stream composition.
Apple explains that a Focus can allow notifications from selected people or apps and time-sensitive notifications. The current guide, for macOS 26, is Set up a Focus on Mac. Settings can differ across macOS releases.

Choose the macOS Screen Capture source in OBS
For macOS 13 and later, OBS documents the macOS Screen Capture source. Select Display Capture, Window Capture, or Application Capture according to what the scene needs to show. OBS identifies its older Window Capture source as deprecated on macOS 13 and newer; use the documented macOS Screen Capture source instead. See OBS Project: macOS Screen Capture.
If you use Display Capture, OBS provides a “Hide OBS from capture” option. It hides OBS itself; it is not a filter for desktop notifications. Source availability and labels can vary with the OBS version installed.

Limit capture to the study app when possible
If the audience only needs to see a reading, writing, or other study application, choose a window or application capture source supported by your operating system and OBS version rather than Display Capture. This can keep unrelated desktop content out of the scene, but it also means viewers will not see anything outside the selected app.
On Windows, OBS Window Capture can show only the selected window even when other windows overlap it. Confirm that the source is pointed at the correct app and that its content remains visible as intended. See OBS Project: Window Capture Sources.

On macOS 13 and later, choose Window Capture or Application Capture within macOS Screen Capture if either fits the scene. On Linux, capture and notification behavior depend on the desktop environment and distribution; consult the current notification settings for your environment and test the specific capture source you use. OBS documents Linux screen-capture source families, but that alone does not establish whether a particular desktop environment’s banners are excluded. See OBS Project: Sources Guide.
Pick the approach that fits your study session
- You need the whole desktop on screen: use Display Capture and configure Do Not Disturb or Focus carefully, including its exceptions and automatic rules.
- You only need one app on screen: use a supported window or application capture source to keep other desktop content outside the captured area.
- You still need urgent alerts: keep only the exceptions you need, then verify their behavior in a preview. A notification allowed through by the operating system may still be visible with full-display capture.
- You use Linux: identify your desktop environment first; there is no single procedure established here for all Linux systems.
Check the scene before going live
- Set Do Not Disturb or Focus and review the apps, people, alarms, reminders, and time-sensitive notifications allowed through.
- In OBS, inspect the active scene and confirm whether it uses Display Capture or a window/application capture source.
- Make a private preview or test recording while the notification-producing apps are configured as they will be during the study stream.
- Check the recording or preview for banners and confirm that the intended study content is visible. If a banner appears, revisit the operating-system exceptions or switch to a narrower capture source if appropriate.
This check matters because the result depends on both the operating system’s notification settings and the source in the active OBS scene.
