How to Add a Countdown Timer Between Lessons in an Always-On YouTube Study Stream

Add a countdown between lessons by placing a timer webpage or prepared break video in an OBS scene, then test the transition and YouTube preview before leaving the stream unattended.

Build the countdown into your OBS output: use a Browser Source showing a countdown webpage, or play a prepared countdown video during each break. YouTube receives the finished scene from OBS; scheduling a YouTube broadcast does not add a timer. Test the lesson-to-break transition before leaving the stream unattended.

Choose how the timer should work

For a timer you can change without rendering a new video, use an OBS Browser Source pointed at a countdown page. For a fixed break that should look identical every time, use a countdown video as an OBS Media Source. Both approaches put the timer in the video OBS sends to YouTube.

Approach Best for What to plan for
Browser Source countdown Changing break lengths or updating the timer page You need to provide the timer webpage; OBS Browser Source is not itself a countdown widget. Decide how the timer starts and how you return to the lesson.
Pre-rendered countdown clip A consistent, prepared break segment The duration is fixed in the video. You need a scene switch or a configured playback workflow to return to the lesson.

OBS also has a Text Source that can display text or read a text file, but the OBS documentation does not describe it as a dynamic countdown. Use a webpage or video for a timer that changes over time.

Set up a Browser Source countdown in OBS

  1. Create or choose the timer page. Use a countdown webpage that can be loaded from a URL or saved locally as an HTML file. Set its duration to the break length you want, and make the remaining time easy to read against your study visual.
  2. Add it to the lesson scene. In OBS, select the scene, use the Sources panel’s + button, and choose Browser. Give the source a recognizable name such as “Break countdown,” then enter the page URL or select the local file in the source properties.
  3. Size and layer it. Place the Browser Source above the study visual in the Sources list so it appears in front. Resize and position it in the preview. Keep it clear of other on-screen text and large enough to read at the stream’s viewing size.
  4. Choose how the break begins. The straightforward option is a separate break scene containing the timer and the visual you want during breaks. At the lesson boundary, switch from the lesson scene to the break scene; switch back when the break ends. Alternatively, show or hide the countdown source within a scene, but test that it starts at the intended duration each time.
  5. Run a local test. Start the timer, wait long enough to confirm it counts down, and check the transition back to the lesson. Test the timer after hiding and showing its source or switching scenes; do not assume it resets just because it is visible again.

If you use a local file, keep it available at the same location while OBS needs it. If you use an online page, check that it loads reliably and that the timer is still readable in the actual OBS preview.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a countdown video for a fixed break

  1. Prepare the clip. Render a countdown video at the break duration you need, with the remaining time legible over its background. Check the beginning and final seconds so the clip does not start late or end on an unintended blank frame.
  2. Add a break scene. In OBS, create a scene for the break and add the clip as a Media Source. Confirm the source’s playback settings and that the video fits the scene without obscuring the timer.
  3. Set up the return to the lesson. Switch to the break scene when the lesson ends, then return to the lesson scene when the clip finishes. If you use an OBS VLC Video source for an ordered set of lesson and break clips, VLC must be installed for that source to appear. Its playlist and Loop Playlist options support playback and looping, but do not by themselves establish a complete lesson scheduler; configure and test the scene/source workflow you intend to use.
  4. Test the whole sequence. Check the clip’s duration, timer readability, scene transition, and return to the lesson before relying on the setup unattended.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, so allow time for activation before a planned broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password: enter it in OBS, and never show it on air.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
  2. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings.
  3. Start the encoder from OBS and check the YouTube preview for the study visual, countdown, and lesson-to-break transition.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview before selecting Go live in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

A scheduled broadcast and the encoder’s outgoing stream are related but distinct parts of the setup. Scheduling helps prepare the broadcast; the timer still has to be part of the OBS scene or media that the encoder sends.

Plan what “always-on” means for this stream

YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That is not evidence that a single live session can run indefinitely. If your study channel is intended to stay live continuously, make an explicit continuity and restart plan, and verify YouTube’s current limits for your setup rather than assuming a scheduled stream or a looping scene can remain live forever.

Before leaving the stream unattended, test the complete lesson and break cycle, including the timer reset, scene return, stream preview, and what happens if OBS or the connection stops. YouTube receives only the output being sent by the encoder; it does not independently manage your OBS lesson schedule.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems

  • The timer is missing: In OBS, check that the Browser Source or Media Source is enabled and that it sits above the background in the Sources list. Confirm the correct scene is active.
  • The timer is behind the study visual: Move its source higher in the source stack, then check its position and size in the preview.
  • The timer does not count down: Verify that the loaded page is a countdown rather than a static text display. Test the page itself, then check its behavior when the source is hidden and shown or its scene is reopened.
  • The timer begins at the wrong time: Confirm the configured duration and the point at which the page or clip starts. Test the exact scene-switch or playback sequence you will use live.
  • The video break does not return to the lesson: A clip or playlist is not proof of a complete scheduler. Test the return transition and configure the scene/source workflow to perform it; use a manual scene switch if that is how you are operating.
  • YouTube shows no preview: Check that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube server URL with the correct stream key, and allow for first-time live enablement if applicable. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting on air.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the study stream is made from uploaded lessons and break videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel running from uploaded videos or a playlist. Upload the recording or build the playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

To include breaks, prepare the lesson and countdown segments in the order you want them played in the uploaded video or playlist; the timer itself must be part of that uploaded material. StreamNeo streams the uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
